Ryan Paul has earned an AAS degree in Land Surveying and Civil Engineering from Dakota State College of Science in Wapheton, ND.

The Malta City Council will hold a special meeting Monday at noon to consider what price they would charge and what restrictions they would impose to sell water for a firm hired to supply it to a work camp that will be constructed near Hinsdale during the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline.

The City currently sells water at $2 for 300 gallons to residents outside the city who haul water; Mayor Shyla Jones suggested the rate be set at about $5.

Grant O’Brien earned first place and Reba Doucette earned two seconds and a third place as seven members of the Malta Swim Team competed in the Glendive Swim Meet July 6-7.

Rumors were dispelled and squashed as Bob Ereaux, owner of the Westside Self Service told the PCN the addition was only to add room to the deli; it would also add seating space, more storage, and a unisex bathroom with a shower. Sorry folks, no new restaurant.

Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Warren announce the upcoming marriage of their daughter, Miss Catherine Warren, to Bryan Hunt. An August ceremony is planned.

Farmer Larry Lodmell of the Bennet Lake Community took a week to bring in a picture of his tractor stuck in the mud (as in belly-bogged, sink or swim mode) to show the depth of the mud in his fields. The tractor made the decision to sink; it took several weeks and many warm days of drying the field to remove the Versatile to high and drier ground.

Despite a frigid breeze in the morning, 66 people left on a conservation district tour shortly after 8 a.m., heading south to the ranch of the 1991 outstanding conservationist, Greg Oxarart.

From there the participants traveled to plots of interest at Troy Blunt’s. They also were able to see the innovative drill built by Dale Veseth.

After a tour of the historic Hartman Barn, a picnic followed at Camp Creek.

Miss Nell Kronschanabel, 95, was one of the people attending the 100th anniversary celebration of the Little White Church, and may just be the oldest living member of the church. Her father, William G. Dunbar, a charter member of the church donated funds to help build the church. She had been baptized by “Brother Van” (Orsdel) as an infant. She had recently returned to Malta and resides in the nursing home.

Thad Giblette, nurse practitioner, will start work in Malta on August 1, according to Larry Putnam, the hospital administrator. The draft was reviewed for the construction of a new hospital and was shown at the meeting also.

The Sheriff’s office received a report of vandalism to the gate posts and trailer at the Malta City Landfill on July 2. Vandals gained entry to the trailer through a window that had been broken. Missing were two hand-held radios and chargers. On July 7 another report was filed for two broken windows on the trailer and stolen was a Bearcat scanner and antenna.

The Austin Homestead owned by Jean and Jeanie Austin Green is one of 79 farms and ranches across Montana in a 141-page book chronicling homes and ranches that have stayed under ownership of the same family for a century or longer.

The Phillips County News will sponsor the second annual homemade ice cream freeze-off on July 25 during Outlaw Days. Contestants prepare their recipe at home, then bring it down for the freezing before the judges.

Erica McKeon, a 1995 graduate of Malta High School, was selected for the 1998 Mustang Foundation Award, in the amount of $500.

A July 4 head-on collision resulted in the death of a 16-year-old teenager, and two others were in serious condition. Three individuals were in the one vehicle and none of them wore seat belts, none of them were ejected from the vehicle.

County Commissioners adopted a policy that will insure that the public has advance notice through a weekly agenda of matters of “significant interest” on which they are to act. This brings the commission into compliance with Montana’s open meetings law and is patterned after a resolution recommended to counties by the Montana Association of Counties.

Three Malta students are among the 29 entrants in the Anaconda Company’s 13th annual scientific achievement program. They are Bernadine Malin, Dale McNamara, and Michael Smith.

Mike Haugen and Butch Larcombe left Friday to join the Montana group at the Key Club International in Chicago, Illinois.

Malta swim coach Brian Robertson said they are expecting about 45 swimmers for a dual swim with Glasgow on Saturday. Jim Dancer, pool manager, said there will be no open swimming on Saturday, however, there will be evening swimming as usual.

Tom and Alyce Taylor returned to the same church they were married in to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. They were honored at a reception at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Wagon boss Bud Hasler will represent Malta and the Milk River Wagon Train at the Wolf Point golden anniversary next week. He will make the 120-mile trek from Thoeny to Wolf Point with a crew of Monte Rothie, Grant Cruikshank, Jim Allen, Gerhard Eich, Gail Smith, Jake Wiederrick, Dale Freitag and Don Watson. Hasler’s wagon will be pulled by a fresh broke team of four horses.

Also making the trip will be Fred Allery, with a wagon from Whitewater; Don Olson will be side riding for Allery. Wagon Train chairman Lou Perry will spend one day with the train as it nears Wolf Point.

Archie Freestone was guest of honor during the monthly birthday celebration at the nursing home last week. Helping him commemorate his 81st birthday were his brother, Ernie, and the staff and well-wishers throughout the community.

The Veterans Administration recently announced that avocational and recreational courses have been eliminated under the provisions of the GI Bill of Rights. The new law specifies that courses such as dancing, photography, bartending, and personality development will not be paid for out of VA funds.

Clarence Gallinger, a former rancher from the Missouri River country died at a Billings hospital. Mrs. William Armington, his cousin, left this morning for Fromberg, where funeral services will be held Friday.

Only one Montana road death marred the state highway patrol’s effort for an accident-less Independence holiday.

Seven county boys will attend American Legion Boys’ State: George Ross Robinson, Curtis Smith, Roger LaFond, Thomas Ring, Oland Munson, and James Nordlund.

Pat Paterson was hospitalized after receiving a broken leg and injured an arm in an accident at the Hinsdale rodeo.

Joe Baginski received painful back and leg injuries while he was working on the job of wrecking the old frame addition to the Trafton Dorr store. Part of the wall being demolished fell on him. Both ankles were sprained and he received lower back and vertebrae injuries. He was taken to the Survant Hospital.

If you’ve ever watched clowns tumbling from a car, you may have suspected trick or trap doors or something. There’s no trick other than cramming human bodies into the car once the seats have been removed. Fourteen popped out of a standard sedan at the Cole Bros. Circus. (*I managed 29 in my van.)

“Chaperone your cigarette—don’t let it go out alone” is good advice and the slogan won a Malta gal a slogan contest. Lillian Castleman Wilkison wrote the winning entry, she is a graduate of Malta.

On sale at the local grocery store: Watermelon at 4 cents a pound; 10 pounds of potatoes are 47 cents.

Fourth of July celebrations around the county included a picnic and program at the Thomas Caves home on Alkali, while northern Phillips County people went across the Canadian line to take in a baseball game and picnic. Telegraph Creek residents spent the day at the Lineberger Ranch in Garfield County and a family reunion and neighborhood picnic was held at the Joseph Stearns home at Ynot.

Drilling was progressing at the Bowdoin well. A depth of 2,775 feet had been logged.

Mrs. Rose Lusk died at her home in Zortman of “galloping consumption.” Rev. Snape of Malta officiated at funeral services in Zortman.

E. W. King had purchased the August mine near Landusky and that camp was expecting a boom in gold business.

Some party of parties had maliciously and wantonly cut and destroyed nine miles of fence on the B. D. Phillips property. The wire had been snipped between each post and the fence was completely ruined. A thousand-dollar reward was offered by Phillips for the miscreants.

Mort Burrows was seriously injured when struck on the head by a falling rock in the Ruby mine.

Louis Goslin had returned from Great Falls with a new stagecoach for the Malta-Zortman stage run.
