One Nation, Under God
Time marches on and it is not always noticeable in any great manner unless one is aware of inevitable changes. Such is the aging of the world around us, and for those who live out of the area, coming home occasionally brings changes in the tour around town.
While there are few new homes and buildings being built, a casual tour might enlighten your memory as to "what was"...back in the "I remember..." days.
One bit of history is now just that...history. This last week the remains of the "old Mercantile" building came down. The origin of the building dates back to the days of Lochiel Edwards. Once used for a multitude of various storage places, the building only had a handful of owners over the years.
Inside the building, preserved in time, were old signs which were once affixed to the business. At a point in time it was a dray station, and through the various owners, became a central storage place.
George Knudsen purchased the parcel of land, and later sold it to his son, Gary. The lot was then sold to Brandon Millican, owner of Malta Ready Mix, who is in the process of dismantling the structure, through an individual who has painstakingly removed each layer of the structure. The wood is being repurposed and is likely to end up in picture frames, new walls in businesses and an assortment of new life possibilities.
Time does not stand still, even in the form of historic landmarks and buildings. At least now you know a few details about things you might remember in this little town alongside the railroad tracks.
