Malta’s famed Leonardo, the mummy dinosaur, listed in the Guinness World Book of Records as being among the best-preserved dinosaur remains in the world, went on display at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis.

The black-footed ferret is a topic of the Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission meeting in Helena. They are being considered for release to augment the population on the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge south of Malta.

A few kids going through simulated fire and smoke at the Fire Department drill were excited! Assistant Fire Chief Matt Veit said, “…however, there were some that were petrified and hysterical.” The drill involved smoke provided by a smoke machine and crawling through the City Pool in a prevention training.

The M-ette volleyball had wins over Harlem, Poplar and Wolf Point in Districts to advance to Divisional play in Malta this weekend. They were not looking forward to playing against 6’4” Jill Barta, who “strikes fear in the hearts of anyone on the other side of the net.”

The Saco-Hinsdale Wildfire volleyball team saw their season come to an end, losing to Bainville and Scobey, eliminating them from Divisional tournament action in Sidney.

Oct. 28, 1998

Dodson resident, Manford Jones, was charged with assault on a peace officer. Deputy Sheriff Scott Moran was responding to a call in Dodson and was shot at by Jones. Jones faces up to 10 years in Prison and a fine of up to $50,000 if convicted. Judge Gayle Stahl set bond at $50,000.

John and Susan Meisdalen announced the birth of Caleb and Julia, born Oct. 29th in Havre.

Three Phillips County men have been charged with unlawful transactions with children, a misdemeanor, for making alcohol available to minors. Letters were sent to Jason Bednarczyk, Tracy Henry and Steven Mayer telling them to make their initial appearance in Justice of the Peace Court. The charges stem from an investigation that resulted in Malta resident Kale Wilke being cited for negligent vehicular homicide in the July 4 death of Jack Brogan in a two-vehicle accident.

The cast of The Wizard of Oz showed up at the First State Bank to celebrate Halloween; they slightly resembled Corliss Watson, June Mavencamp, Destiny Doney, Ann Shettel, Christy Taylor and Jodi Carnahan.

Bill and Marcella McEwen came closer to having an empty nest, when their son, Jason, and daughter, Janelle, held their weddings in less than a month of each other. Jason wed Leigh Boge in Stanley, ND, and Janelle became the bride of Philip Ator, in Malta, MT.

Coach Scott King contributed the superior physical conditioning of the Malta Mustangs for wearing down the Cut Bank Wolves to move them on into quarterfinal play at Eureka this weekend. They won over the Wolves with a 26-10 victory.

With a 57-44 win over Wolf Point, the volleyball team was tied with Glasgow for the first-place spot in the 2B league. The M-ettes will be playing in the new high school gym.

Former M-ette Greta Koss was surrounded by the current M-ettes and former coaches and the Malta Athletic Club as Malta High School officially retired her jersey. She had also played for the University of Montana and the Utah Starzz. She was the first ever MHS athlete to have her jersey retired.

Robert Walsh was taken into custody recently and charged with three felony counts of sexual intercourse without consent. Justice of the Peace Gayle Stahl set bail at $100,000.

Kale Wilke has been charged with negligent homicide in the death of Jack Brogan and negligent vehicular assault in the injuries of Katie McKeon. He was also charged with misdemeanor vehicular assault due to injuries to Clete Messerly, who was in a second vehicle in the accident.

Agnes and Howard Barnard celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary with family and friends.

The (former) Dodson bridge that spanned across the river west of Dodson was heading for its new home, between Belt and Highwood.

Mrs. Ruth Flansaas escaped injuries when her car struck a heifer on Hwy 242 north of Malta. Her son and another boy were not injured either.

The Conrad Cowboys came to Mustang field for the last game of the season for both teams and claimed a 22-12 victory. It was parent appreciation night. Team members and cheerleaders and their fathers were introduced before the game. Coach Glenn Flatt reported Chuck Scheele and Pete Lumsden had outstanding defensive games.

Lew Cook, a former Malta police officer, failed to appear at his scheduled trial on Wednesday. A plea of guilty was therefore entered and Cook forfeited his cash bond of $100. County Attorney Willis McKeon informed Mayor E. L. Seel that night and Cook was discharged from the force immediately.

Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Hould were honored at a reception for their 25th anniversary.

The Malta girls’ basketball team, recently christened the Mustangettes, ran their record to 4-1 in conference play over the weekend.

Sandra Nicholson began employment in eastern Montana to serve 18 counties as a health planner. She will be living in Sidney.

Thur. Nov. 4, 1948

Military honors will be accorded the body of Cpl. Arthur Newton, who was killed in action in southern France on Oct. 28, 1944, by members of the American Legion and VFW on Friday at 2 o’clock. He is survived by brothers Vic, Leslie, Howard, Vern, Louis and Earl.

Miss Elsa Black was elected president of the Glasgow Circuit of the Lutheran Daughters of the Reformation which met in a convention in Malta on Sunday. Edna Nybo (secretary, of Saco) and Madelyn Flesche (retiring secretary of Malta) were in attendance. Selma Solberg of Dodson took part in the discussion.

Twelve boys were inducted into the Malta FFA Chapter. They were Dick Blevins, Jim Borst, Linnie Cornell, Jack Faydo, Bill French, Virgil Hoynes, Will Johannesen, Jack Kelly, Allen Plouffe, LeRoy Tuttle, James Tyler and Wayne Widowfield. Malta will host the FFA Convention on Saturday, lunch will be 25 cents.

The Loring Farm Union Reorganized and was attended by about 45 farmers and ranchers. Attending were Jack Korsbeck and a roll call of members included Vern Mangis, Duane Compton, Herbert Compton, Fred Grabofsky, Henry Mason, Peder Johannesen, John Wiese, Arnold Eggum, Andrew Flansaas, Ed Palm, Andrew and Glenn and Henry Compton.

Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Davidson were the parents of a son.

Tom Johnson, Malcom Taylor, the Grimsley Brothers, Ed Pierson and Lark Wilson had shipped out a trainload of cattle.

The Malta Mercantile company was staging a big annual clearance sale. Extra large bath towels were selling for 39 cents each, three cans of salmon for 50 cents and Jonathan apples for $1.50 per box.

Malta young folks had made an outstanding record of destructiveness over the Hallow’en weekend.

New Ford prices were announced as follows – “Runabout,” $265; touring car, $295; coupe, $525; and sedan, $685. A Fordson tractor sold for $450.

Gustaf Emanuelson, son of I. Emanuelson of North Bowdoin was seriously injured when he tried to stop a runaway team. His mother had been driving the horses when they became frightened and bolted.

Harvey Heming had been appointed deputy sheriff to replace Henry Jacobson who planned to work at the M. J. Raider garage.

Dr. Clay had been called to the Long X on the Missouri River where he found Ed (Shorty) Brandon, ranch foreman, suffering from a severe beating. The man was unconscious when found by men from the UL ranch and the identity of the mysterious attacker had not been learned.

“Wild Bill” Martin, a local character, had been holed up in Justice A. Davidson’s court to answer to a charge of shooting one of R. M. Trafton’s cows in the nose.

A miner, employed by the Ruby Gulch company, had struck a stick of dynamite with a pick and had been injured.
