Turk Salsbery displayed his knowledge of the world by winning the Malta Elementary Geography Bee; runner up was Marcus Knudsen.

Jim Sintler had resigned as maintenance man for the city, and a coffee and cake reception was held in his honor.

Zora (age 7) and Linden (age 5) Holt performed a delightful Christmas play for the Tallow Creek and Content audience. They were assisted by their teacher, Conni French, and community members in singing carols, as well.

Winning matches at the Glasgow Invitational were Keenan Schipman, Carter Epperson, Nolan Simanton, Jordan Pierce, Chase Murray, Antonio Lopez and Kelin King. All the members took first at the Chinook Mixer which was held the day before.

What would Christmas be without a movie and hayride with treats with Santa? Pretty boring! Thanks to the Wagon Train, the fun day was a reality this year!

The Malta School Board was facing decisions about an aging boiler, concussions and future teacher vacancies at the regular board meeting. The boiler was installed in 1953.

The Saco-Whitewater Lady Panthers are on a roll after taking down the Class B Lady Scotties of Glasgow 61-37. Kourtney Simonson led the team with 26 points and eight rebounds.

On the other hand, the Scotties came to Saco last week and attacked the Panthers, winning 71-41. Caleb Harms had 19 points in the loss; Jeret Warren had nine points.

Cake and coffee will be served Saturday, Dec. 19th from 2-4 p.m. to celebrate the 75th birthday of Carl “Swede’ Fahlgren.

Royal candidates for the annual Snowball are L. D. Matthews, Anthony Perry, Nathan Fried, and Brandon Millican for king, and queen candidates are Melissa Cochell, Roxanne Petrie, Valene Kielb and Lindsay Lang.

“We have a 3,000-seat gym, why should we be asked to squeeze together in the bottom sections?” was the question asked of Supt. Bill Parker. The school district went through two close elections to get the new facility built with its tournament-size gym. Fans who helped pass the final measure and also opposed the building of a bigger gym, shouldn’t have to sit elbow to elbow in the bottom seats when both upper decks remain closed.

Terry McIntosh has opened a bus service line from Havre to Malta weekdays. The bus line also connects with Great Falls, and from there people can connect to Butte, Helena, Missoula and Billings.

Big Flat Electric of Malta responded to a fire at the Hays Mission which destroyed the Hays Mission School and Convent. The fire raged from 6:30 a.m. until about 11 a.m., when it had totally destroyed the building. The school had an enrollment of 80 students, it had been founded in 1887.

Twenty-one members of the Malta Boxing Club went to Harlem Saturday night and put on an excellent account of themselves in matches with boxers from Harlem, Fort Belknap, Chinook, and Regina, Sask. The team was accompanied by Coach Dan Snider, team physician Dr. R. M. Wiprud, with Bob Darrah and Obert Dalby working the corners.

Coming out with wins for Malta were Randy Cady, Kipp Kelly, Delmar Henry, Jeff Darrah, Doug Simanton, Al Snider, Dirk Henry, Dexter Henry and Jean Green. Losing to their opponents were Clyde Darrah, Chad Messerly, Clete Messerly, Colby Eklund, Pete Dalby, Curt Reynolds, Tim Eklund and George Moore.

Army Sergeant Daniel Henry, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Miles W. Henry has returned to his home station in Karlsruhe, Germany, after lending support to the 7th Engineer Brigade’s annual bridge training held on the Danube River near GroBmehring.

Malta Mustang wrestlers split matches over the weekend, defeating Conrad 49-15 and falling to Cut Bank 35-25. Chris Barthelmess and Nick Cebulski remain undefeated after three weeks of action.

Colleen DePuydt, of Saco, was declared the winner of the annual Voice of Democracy contest sponsored by the Malta Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Private Brian V. Christensen, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. O. W. Christensen, of Malta, completed, with highest honors, a power generation course at the U.S. Army Engineer School, Ft. Belvoir, Virginia.

All bachelors and widowers in the community are invited to the free annual Christmas dinner to be held Wednesday, Dec. 19, at 2 p.m. at Smith’s Café. Sponsors for the dinner are Elmer Mayhew, Niecy Siebrecht, Jack Smith, K. P. Murray, Martin Matovitch, Dan Nicholson and O. W. Christensen.

Steven W. Lilley of the Fort Peck Indian Reservation was found guilty of first-degree murder last week in federal district court in Glasgow. Lilley and James Allen Red Dog, both of Wolf Point, were charged in the Oct. 4 shooting death of William Veseth of Wolf Point. The trial of Red Dog is taking place in Billings this week.

The Malta speech and drama team were in Billings last weekend attending the Magic City Invitational meet. The competition attracted 1,000 participants from 40 schools. Coach Ric Floren states that Daryl Broadbrooks and Neill Gilbertson did reach the semi-finals in humorous solo acting.

Dec. 16, 1948

An announcement was received this week of the marriage of Miss Maxine Claypool, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Claypool of Dodson, and Sgt. Frank Bushy of Tokyo, Japan, on November 29.

The Malta National Guard unit has been changed from a cannon company to a heavy mortar company. The change was effective December 1. The unit will be known as Heavy Mortar Company, 163rd Infantry. Lt. Gordon Peters will continue in command of the company with 2nd Lt. Clifford J. Lundstrom, second in command.

Melvin A. Sundin, chief metalsmith, USN, husband of Mrs. Melvin A. Sundin of Malta is serving aboard the light cruiser USS Huntington, which has completed a four-month tour of duty in the Mediterranean and a two-month good-will cruise of ports in Africa and South America, covering 28,507 miles.

Edwin and Simeon Kindle were acquitted of a charge of murder by a district court jury. They had been charged with the murder of Gilbert Gilbertson, a neighbor.

Malta High School had defeated Chinook 30-10. The Malta basketball players were Partridge, Secrest, Edwards, Misfeldt and Rader with Charles Coon and Paul Cauffman as substitutes.

Mrs. Cecil Bigwood had succumbed to a long illness. Funeral services were held at St. Mary’s Episcopal church with Archdeacon Hooker officiating.

Robinson and Hall shipped lambs to market that had been on corn for two months. They brought the excellent price of 12 cents per pound.

Charles Magner, local station agent, was on the lookout for several pigs that disappeared from a car with was being loaded. The Great Northern was offering a reward for their recovery.

Judge A. Davidson was building a new barn on his ranch (now the Steve Holman place) three miles west of town.

A new daughter had arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Edwards.

A 30-cent bottle of beer led to a row in a local saloon during which Walter Cross was knifed by James McDonough. Both were arrested. McDonough was being held under $500 bond and Cross was fined $50.

Chouteau County had made an appropriation for the construction of a bridge across Milk River at Dodson.
