The Malta Chamber of Commerce sent a letter to the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, opposing the introduction of buffalo on the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge. State Representative Mike Lang said the FWP hears from 60,000 people outside of Montana in favor of the proposal and 20,000 within Montana who oppose it.
Tyler Hanson, graduate of Shepherd, MT. was interviewed as the new Spanish teacher at Malta High School.
Phillips County Commissioner Dunbar called the reintroduction of ferrets “a waste of money.” FWP had falsely claimed it consulted with the Commissioners.
After wrestling with dates for the County Fair, while competing with the Great Northern Fair in Havre, the event was again returned to the first weekend in August.
Enthusiastic young musicians provided music at the Hi-Line Retirement Center. They include Brylee French, Kirsta Meisdalen, Addison Ulrich, Kaycee Bond, Arayaa Longknife, Sierra White and Aiden Kaasa.
Minerva Allen of Hays/Lodgepole was nominated as one of three finalists for the 2013 High Plains Book Award in poetry. There are 184 entries from an area, including the high plains of Montana, and Alberta, Canada.
The “Poundin Pills” team of Greg and Amanda Ziegler and CJ and Karey Bishop won the 2nd Annual Chamber Putt & Crawl for the best score. The event netted more than $1,000 for the Chamber.

Four months after losing her husband to Hantavirus, Rhonda Waters found thieves had stolen many of her memories and keepsakes, in a burglary. They stole things that would only mean something to her and her young sons, ages two and eight. The theft took place at their farm, 23 miles south of town.
Jonathan Haag of Whitewater has been selected to sing in the 1999 Northwest Choir. Selected from 4,000 applicants, he is the first student from Whitewater to ever be selected.
They call it the Hitchin’ Post, and that’s just what it was as two cowboys tethered their horses outside to a rail, while they stopped to enjoy a cup of coffee.
Lacy Lodmell, Navy Seaman Recruit, son of Larry and Terry Lodmell, recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill. He is a 1997 graduate of Malta High School.
Elizabeth Anderson, a sophomore at Malta High School, will attend the Hugh O’Brien Youth Conference in Missoula. She is the daughter of George and Berta Anderson.
The Town of Dodson is under a boil order from the Montana DEQ after a check of water failed to pass inspection. Fecal coliform bacteria was present, possible “back flow” through stockwater tanks fed by the city’s culinary water system.

Howard Smith, local area trustee for the Yellowstone Boys Ranch, reminded area farmers and ranchers that the pickup date for livestock donations to the Ranch will be Nov. 29th. You can deliver them to the Smith Ranch or call for pickup.
Malta High School senior girls were guests at a Business and Professional Women’s Club for career night. Presenters were Mary Kron (library), Berniece Vetter (sales merchandising), Kay Nordlund (nursing), Wanda Reynolds (medical technology), Marilyn Carlson (banking), Denise Maloney (dental assistants), Danette Lefdahl (cosmetology).
Former members of Company D, 116 Qm. Regiment were on hand as James Russell Larcombe presented the guidon to the local post. Present were Bill Kaufman, Orville Starkey, Clarence Mikkelson, Leonard Anderson, Barney Majusiak, George Hoynes, Wayne Dean, Conrad Bergsagel, George Ames and Willard Brandon.
The local National Guard Company was mobilized in Sept. 1940 and its 8 members were sent to Fort Lewis, Wash., for training. In February 1942 the unit was renamed 1098 Engineer Dump Truck Co. and served until October, 1945.
Proclaimed by Pres. Richard M. Nixon as Government Day, students at Malta High School had a special assembly. Speakers were Alert Fladland, Malta Chief of Police, and County Attorney Willis McKeon.
John Kovach retired after 21 years of service with the Malta Irrigation District; he and his wife were honored at a dinner at Stine’s and he was presented with a watch.
Melvin Leslie Wiese, 26, of Whitewater, was one of three injured in a head-on collision two miles east of Whitewater. He suffered multiple fractures of both legs, a broken hip and a lower break on his right leg. Hospitalized from the same accident were Alvin Alexander Olsen and his sister, Nancy.
New members are being sought for the Phillips County Sheriff’s Posse, it was reported by Leonard Mingneau, captain.
The speech sweepstakes trophy was claimed by Malta High School at the Sidney Invitational meet last Saturday. There were 264 registered contestants from 18 schools in attendance. First place winners were Jan Jacobson in expository; Terri Kelly in oral interpretation; Laurie Larcombe in girls extemporaneous speaking, and Chuck Hannon in pantomime.

Nov. 25, 1948
Funeral services were held for Olaf Dyrdahl, 77, a resident of Loring and Malta communities. Survivors include his widow, Ella, and children Arvid, Orville, Donald, Glenn, Mrs. Anker Hanson, Mrs. Dave Omdahl, and Mrs. Alfred Charlton, and 14 grandchildren.
The Malta Mercantile company, local John Deere dealer, will host “John Deere Day” on Wed. Dec. 1st, with a lunch at the store and motion picture at the City Hall and Palace theatre.
The Malta Mustangs open up their basketball season Sat. Nov. 27th, in a game against the Red Raiders of Hinsdale in Hinsdale. Coach Lee Davison announces his starting varsity lineup as Smith, Hould, Simanton, Veseth, and Ring.
John V. Crowder of Malta and Betty Hart of Chinook were married at the Little White church parsonage on Saturday evening. Witnesses were Betty and Jean Crowder of Malta.

The Malta firemen had organized a basketball team.
Mail from Malta to Legg could now be delivered to that Missouri River community without having to detour by way of Lewistown.
The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Morrow had died after a short illness.
Martin Wolf lost a brand new car when it caught fire while he was chasing a coyote over the north bench prairies.

A sinister plot to kill Judge Tattan and a “certain livestock inspector” had been brought to light, according to the Havre Plaindealer.
Deposits at the First State Bank in Malta had reached $87,861.21, according to the report of the bank’s condition made by Cashier Elijah Smith. Total resources were listed at $193,950.20 as of Nov. 9, 1905.
John Survant had several pigs for sale, good big ones, for $5 each.
Notice of final proof on homesteads and desert claims were posted by the following Phillips county residents: George Clanton, Martha Lee, Albert Tetrault, Archild Hould, Lucy Hould, Mary Survant, John Survant and Maggie Ereaux.
The Mayor of Glasgow had clamped down on all forms of gambling in that city and was alleged to have recommended the same for Malta.
