Malta Middle School hosts Home Meet; Six Earn Titles

The Malta Middle School competed at Poplar on Thursday, Nov 30 and at home on Saturday, Dec 2. The teams competing at Poplar were Sidney, Circle, Wolf Point, Malta, Glasgow and Poplar. The same teams minus Sidney, competed at Malta. Most wrestlers got two matches at Poplar and three matches at Malta.

Beckett Squires and Beau Merriman found tough competition in Poplar going 0-2 and Gunner Stenberg went 2-0 in his first outing, coming from behind in his second match to pin his opponent. All three of these wrestlers were sick for Saturday's competition.

Cord Newman, Amus Blunt, Kaiden Tharp, Trent Blunt and Jettlynn Malmend placed fourth at the Malta tournament. Cord, Amus and Kaiden went 0-5 on the week. Jettlynn was 1-4 for the week, coming from behind to pin his opponent in Poplar. Trent was 2-3 on the week, going 2-0 at Poplar.

Colby Wright, Cameron Spencer, Beau Nelson and Hudson Simons placed third at the Malta tournament. Results for the week were Colby 2-3, Cameron 2-3, Beau 3-2 and Hudson 2-3. This group wrestled well despite having tough competition. Cameron and Beau have really been battling well no matter the score. Most Exciting Match goes to Hudson Simons for his effort versus an experienced Glasgow wrestler. It was a tight match until the end and Hudson had his teammates and the gym excited. Hudson lost, but his effort and attitude was awesome. This was Hudson's third match ever.

Placing second at the Malta tourney were Keavin Simser, Karsten Davis, Kasen Jones, Hayden Roberts, Corby Mears and Trevor Knowles. Trevor didn't have a match at Poplar, but went 1-2 at Malta. Karsten was 2-3 and Kasen and Hayden Roberts went 3-2 this week. Karsten and Hayden put in a solid week of wrestling and Kasen nearly won the Malta tournament, losing a close decision. Corby Mears suffered a loss in the first round in Malta but went 4-1 on the week. Keavin Simser was 4-1 on the week as well and has been improving each week.

Malta had six champions at their own tournament. Tyrel Turnsplenty was 0-2 at his debut in Poplar but rebounded with a 3-0 record at Malta. Kallie LaBrie was 3-1 for the week. She beat a Glasgow opponent at Malta, who had beat her at Poplar. Zander Fuller was 2-0 for the week and got the Quick Pin Award with a :10 pin. Steeler Blunt had a great week with a 5-0 record. Steeler had 3 pins on Saturday. Braun Sims also had an impressive 5-0 record for the week. Braun pinned two opponents and won by major decision on Saturday. The Wrestler of the Week is Lyla Warren. Lyla was 4-0 on the week. Lyla receives the award because she beat a Glasgow opponent 3 times this week. This is an opponent that Lyla had never beat in her life to this point. Lyla won by scores of 3-0, 5-0 and 2-0. Her opponent never scored a point on her this week.

We appreciate all of the people that made the Malta tournament a success. Thanks to the referees, trackwrestling operators, table workers and people making food for the hospitality room. Also, thanks to all who came to set up on Friday night and stayed on Saturday to put things away. All jobs are equally important and much appreciated. The Malta Middle School will be in Wolf Point on Thursday and in Sidney on Saturday.
