Enrollment counts at the kick-off of the new school year showed Dodson with 73 students, Whitewater has 52, and Saco enrollment is at 49 students.

Ashley Stuart, and her husband Jake, made the decision to move back to her surroundings and family. They, and their children Regan and Emree, were featured in the “Coming home” segment of the PCN.

The Saco-Hinsdale Wildfire volleyball team took on the Bainville Bulldogs and handed them four losses. Whitney Molina led the team with 13 kills and eight digs.

World War II veterans, Joe Eskildsen, Willis McKeon and Dr. Carl Totman were participants in the sixth Big Sky Honor Flight to Washington, DC.

Malta native Rebecca “Becky” Bruce was one of 14 Montana teachers who were selected to be recognized by Superintendent of Public Instruction Denise Juneau. Each teacher will receive a $3,000 stipend from the state in recognition of their achievements.

Mustang Coach Tad Schye would look to Reid Robinson and Quintan Boos, who combined for over two hundred yards in their loss to Huntley Project, to pull out a win over Roundup.

In a sometimes emotional sentencing hearing, District Judge John McKeon sentenced 17-year-old Emmitt Boschee until he reaches the age of 21. He was also fined $10,000, there was no restitution ordered as the defendant had reached a settlement in the civil case filed by the victim’s parents.

Dave Hines accomplished a long-time decision by graduating from Western College of Auctioneering. He opened Hines Auction Service and will be auctioning estates, farm equipment, business liquidations, antiques, estates, households and charities.

Sally and Troy Smith of Salt Lake City, UT are the proud parents of a boy, Ethan Willow, born Sept. 6, 1998. Maternal grandparents are Lee and Frances Demarais.

Though Coach Del Fried would have preferred a bit more competition, he was satisfied with the M-ette win over Poplar, scoring 80-26.

The PhillCo Economic Growth has expressed an interest in securing $200,000 from the Hard Rock Mine Trust fund the county commissioner’s control as a result of a settlement with Zortman Mining, Inc.

The Whitewater Penguins split season openers, falling to Grass Range 63-40; they rallied to take the Winifred game 51-26 over the weekend.

Stated in the Sheriff’s Log for the week: 10:06 p.m. – Sheriff’s office- Individual reported her car had been egged and cool whip smeared all over it while she was at the movies. Under investigation. (*no recipe was left at the scene).

Football Coach Scott King had his team running the shell game and kept the Conrad Cowboys guessing while running up a 31-14 win. Nate Fried rushed for 175 yards and Nick Oxarart added 55 yards.

Sept. 6, 1973

Paul Smith of Seattle, WA, pled guilty in District Court to burglary of Dobson Motors and the Tastee Freez drive-in on August 16. Arrested the following morning, he led officers to the places he had stashed tools and cigarettes taken from the establishments.

A year after Sleeping Buffalo Recreation Area east of Malta was closed by the Farmers Home Administration (FHA) because the SBRA was unable to meet the financial obligation. Richard Smiley of the State FHA met with the county commissioners in the spring and offered a sell-out price of $210,000. Another $275,000 would be needed to make it a going proposition. Commissioners rejected the plan, they were, “unable to ask taxpayers to pay for a dead horse.”

Mr. and Mrs. Dwayne Simanton announced the engagement of their daughter, Janine, to Craig Stiles, son of Mrs. Margaret Stiles and the late Harry Stiles. A wedding date of Nov. 17th was set.

A daughter was born to Dan and Helen Wiederrick, weighing seven pounds and three and five-eighths ounces (with born to teach written on the bottom of her feet).

Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Brown invite friends and family to the wedding of their daughter Elizabeth Susan to Michael Emond. Their wedding on Sept. 7th will be at the Lutheran Church at seven o’clock in the evening.

Coach Glen Flatt has Don Nevrivy, Chip Young, Roger Ereaux, Al Van Houdt, Dan Lundstrom, Jean Green, Doug Goodheart, Todd Smith, Jim Taylor, Pete Lumsden, Mike Sims, Byron Hould, Mike Simanton, Ed Cerkovnik, Steve Baeth, Chris Barthelmess, Mike Grant and Mark Boothe headed in as starters.

Jon Skaar joined the Malta Lutheran Church from 1973-1974 as the Intern.

Sept. 9, 1948

Several prominent citizens were arrested and arraigned in Justice Earl Hanson’s “JayCee Kangaroo” court on charges of not complying with the “Go Western” days in the Malta Fall Roundup and Rodeo to be held on Saturday and Sunday. Those arrested and their charges included N.W. Pete Dobson (wearing non-western clothes, fined six tickets, the largest fine of the day), and Sen. Fred L. Robinson (making an unlawful appearance without proper garb, paid a fine for five tickets, and was not allowed to make any political remarks). C. K. Hanson charged with “uncultivated appearance of a non-existent mustache” was charged two tickets.

Weaving rugs, saddle blankets and purses is the hobby of the Montana State Industrial School. So enthusiastic are the boys about weaving native Montana wool that Sylvester Donetti, instructor of the carpenter shop simply can’t make looms fast enough.

The weaving of the native Montana wool spun at the Angora mill in Malta has been introduced in all states by the welfare department. Gov. Sam C. Ford is encouraging the project to expand and advertise Montana’s natural resources.

Staff Sergeant Floyd Kodalen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lars Kodalen of Dodson, arrived in Dodson to spend a 46-day furlough. Serving with the Army of Occupation and Korea for the past two years Ssg. Kodalen has witnessed the new government gradually taking form in that country.

Lee Davison, Mustang head coach said, “These Malta kids have more fight and guts than the last several squads I have worked with.” He had received word that Malta has been transferred to the eastern class B from the northern class B league.

One of Montana’s most decorated war heroes, Robert L. Scott of Great Falls, was in Malta visiting. He was accompanied by a state university student Richard Grieb. The infantryman was decorated by Gen. Sir Bernard Montgomery, of the British army, for gallantry in action when in Europe. The English decoration is equivalent to the American Distinguished Service Cross, the second-highest award our nation can give. Scott’s other decorations include the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, four battle stars, a Free French Medal, the French Croix de Guerre, and Holland’s Order of Wilhelmina.

Fuller & Bossuot of Havre had been awarded the contract to build a $6,500 school at Saco.

An unidentified man was killed in a coulee about five miles south of town when Deputy Stock Inspector G. W. Hall, who had picked him up as a suspect in a horse-stealing case, ordered him to halt. Letters on his person were addressed to both James Reed and John Cornwell.

The boys at the Phillips ranch had captured five coyotes. They roped them in the open. B. M. Phillips was knocked unconscious when his horse fell with him.
