Eight Malta Middle School Wrestlers Place First in Williston

Twenty-two Malta Middle School wrestlers competed in the Lewistown Middle School meet on Tuesday, November 14.

The competition was tough with teams from Fergus, Huntley, Malta, Lockwood, St. Francis, Colstrip an Roundup competing. Most of the brackets had four wrestlers in them.

Wrestlers that received fourth place and were 0-3 on the tournament were Colby Wright, Cameron Spencer, Beau Nelson, Steeler Blunt, Hudson Simons, Cord Newman and Kaiden Tharp. Colby, Steeler, Hudson and Cord were pinned in all their matches. Cameron lost two matches by decision and one match by pin. Beau lost two matches by pin and one by technical fall. Kaiden lost matches by major decision, technical fall and pin.

Beckett Squires, Hayden Roberts, Zander Fuller, Amus Blunt, Keavin Simser, Kasen Jones and Trent Blunt placed third at the Lewistown meet. Keavin and Amus won and lost their matches by pin with a record of 1-2. Zander was 0-2, losing by pin in both matches. Kasen lost two matches by pin and won one match by forfeit. Trent lost two matches by pin and won one match by decision. Hayden won one match by pin and lost two matches by pin and decision. Beckett had hard-fought matches going 1-2, winning and losing by decision.

Second place wrestlers were Braun Sims, Lane Spencer, Trevor Knowles, Beau Merriman and Kallie LaBrie. Braun won by pin and forfeit and lost a match by one point. Lane lost a match by major decision to a tough Huntley opponent then rebounded with a win by decision. Trevor Knowles and Beau Merriman both won and lost by pin. Trevor was 1-1 and Beau was 2-1. Kallie won two matches by pin and lost one match by decision.

Malta had three champions at the Lewistown meet. Lyla Warren went 2-0, winning a match by pin and the other by decision. Lyla continues to improve each week. Corby Mears won his second tournament in a row going 3-0 for the meet. Corby won one match by pin and won two matches in overtime. Corby was behind in points for both of those overtime matches and tied the score late in regulation before getting the winning takedown in overtime. Corby wins the Most Exciting Match (or matches) of the Week. Getting his first win of the season, going 3-0 and pinning his three opponents in the first round for a total wrestling time of two minutes and 10 seconds was Blake Tharp. Blake has improved a lot and receives our Wrestler of the Week Award. Blake also wins the Quick Pin Award with a pin in 23 seconds.

The next action for the Malta Middle School wrestlers is the Poplar meet on Thursday, November 30 at 5 p.m. If you want to see these Malta wrestlers in action, the Malta tournament is Saturday, December 2 at 10 a.m.
