No one answered the phone at Bowdoin National Wildlife Refuge on Tuesday morning. The office was shut down as a nationwide government office closure.

It's celebration time for the Kienenberger’s. Come wish Charles a happy 80th birthday, and Charles and Sharon a happy 50th wedding anniversary. A reception will be held on Oct. 26th at the Lutheran Church.

The Dodson Speedway will host a two-day AMX race, with proceeds to benefit Victoria Kirby, a student at Dodson School, who was paralyzed in an auto accident this summer.

Winning two games over the weekend, the Saco Wildfire volleyball team remains undefeated. Whitney Molina led the team with 12 kills and 13 of 27 digs.

Two former Malta graduates, now married, were “Coming home…” after living in N.D.; Erik and Shaylee (Bebee) Simanton had the opportunity and came home to their roots.

Rivalry stemming over from the early nineties between Malta and Glasgow would help ignite the Mustang football team next week after suffering a heartbreaking loss to Plentywood this week.

Damaireous Wiese, born to Aaron Wiese and Jennifer Evangelista, arrived and joined a brother, Damian.

Sept. 30, 1998

The Phillips County road, bridge and refuge workers were looking at becoming unionized. Of the 14 county employees in the departments, 86% had signed “authority cards” for paperwork processing.

Scoring two touchdowns in the first three minutes of play the Malta Mustangs were having a good night at their homecoming game against Harlem. They scored two more in the first quarter on their way to a 36-0 victory.

A crowd estimated at over 1,200 turned out for the first basketball game in the new Malta Jr./Sr. High School. The girl’s game went into overtime as they defeated Wolf Point.

Celebrating the 58th anniversary of Company D, 116th Quartermaster and 198th Engineer Company, local residents traveled to Moses Lake, WA for a reunion. George and Edna Hoynes, Cliff Lundstrom, Betty Kaufman and Dorothy Sutton of Malta and Esther Brosseau of Saco attended. A memorial service was held, scripture was read by Hoynes, a memorial tribute written by Donnie Dooner was read, followed by the playing of taps, and a reading of the 64 names of the former members known to be deceased.

Marine Private First Class Robby Aycock has graduated from training in Calif. He is the son of Gordon and Ruby Aycock of Billings and grandson of Iven and Katie Blatter of Malta.

Sept. 28, 1973

The Malta Mustangs 26-0 defeat of Browning was wrapped up in the fourth quarter when Jean Green picked off a Browning pass and returned 40 yards to seal the win.

W. A. Barnard, a native of Va., got together with three former students of his teaching days. William Spencer, Walter Risen and Bill Cotter had attended the Telegraph Creek School. At the age of 89, Barnard is still ranching.

The Ladies Golf Association purchased 10 portable black and white television sets and donated them to the Malta Hospital. Present for the event were Mrs. Wally Ohs, Mrs. Jim Larcombe, Mrs. Dan Solari, Mrs. Glenn Flatt, Mrs. Bill Ryan and Mrs. Tom Moran.

Judy Henry opened Judy’s Kut ‘N Kurl beauty salon for business in Hillcrest.

Funeral rites for LaDonna Itcaina, 34, were held on Friday. She is survived by her husband, Jean, and daughters, Leona, 8, and Teresa, 5.

Representing Malta at the State Horse Judging contest in Bozeman will be Kathy Charlton, Lynne Orahood, Diana Robinson, and Kathleen Murdock.

Sept. 30, 1948

Malta’s galloping Blue and White Mustangs opened the 1948 grid season Friday handing a 66-6 trouncing to Poplar.

Forty-seven registered coming two-year-old Hereford bulls will be offered for sale at the annual Northeastern Montana Hereford breeders bull show and sale. William Armington will be ringman and Norman Storbeck will be clerk. Consignors are Walter Campbell, N. J. Cummings, Everall Holman, Steve Holman, Walter Simpson and H. A. Spaller of Malta.

Most of the crops around the county have been harvested and are in storage on the farms. The average yield was 17 bushels per acre.

Thirty-five members of the Cannon Company 163rd Infantry, Montana National Guard were on hand as they were presented with a plaque recognizing them for their achievement in recruiting new enlistees.

Gerard DeWitt, Circle Diamond farmer, had been awarded a number of prizes on his Irish Cobber potato exhibits at the state fair in Helena.

Ella May Mattson, 35, died at her home in Dodson.

William Andrew Leader, Trine farmer, died of burns received when a pipe he was smoking set fire to a load of hay.

Lee Pancake and John Costello had entered high school. Delmar Edwards had enrolled in junior high.

R. W. Garland was the first of local sheepmen to deliver lambs to Malta for October delivery.

The William Dunbar family had moved back to town after spending the summer on the ranch near the Canadian line.

The Cree Indians, homeless and wanderers since the Riel Rebellion in Canada, had been notified that a home with a land allotment awaited them at the Onion Lake reservation in Canada if they would be good. Little Bear, chief of the tribe, had summoned his people for a last medicine talk before the tribe started north.

Frank Pierce, a bachelor living near Wagner, was shot and slightly injured by George Cunningham, same address, in an argument involving the ownership or use of a horse.

Dr. Barbour had established a medical practice at Zortman and was favorably impressed with the gold mining camp.
