Jesse Simonson, his wife Carrie, and their three foster children have returned “home” to his roots in Whitewater, MT. to farm and ranch with his dad.

The Malta Mustang football team will open their season with a game against Huntley Project in Worden. Malta only has four returning starters.

Marko Manoukian, Extension Agent, reports that the harvest yields are above average with winter wheat averaging 50-60 bushels per acre; spring wheat was running 30-40 bushels per acre. Hail damage resulted in 11 claims affecting 2,208 acres in the county.

The race was shorter this year than it was at the first Saco Fun Days. Nevertheless, a shorter version, 2.5 miles, kicked off the 50th annual event on Saturday.

Malta M’ette volleyball girls showed promise, yet still lost to the Saco-Hinsdale Wildfire team in opening action. They were led by Laramie Scheffelmear with 13 kills; Kourtney Simonson had 10 defensive digs and Markelle Lett had nine aces.

Mandy Underwood accepted a call to service with the Las Vegas, Nevada Mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

John and Kari Carnahan indicated they, along with Tom Miller and Rick Starkey, are compiling an assessment of what it would cost to make the runway at the old airport useable for sanctioned drag racing. The group met with PhillCo Economic Director Paul Kunze to consider the idea.

A fire completely destroyed a New Holland combine owned by Bill Goertz on Sunday afternoon. The driver of the combine attempted to drive it to stubble, had to bail off the machine. The fire burned about 30-40 acres.

The Malta M’ettes head into a new basketball season with the opening game set against Poplar this weekend.

The goal was to serve 100 students lunch at the new Malta Junior/Senior High School cafeteria. Becky Green, head cook, said they are averaging 257 students at the cafeteria and the grade school is averaging 265 meals a day.

Former Malta M’ette Skyla Sisco was selected to represent Montana in the NCAA’s “Woman of the Year.”

Pegasus Gold, Inc. sent a check for $84,463 to the Phillips County Treasurer for payment of 1998 personal property taxes. The check represented 11/12th of what is owed. The entity has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

The Ladies Golf League winners were Roger’s Saloon team of Renee Leader, Brenda Koss, Christa Cummings and Toni Bishop.

Phil Sims, Mervin Weeres and Bob McEwen will cook up barbequed beef and beans for the Wagon Train feed at the rodeo arena on Labor Day.

Chief of Police Alert Fladland announced that everyone riding motorbikes will be required to have a driver’s license, this includes newspaper delivery boys.

Jack Kelly, President of the First Security Bank of Malta, announced that B. J. “Swede” Goodheart would be a new loan officer at the bank.

Charles Hawley, 31, of Hays, was killed in a one-vehicle accident. He was driving a car with his two brothers as passengers, all three were ejected in the rollover.

Accidents reported included Robert Fox who failed to negotiate a curve and went off the road, rolled three times down an embankment and landed the vehicle on its wheels; Fox was not injured but his two passengers were. A second accident involved Julia Minugh of Dodson and Augustus Jergesen of Harlem. They collided when his pickup struck the driver’s side of her car. The vehicles received damage, but the occupants were safe. Larry Johnson of Dodson ran into a cow and neither were injured. Lawrence Palmer of Malta was treated for minor cuts and injuries from a motorcycle wreck.

Weddings included Lou Ann Benzinger and Sherman Webb, and Judith Kangas and Larry Young.

The City Council agreed to hire Russaero Flying at $60 per aerial application to spray for mosquitos.

The City was notified that motorcycle riders were using the trails in the cemetery as raceways and the council asked the police to watch for violations there.

Howard and Revena Smith will be the lead wagon as the 4th Annual Milk River Wagon Train rolls into Malta on Labor Day.

Steve Baeth was installed as Master Councilor of the George W. Clay Chapter of DeMolay.

Sept. 2, 1948

A load of cattle owned by William Town shipped to Sioux City topped the Sioux City market recently. The 59 steers averaged 1,199 pounds and brought $40 per hundredweight.

Two hundred farmers, ranchers, townsmen, state, federal and county grazing group representatives fought seven different prairie fires in widely separated sections of Phillips County on Monday night. A “dry” thunderstorm climaxed a day of oppressive heat. The largest fire was at Carl Ohs’ range, covering four and a half miles long and about three and a half miles wide. Others with fires were Henry Smith, the Forbes brothers, Veseth Ranch, Bibeau Ranch and the KRM Ranch. The fires consumed 20,000 acres of grass and crops.

Enforcement of the state “Flipper” law is emphasized by Supervisor C. L. Sheridan. Sheridan warned cigarette flippers the grass is dry and flipping lighted cigarettes is punishable by law. Infractions are punishable with fines from $50 to $300 and jail sentences from five to 90 days.

Lauren Bruckner of Harb was the first man to register at the Selective Service Office under the new draft law. He is a veteran of WWII and will leave immediately where he will attend college. About 24 men registered the first day.

Delores Knudson and James Campbell exchanged wedding vows in an impressive ceremony on Sunday afternoon. Jeanne Knudson and George Campbell were attendants; Joanne Knudson and Wesley Southwick sang nuptial music accompanied by Mrs. Mabel Flesche.

William Mason, his small child, and his elderly father were badly shaken when their car overturned at a grade crossing in Malta.

Phillips County had 12 queen contestants in the Montana Queen Contest. They were Frances Dunbar (Vagg), Emma Smith, Edna Partridge (Sullivan), Ione Barrett, Dagney Hanson, Labonna Christensen, Ruth Barton, Marguerite Gagen (Runge), Mildred Porter, Mary Brown, Evelyn Watson (Garland) and Ruth Millar (Clark).

Thirty-seven Mormon families from southern Idaho had decided to move to the Milk River valley and make their homes on farms in Phillips County.

B.D. Phillips left for Helena with $20,000 in bullion from the Zortman mines.

Ringbone Sam of Phillips and Tomato Can Bill of Hinsdale paid Malta a visit. Tomato Can Bill remained as a guest of the county for 15 days.

Eighty cars of cattle and 48 double-deckers of sheep had been shipped from Malta in the week.
