Phillips County was one of six in the state with West Nile-positive mosquitoes.

Malta Chamber of Commerce members held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for A & J Mobile Fleet Repair, which was opened by Jay Weston and his family.

Viola “Vi” Beyer was the guest of honor at a surprise birthday party celebrating her 100th birthday.

Bonnie Starr won the Marian Hills Ladies Golf Tournament Championship and low gross honors in the tournament. Gloria Klind won low net honors.

Malta Schools released the enrollment numbers: Elementary has 207; Middle School has 112; and High School reports 162.

Aug. 19, 1998

A parent, Stan Davis, attended the school board meeting and was a critic of the commercial company the school was trying to bring in to sniff out illegal drugs, and/or firearms. He stated the district could get the same services through the Sheriff’s Office; Undersheriff Tom Miller could arrange for the services, free of charge.

The community sprang into action when smoke was billowing above the new Junior/Senior High School; however, it turned out to be a nearby wooden building. During a lightning storm the night before about 8 PM, the building owned by Gary and Janet Baden had been hit; and wasn’t visible for some time.

Winners in the Malta Dirt Daubers “Big Sky Treasures” flower show recently were Dolores Andrews, Florence Schumacher and Jane Ereaux. Madelyn Anderson was a Sweepstakes winner.

Katie Veseth will represent Malta during the 1998 Montana Junior Miss program in Missoula as 24 young ladies vie for the state title.

Local artist Judy Michael has three paintings in the Resident Professional and Juried Competition at the Montana State Fair in Great Falls. One “Old Windmill East of Town” painting was awarded the most creative work.

Aug. 16, 1973

Mr. and Mrs. Al Meyer celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, a buffet lunch and reception were served by their family.

The Malta softball team won the Harlem Softball League last week to receive the championship trophy. On the team were Brian Robertson, Dwayne Simanton, Sr., Hubert Simanton, Jim Nevrivy, Duane Walker, Dwayne Simanton, Jr., Tim Long, Doug Sabo, Lance Ivanish and Rob Wiprud.

Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Southwick announce the engagement of their daughter, Holly Beth, to Mark Bourassa. No wedding date has been set.

Kari Benzinger and Jim Opheim were married at the Lutheran Church in Malta.

Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Ereaux announce the engagement of their daughter, Lori Marie, to Warren Thomas Taylor, son of Warren and Alyce Taylor. A Sept. 22 wedding is planned.

Patsy Doyle was named as the replacement for Nels Boe in the County Agent position; she has spent the last four years as Assistant Agent in Hill County.

Julie Henderson became the bride of Tim Bullard on August 18th at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

The Lauren Bruckner’s and Harvey Bruckner’s celebrated their 25th anniversary at the Malta Community Church.

Aug. 19, 1948

Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Dean will officially take over the management of the American Legion Plunge on Sept. 1st on a one-year contract. They will succeed Mr. and Mrs. Ted Diddier, who has operated the business for the past three years.

Young Bud Phillips, riding The Doctor, showed up well in the racing program. He had trouble holding his horse to the rail in the turns, but more experience will mold him into a good jockey.

A graduate of Montana State College in Bozeman is Dean Robertson, who will fill the position of vocational agriculture instructor. He was a pilot in WWII and has been an advisor of the FFA during the summer; he is married.

Highway traffic violations and accidents provided considerable grist for the justice courts for the past two weeks. Edward Ewals forfeited a $5 fine on a charge of careless driving; Charles Hoekerger of Harlem was assessed a $5 center-line violation. John Minugh of Dodson was fined $25 on a reckless driving charge. He was hospitalized for about a week at the Agency hospital after driving off the road into a burrow pit in a car owned by Victor Nordund of Dodson.

New FFA Advisor, Dean Robertson, said there were about 90 exhibits at the fair this year. George French of Wagner had the largest number of exhibits in the FFA entries at the fair, followed closely by Wayne Jacobs of Whitewater and Roger Green of Malta.

The first standard boys’ and girls’ pig club was organized in the West Alkali community with the following members: Walter Anderson, Luella Murphy, Edna Wiest, Johnna Slind and Levi Shelton, Jr.

Jesse Orr drowned in the Missouri River while attempting to cross at the UL crossing on horseback.

The five-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Lake of the north country was injured when a pump fell on him,

The following Phillips County women had returned from Dillon where they attended summer school at the State Normal College: Lucille McCormick, Mrs. Lester Hartsock, Ada Brady, Ruth Millar and Mrs. Harry McConnel.

Sam Duvall, an old timer in the Little Rockies, died in Malta after a short illness. Rev. T. F. Rucker officiated at services at Grace Chapel.

Mrs. Louis Herschkowitz was ill with typhoid fever.

The fall term of school had opened with an enrollment of about 100 children.

Mrs. L. C. Edwards and her children had returned from a trip to Canada.

The Great Northern operator at Wagner had been run out of town by a bunch of tough cowboys and other strike sympathizers. The telegraphers strike had been called off, but an investigation was being made of the Wagner atrocity.
