“I had to pinch myself again this morning,” said local volunteer resident, Laura Pankratz. She had submitted a grant that was successful for $495,000 to build a walking bridge across Hwy 2 along the Milk River.

Former Malta M-ette Bobbi Knudsen continued to add to her legacy as she was selected for the Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 Team. This is her third year for this honor.

Greg Oxarart was appointed by Gov. Steve Bullock to serve as a member of the Montana Grass Conservation Commission. Sonny Obrecht of Turner was also appointed.

The Malta M-ettes won two games over the weekend and were improving in areas they had been struggling in. They hit 10 of 11 free throws in the second half.

Lloyd Baeth purchased Dick’s Auto & Farm from Dick Dale, who operated the business for the past 30 years.

VFW Post #4067 Commander Mickey Mecklenberg, with the assistance of Donald Klinko, presented certificates to Bella Mackey, Billy Orahood and Joanie Sjostrom, winners of the Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest.

Marley Manoukian placed first in the Voice of Democracy speech contest; placing second was Riley Mortenson and Amanda Mummey placed third. The competition was sponsored by the VFW.

Youngsters at the Malta Head Start benefited from a fund-drive by Bonnie Jones, which provided 153 books that were donated during “I Love to Read Week.” Donations from local businesses and individuals made the drive successful.

Funeral services were held for the two men from Whitewater, who were killed in a head-on collision. Ken Obie and Arvid Messerly were both killed instantly; a 14-year-old son of Messerly survived and was flown to Billings for his injuries.

Fresh off a victory in their own invitational tournament, the Malta Mustangs were heading off to the divisional wrestling meet in Chinook. They hope to finish in the top three placings.

Private Jeffery Johnson was an Honor Graduate upon his graduation from the US Army Aerial Rocket Artillery School in Ft. Bliss, Texas. He scored 98.14 points out of a possible 100 over all subjects and was first in the Physical Training Test, with a 296 score out of 300 possible points.

Kris Eklund, a senior at Saco High School, has been selected from 137,000 applicants throughout the US as one of 2,000 semi-finalists in the 1998-99 Coca-Cola Scholarship Programs.

Inconsistent play plagued the Malta M-ette volleyball squad as they dropped four of five matches at the Glasgow Invitational tournament on Saturday.

The Whitewater Penguins volleyball squad took the Harlem Wildcats to five games last week, losing one by just two points and another by three, before being edged out in the match.

Mikki Donn (Wilkes) Simanton and Darcy Miller extended an invitation to their wedding on Feb. 20th at the Community Complex in Chaplin, Sask.

Two county students received nominations to the US Merchant Marine Academy in King’s Point, NY. Selected were Sara Fear of Whitewater, and Kathryn Veseth of Malta, they were nominated by Sen. Conrad Burns.

Havre well driller Bob Jacobson finally responded to a letter from the City Attorney after he failed to complete a job he was contracted for, for over a year. “It’s all personally my fault, (I had) a lot of things going on and there is no other excuse for it.”

A daughter was born to Corey Chandler and Bridgette Fronk on Dec. 23 in Helena. Rylee Lynn Noelle Fronk is the maternal granddaughter of the late Norm Fronk and Rita Kirkaldie, and the paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Al Chandler, all of Malta.

Jan. 31, 1974

Wayne Dean, of the Farmers and Ranchers Lumber Co., was honored as the “Boss of the Year” by the Jaycees.

A series of break-ins, with the windows in the doors being broken, involved L&L Meats, Central Standard Service, Mick’s Texaco and the Plaza Body Shop.

Mr. and Mrs. Ray Coleman were the guests as their children hosted their 25th wedding anniversary.

Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Maloney, of Turner, announce the engagement of their daughter, Denise, to Bruce Boothe, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stan Boothe of Malta.

Thirteen patrols from Chester, Havre and Malta took part in the Klondike Derby in Malta. Bill Cox got third for his homemade shoes. Other Malta Scouts participating were Karl and Kary Mavencamp, Carl Crowder, Dale McNamara, Jerry Hanson, Gary Loney and John Rose.

Dawn Goodheart and Reene McKeon have returned after working two weeks in Helena as pages in the senate.

Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Dan Williams of Landusky on the arrival of a new daughter born last week in Malta. She has been named Dannette Lynn; her dad, Dan, and Mom, Judy (Ashton) both graduated from Dodson High School. She joins two brothers at home.

Bud Yates, assistant secretary-treasurer of the Milk River Production Credit Association and branch manager of the Malta office, announced the PCA office would be moving into their new office at south Second Avenue East directly behind the MDU Company. Milton Olsen of Whitewater is a director.

About $125 in cash was realized and linen donations included 18 sheets, 11 pair of pillowcases, an assortment of 60 bath towels, hand towels and wash clothes, 10 pairs of men’s pajamas and three pair of children’s pajamas, at the silver tea and linen shower hosted by the Malta Hospital Guild.

JoAnn Simonson of Whitewater has been selected as the Girls State delegate to attend the annual session in Helena, June 1-6. Kay Donovan was chosen as the alternate.

Feb. 3, 1949

Funeral services for 1st Lt. Walston E. Smith will be held Feb. 5, at the Malta Lutheran Church. He took part in the invasion of France and Germany, helping to set up new army bases, and he received three battle stars. He graduated from Saco High School in 1931.

With Munson hotter than the proverbial bank robber’s pistol, the Dodson Coyotes proved too much for the Mustangs of the local floor as the west county quint made it two straight games over Malta in the current season. The score was 49-32 with Dodson leading all the way.

The Malta Mustangs bowed to Class A Glasgow, 46-26, after holding them to a narrow lead in the first periods. High man for Malta was LaFond with six points. They dropped a second game to Nashua by a score of 58-24; Simanton led the Mustangs with seven points.

The Little White Church will have a Supply Pastor during February, church officials announce. Rev. James Trimble will occupy the pulpit, he and his wife will live in the parsonage while they are here.

Malta’s VFW basketball team met the Clark Twins, a traveling hood outfit, on the city hall auditorium floor Sunday night and it was a case of too many twins. The locals dropped the decision by a 51-41 score. The Malta attack was led by Dean Robertson, a lanky center recruited from the high school faculty, and by Bill Bell, who jointly looped in the bulk of the Malta points.

The Phillips County fair had a board meeting in Dodson and elected a board of directors among whom were Roy Lee, A. J. Barrett, Dan Nicholson, Ole Hanson, Edgar Lee, J. N. Mangis and S. E. Kodalen. Even then, Edgar Lee was president and about to be re-elected.

John Mangis was becoming famous as a salesman of seed corn.

Malta firemen met and did away with the existing system of fining members for non-attendance at meetings. There was a new plan to pay the smoke eaters $2 for each fire call they answered.

Editor McKay again: “Three baggage cars of silks and satins from the Orient were hustled through town the other night on a fast train...Duck and calico are more to our taste.”

McKay again: “There is a feeling of buoyancy around Malta these days due to the absence of Louis Herschkowitz (local merchant). They are paving the streets in Helena this week and using him for a roller.
