Coming back to Malta from different directions, each having different ties, Anna (Barthelmess) and Cliff Merriman chose Malta and were “Coming home…;” they brought their daughter, Courtney, and son, Beau.

Channing Mavencamp of Saco High School was initiated as a new member of the National Honor Society.

The sister act in basketball was playing out between sisters, Mercedes and Sophia Stiles, as the Malta M-ettes team up for action on the court.

Veteran teacher, Vic Schumacher, after the Malta School Board did not vote for a negotiated incentive for his retirement, handed in his letter of resignation.

The Class C schools of the county were heading into District competition at Wolf Point. Both boys and girls teams from the Saco-Whitewater Panthers and Lady Panthers, Dodson Lady Coyotes, and the Dodson Coyotes are looking for action.

Local Knights of Columbus Free Throw Champions include Raleigh Hunter, Kooper Oxarart, David Skiff, Addy Anderson, Kylie Hunter, Kelbee Denham and Jared Engebretson.

Kristen Allen, a physician assistant student from New Jersey, is currently doing a double rotation at the Phillips County Hospital and Family Health Clinic.

The City of Malta was facing an issue regarding late payment on a water bill; the family found the check made out in their family member’s checkbook, which hadn’t been mailed because they had passed away.

Feb. 17, 1999

Zachary James Bebee was the first child born to Ryan and Mandi Bebee; he was born on Feb. 11 in Helena.

The County Commissioners hired a consultant to advise them on the newly organized employee union.

Chancey Watson and Shyla Bishop were selected as the Dodson School Students of the Month. Chancey’s parents are Greg and Corliss Nelson and John Watson; Shyla’s parents are Eddie and Sherrill Bishop.

Once a runner-up, Joe Niebur is named the Golf Course Builder of the Year. He is the son of Mark and Jean Niebur.

A Saco woman, Kristen Suddeth, is serving 60 days in the Phillips County Jail after pleading guilty to one count of negligent endangerment and one count of criminal possession of a toxic substance, both misdemeanors. The charges stem from an incident where she exposed a juvenile to risk or bodily harm by allowing her to huff gasoline. The child was burned over 75 percent of her body when she used a lighter to light a cigarette.

Kris LaBrie has become only the third two-time wrestling champion in Malta Mustang history. He is a junior.

Whitewater’s Penguins head into the final week of 3C boys’ basketball ensconced in second place.

Sandy Lett, a rockhound at heart, turned her love for stones into a business. She took several years of classes of study through the Gemological Institute of America to become a gemologist.

The Malta Mustangs cinched the first-place seed in the 2B conference in basketball.

Jesse Brown, wrestling at 189 pounds, came within one point of winning the State Wrestling Championship.

Feb. 14, 1974

Funeral services were held for Rena Grimsley, age 93, of the Box Elder community.

Robert Eklund was charged with murder, a felony, in connection with the death of Davis L. Sox, 29, of Saco. He is being held on a $25,000 bond.

Ric Floren has coached the Speech and Debate Team to win the state Class A championship.

Ten wrestlers have earned the right to wrestle in the State Championship happening this weekend.

The Clark Cummings family lost all their household and personal belongings in a fire on Sunday afternoon. The home is on the Terry Stiles ranch, the former Bebee place, six miles west of Malta.

First Security Bank employee, Jane Ereaux, was pictured displaying the new safety deposit boxes that arrived.

Second Lieutenant Gregory L. DePuydt, 23, son of Mr. and Mrs. Louie DePuydt, was presented the Army Commendation medal at Ft. Ord, Calif. The medal was awarded for meritorious service.

The Malta Mustangs remained in the thick of the Northern Division race for basketball honors by virtue of a pair of wins over Conrad and Cut Bank last week.

Malta’s city police, backed by the county’s law enforcement group and urged on by an enraged citizenry, have been hotly engaged since Monday night in a manhunt for the individual who brutally attacked a 16-year-old schoolgirl in an alley shortly after nightfall Monday.

A double wedding uniting two well-known Saco boys with two sisters from Savoy took place at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Harlem. Miss Berniece Klingler became the wife of Norman Mavencamp; her sister, Helen Klingler became the bride of Leroy Christensen.

The Knights of Columbus presented Miss Patsy Hanson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hanson, with a lovely doll during an intermission at the March of Dimes dance Saturday night. The presentation was made by H. E. Jacobson, dance chairman.

Up in Whitewater country, we find C. T. and J. J. Glascock throwing a stag party and dinner for a group of their cronies. Among the guests were N. J. Brandt, William Grove, Alvin Olson, Paul Ostrom, E. Pearson, Levi Ostrom, Lewis Verbeck, J. B. Johnson, Emil and Akert Pabst, Joe Washenberger, Harold Wang, Martin Dahlmann, Ralph Stevens, John Askvold and O. C. Busche.

Billy Robertson, town marshal, was offering fifty cents reward for all the stray dogs the youth of the city will turn in to him.

The Phillips County Red Cross chapter board with the election of Rev. T. F. Rucker as chairman and Josef Sklower as vice chairman.

Game Warden “Daddy” Minugh had the unusual experience of watching a bank blow up right in his face.” Entering a north-western Montana institution in search of information regarding game law violators, “Daddy” was halted as an official brushed by him to post a “Closed” sign on the doors. Closed permanently, that was!

Malta High School had trimmed Havre in a basketball game and the town was elated. The score was 19-14. The guarding of Rader and Secrest was lauded to the skies and Misfeldt drew a bouquet for basket shooting.

And finally, a Glasgow newspaper note said Judge Borton was lost. He had left to hold court at Poplar and meanwhile, Poplar had lost the county seat and Wolf Point citizens had moved it out bodily. Meanwhile, nothing had been heard of the judge and it was thought that he might be wandering around the country in search of his court!

A prominent local attorney of the time was hauled into justice court for shooting ducks out of season. He was discharged for lack of evidence.

The statement of condition published by The First State Bank of Malta showed resources of $160,264.80. Judging by current statements, the bank could lose that much in the vault and not know it these days!
