The Malta Middle School Wrestling team competed at Wolf Point on Thursday, Dec 7 and at Sidney on Saturday, Dec 9. Teams competing at Wolf Point were Circle, Glasgow, Malta, Poplar, Sidney and Wolf Point. The same teams competed at Sidney with Baker, Glendive, Miles City, Watford City, ND and Williston, ND added to the mix.
Four wrestlers competed at Wolf Point and not Sidney. Trevor Knowles was 1-1 with the same opponent from Glasgow. Colby Wright was 2-0 and received the Quick Pin Award with a :07 pin. Amus Blunt and Jettlynn Malmend were 0-2 for the night.
Cord Newman and Kasen Jones were 0-5 for the week and received 4th place at Sidney. Beckett Squires was 2-0 at Wolf Point and 0-3 at Sidney. Cameron Spencer was 1-1 at Wolf Point and 0-3 at Sidney. Both Beckett and Cameron received 4th place, wrestled well and had tough competition. Cameron’s bracket was the toughest bracket there.
Third place finishers at Sidney were Hayden Roberts, Beau Merriman, Kaiden Tharp, Trent Blunt, Kallie LaBrie and Lyla Warren. Hayden Roberts was 2-1 at Wolf Point and 0-2 at Sidney. Beau Merriman was 0-2 at Wolf Point and 1-2 at Sidney. Kaiden Tharp was 0-4 for the week and Trent Blunt was 1-3. Kallie LaBrie was 1-4 for the week and Lyla Warren was 2-2. Lyla wrestled boys all week. She won both at Wolf Point and lost both at Sidney.
Tyrel Turnsplenty, Corby Mears, Braun Sims, Keavin Simser and Hudson Simons received second place at Sidney. Tyrel was 0-2 at Wolf Point but went 2-1 at Sidney. Corby Mears was 1-2 at Wolf Point and Sidney, going 2-4 for the week. Braun Sims went 4-1 for the week: 2-0 WP and 2-1 Sidney. Keavin Sims was 0-4 on the week. Keavin lost to the same kid twice at Sidney. Hudson did not compete at Wolf Point and lost to the same kid twice at Sidney to go 0-2.
Malta had four champions at Sidney. Gunner Stenberg pinned the same opponent from Poplar twice to get first. Gunner was 3-1 for the week. Beau Nelson did well again, going 3-1 for the week. Beau was 2-0 at Sidney with two pins. Karsten Davis was 3-1 on the week. Karsten had a pin and an overtime win to get first place. The overtime win was over a tough Glasgow opponent. This match gets the Most Exciting Match Award. Steeler Blunt was 5-0 for the week. Steeler has been dominate for the last two weeks. He started the year with a 0-6 record and now he is 10-6. Most of Steeler’s 10 wins have been pins as well. Because of Karsten’s impressive win in Sidney and Steeler’s dominance this week and last, Karsten and Steeler will share the Wrestler of the Week Award. The Malta Middle School wrestlers will have their final tournament on Saturday, Dec 16 at Glasgow. The tournament starts at 11:00 am.
