Over 240 candidate filings processed for 2024 Elections

Montana Secretary of State Christi Jacobsen says more than 240 candidate filings have been processed by the Secretary of State's Office as of 5 p.m. on Friday, February 2.

"Twenty new candidate filings were processed by our office this week, bringing the total to 242 now that the calendar has turned to February," said Secretary Jacobsen. "Many of this week's filings were for the state legislature, but I wish all of the candidates the best of luck during the upcoming election cycle."

Fifteen of the 20 filings processed this week were candidates seeking an office in the state legislature. The remainder of the filings processed by the SOS Office were for District Court Judge positions and the Public Service Commission.

After three weeks of the candidate filing period being open, 190 legislative candidate filings have been processed by the Secretary of State's Office – 152 state representatives and 38 state senators. Ten of the senate races have multiple candidates, while 41 house races have at least two candidates filed. Senate District 36 has drawn the most candidates, four, while several others have three filings processed.

To date, 116 Republican legislative candidate filings have been processed, compared to 71 Democratic and three Libertarian filings processed for state legislative seats. Overall, 125 total Republican candidate filings have been processed, while 74 Democratic filings have been processed.

Two United States Senate candidates and two United States Representative (District 2) candidates have filed, along with one candidate each for Attorney General, State Auditor, and Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Four Public Service Commissioner candidate filings have been processed, including one new filing this week. Four filings have also been processed regarding the Montana Supreme Court – one Chief Justice candidate, one Clerk of the Supreme Court candidate, and two candidates for the open Justice No. 3 position.

A total of 37 District Court Judge filings have been processed.
