Sapphire Avenue in Hillcrest took on a new look as the Eric Wilke family adorned their yard with decorations and lights that danced to music broadcast over an FM radio signal.
The Geography Bee netted five contestants as finalists for each of the fourth and fifth grades. The fourth graders were Kyle Johannesen, Gavin Benge, Kevin Missildine, Oren Mackey and Austin Bunk. The fifth graders selected were Turk Salsbery, Marcus Knudsen, Pierce Mortenson, Peyton Jones and Korin Longknife.
Nellie Ereaux won the award for the most unique centerpiece at the Festival of Trees with her arrangement entitled “Jingle Bells.”
The VFW was hosting a “Save the Villa” jam session, including music, a chili feed and 50/50 raffle drawing.
After meeting earlier in the evening, Karey Fox and friends gave CJ Bishop a ride as he was walking on the streets in Billings, following an accident he was in while riding with a friend. Three years later they were engaged and married the following summer. Both are used to small towns, CJ and Karey and children decided they were “Coming home” to Malta and will make it their “home.”
The Saco-Whitewater Lady Panthers started their opening basketball season with wins over the Culbertson Cowgirls and the Highwood Lady Mountaineers.
The Saco-Whitewater Panthers boys’ basketball team was off to a rough start after they dropped games to Jordan and Nashua over the weekend.

Leila Barnard, a student at Malta High School, as part of the Close-Up program, was raffling off a gingerbread house for a fund raiser.
Garry Adams and associate Greg Kirkwood announced this week that a crematorium would be installed at the Adams Funeral Home in Malta.
Lindsey Kirkaldie and Nichole Hawley were honored by teammates of the Frazer basketball team with star quilts.
Marion Waters, former fair manager of the Phillips County Fair, was one of five volunteer managers who was presented the Hardee’s American Heritage Award at Las Vegas. He received $1,000 and the fair board received $500. Waters had served 30 years and retired in 1989.
With high hopes heading into state basketball competition following their win at district, the M-ettes’ dreams were cut short in their first game losing to Whitehall 58-49.
Saco Panthers have enough returning from last year that other teams consider them to be contenders in this year’s basketball season. Coach Ty Granning viewed his team as talented, but smaller.
Saco School was one of 18 schools who will expect to receive $10,000 from the federal government for tele-communications and Internet connections.

William Ballard, of Glendive, began his duties as county agent with the Cooperative Extension Service in Phillips County on Dec. 3rd.
The Malta Mustangs are off to a happy start to their 1973 basketball season as they upset the favored Lewistown Eagles in a non-conference encounter on Friday, 59-41.
Robert John Eklund, 22, of Saco, was arraigned in Justice Williams Waters’ court on the charge of murder of David Sox. Sheriff Pete Messerly had sent special sheriff’s deputy, Orlie Linn to look for him. Linn found Eklund driving Sox’s pickup around and when asked of his whereabouts, Eklund led Linn to the body.
Construction began last week on the Hi-Line Packing building which is being built by Leonard Leader and Marvin Lundman.
Tim Long, a senior at Malta High School, was named second place winner in the Elks Youth Leadership contest.
Coach Glenn Flatt reports that the Mustangs were led by some fine wrestling from Steve Baeth, Nick Cebulski, and Chris Barthelmess as each recorded a championship.

Mrs. Tom Taylor was one of nine members of the graduating class of 1948 of the Sacred Heart school of nursing at Havre to successfully pass the recent state board of examinations. Mrs. Taylor is the former Alyce Wagner.
Three Phillips County men left this week for Butte for pre-induction examinations. They are Martin O. Lake and George A. Lawrence, both of Loring, and John N. Russiff, a recent transferee from Virginia City.
The VFW will be sponsoring the Third Annual Pearl Harbor Dance. The dance will be held at the Malta City Hall, with good music.
A call for bids for the construction of a hospital in Malta has been issued by the Phillips County Hospital association. The hospital association has on hand approximately $120,000. Based upon present plans for a structure costing roughly $260,000, the project is eligible for a government grant of about one-third the total cost.
Vern Peterson of Malta was fined $10 and $2.50 costs for defective clearance lights by Justice Earl Hanson on Nov. 22.
Nashua defeated the Malta Mustangs in a hard-fought game on the local floor last Friday evening by a 54-46 score.
Patsy Hanson, five-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hanson of Malta, returned to her home last week following three months of treatments at Shodair Childrens’ Hospital in Helena. The little girl was stricken with infantile paralysis in August.

The Saco Panthers opened their 1948-49 basketball season by defeating Frazer last Friday on the Frazer floor. The Saco quintet outplayed the Frazer team from the beginning whistle to the final whistle; the final score was 43-30. Scheele with 19 points and Robinson with 10 points were high for Saco.

District court was in session. The most important case was a murder case, the State vs. Edwin and Simeon Kindle of Bowdoin. The Kindles were charged with the murder of Gilbert Gilbertson, a neighbor. Court officers were C. D. Bordon, judge; C. F. Kenney reporter; B. P. Sandlie, county attorney; John Ebaugh and N. O. Sherdahl, bailiffs; Charles Wolfe sheriff, and Milton A. Porter deputy clerk of court.
The Hinsdale Mercantile store was destroyed by fire. The proprietor, John Survant of Malta, was sleeping in the store at the time and it was with some difficulty that the firemen aroused him.
Miss Ruth Sessler, 23, former postmistress at Caldwell, had been sentenced by Federal Judge Bouquin to serve nine months in Cascade county jail for embezzlement of government funds. Her brother-in-law, R. J. Porter, Caldwell farmer, was sentenced to 16 months in Leavenworth for aiding and abetting her. They were jointly fined $3,025.65, the amount of the shortage.

The infant child of Mr. and Mrs. Dudley Jones died at their Dodson home.
County Surveyor Mann was up from Glasgow with authority from the county seat to build a new jail in Malta. A 16x28-foot building was to be constructed on the site of the old jail and it was to be “comfortable enough for those unfortunate to be caught in the dragnet of the law.”
William Hayes had received a 10-year prison sentence for his part in the holdup and robbery of one Wellwood at Zortman some time previously.
The First State Bank had run a pipe from the Great Northern hotel and was now getting heat from that popular hostelry.
