The Dodson Coyotes boys basketball team is 2-0 after picking up a pair of wins in Glasgow last weekend at the Class C Showcase.
The Coyotes defeated the Terry Terriers 47-45 on Friday, December 1, and the Mon-Dak (Westby-Grenora) Thunder 49-23 on Saturday, December 2.
"We just work hard," Senior Captain Sebastian Best said. "We lift (weights) in the afternoon; seventh period at the end of school. We want to get our bounce up. We want to be the best athletes on the court at all times."
In their win over Terry, Dodson was led by Frank "Sonny" Cole who knocked down seven treys, and totaled a game-leading 21 points.
"It felt good," Cole said of his jumphot. "I know that I am a good shooter."
"He is just like his dad," Best said, mentioning Skip Cole, a Dodson basketball legend.
Junior Stiffarm had 11 points. Donovan Posey had six points. Lance KillEagle had five points. Sebastian Best and Jakobe Heminger both had two points.
Best was asked the key to the team's victory.
"We just moved the ball and got it to our shooters," Best said. "Sonny Cole stepped up big in his first varsity start. We really appreciate him coming in and playing amazing. It's a team sport and we played as one. I think that is what got us the win."
The Coyotes fell behind 10-14 after the first quarter, but outscored the Terriers 14-6 in the second quarter to grab a 24-20 lead at halftime. Dodson's offense sputtered to a four point output in the third quarter, while Terry scored 15. The score was 28-35 in favor of Terry. Dodson outpaced the Terriers 19-10 in the fourth quarter, thanks in part to three late treys by Cole, a pair of buckets from L. KillEagle and Heminger and a couple of clutch free throws from Stiffarm.
"Lance is really aggressive," Cole said. "He is a feisty little guy. He is good. He is quick and he is all about defense."
Best said that their defensive effort would be how they could pick up another win against Mon-Dak the following day.
"We are going to go out there and we are going to scrap," Best said. "We are going to be the best defensive team out there. You can always count on us to hustle, that's for (dang) sure."
Dodson's win over Mon-Dak did in fact feature a ferocious defensive effort in which Dodson did not allow a single point in the first and third quarters.
Offensively, Dodson was led by Stiffarm who had 17 points. Posey had 12 points, Cole had nine points (three treys), KillEagle had four points, Jaxon Jones had three points, Brayden Jones had two points, and Best had two points.
Cole was asked how it felt to be back on the court.
"It feels good to be back," Cole said.
Dodson does not have a game scheduled for this weekend, but will host the Scobey Spartans on Friday, December 15, starting at 4 p.m. They will then host the North Country Mavericks on Saturday, December 16 starting at 5:30 p.m.
