One Nation, Under God
The days closing out summer and welcoming autumn will be busy ones of importance to the military. The auxiliaries of the VFW and American Legion will observe some days of recognition and events together and will work earnestly to promote support for our Veterans, patriotism and Americanism.
The first day of every month is now being observed as “BE THE ONE” day and the focus is to be the one that is there for Veterans who might be struggling with suicide.
September 2 is Victory over Japan Day, the Air Force Birthday is September 18th.
The 10th of September each year aims to focus attention on the issue of suicide, reduce stigma and raise awareness, with efforts being made to give a single message that suicides are preventable.
As in the past years, the American Legion “Juniors” will be placing teardrop printouts at local businesses to take, pin on and wear to share awareness. Also, Kari Rae at the Villa Theatre will provide a message on the marquee on suicide awareness.
Besides those two days, Patriot Day is observed annually on September 11, to commemorate the tragic 9-11 incidents. Plans are being made to host a candlelight ceremony again, as in the past, and the public is invited to attend.
Annually, the third Friday of September is in observance of POW-MIA (Prisoner of War and Missing in Action) day and KIA (Killed in Action) is also observed this day. Plans for this observance are being completed.
With the KIA observance, the fourth Sunday of September is always Gold Star Mother Day. Malta will honor Gold Star Mother Mellissa Sandvick at the District American Legion meeting in Havre on September 10th at the Elk’s Club.
Both military auxiliaries always welcome new members. Contact any member for an application, or call if you have questions and would like more information.
