The Landusky Foundation, Inc. History Fair and Fun Weekend will be held Friday, July 5-7th. This is one of the fundraisers to raise funds for the maintenance of the Old Landusky School and the Community Center. Join us to renew memories, swap stories and have a fun weekend.

Phillips County ranks 16th out of 46 Montana counties as the healthiest place to live, according to the 2013 County Health Rankings and Roadmaps published by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Only 46 of the state’s 56 counties were rated.

Teachers, administrators, and non-union employees such as cooks, janitors and aides will get a 3.81 percent pay increase in the first year of a two-year contract ratified by the Malta School Board last week at their meeting. A collective bargaining contract calls for a 2.8 percent increase the following year.

Tucker Schye was named defensive MVP at the Knights of Columbus Badlands Bowl, after recording 12 tackles and one sack. He was part of Montana’s All-Star Team which won the game, 43-29.

Malta Swim Team member Darrow Messerly claimed two first-place medals at the Roundup Swim meet over the weekend. He won the 9-10 age bracket 50 freestyle and 50 breaststroke events. Teammates Grace Doucette, Marcus Woods and Tate Carney also earned first-place medals.

Joann Hammond and Missy Boos took a try at riding a mechanical bull during the IHI family fun day held at the Sleeping Buffalo.

The City Council gave the approval to annex the property of Mick’s Honda into the city limits. In other business, City Clerk Gene Koch noted that Lonnie Peacher will be retiring on July 1st. Sheriff Gene Peigneux reported that the city’s share of the law enforcement budget would be $156,000.

Mayor Byron Ereaux reported that the city swimming pool opened on May 7 and that a new pool cover has been installed and is working well.

Ceri Demarais and Catherine Warren were award winners at the 4-H County Demonstration Day. Ceri won the Beginning Junior category, and Catherine won the Advanced Junior category.

IHI independent sales representatives presented just over $2,000 to two local charities over the weekend. Deputy Scott Moran accepted a check for the Phillips County Search and Rescue, and Board Director Curtis Starr accepted a check for the Northern Montana Youth Ranch.

There were 109 contestants who participated in the Montana Fun Day Roundup Charity Event at the Sleeping Buffalo as part of the International Heritage, Inc. get-together. In the Wild Cow Milking Contest, the team of Bim Oxarart, Tony Boos and Greg Oxarart took first; Chad Simonson, Matt Simonson and Jerey McEwen placed second.

In honor of the Golden Wedding Anniversaries of Laurin and Mary Ellen Bruckner and Harvey and Elvera Bruckner, an open house would be held at the Community Church on June 27 from 7-9 p.m.

An Open House Reception at Trafton Park would honor Loren and Cathy Johnson on June 27th at 2 p.m.

June 19th at 7 p.m. there will be a no-host farewell and “roast” in honor of Chris and Kent Williams.

You are invited to help celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Lester and Vivian Knapp at the Senior Citizens Center from 2-5 p.m. on June 28th.

Malta School Board trustees voted to approve both a half-day and a full-day kindergarten for the coming school term. The half-day class will be held in the old band room.

Malta resident Oscar Guttormson was shown pointing to the two-inch mark on his backyard rain gauge on Monday. By Tuesday afternoon another .25 inches of rain had collected, with a forecast for more. The moisture was much needed and appreciated.

At the recent 4-H Livestock Judging, winners were Mark Doucette, Patti Green, Brian Green, Angelia Emond and Michael Flansaas, in the Junior Division. For the Senior Division, winners were Marianne Emond, Bruce Hould, Pat Doucette, and Brent Waters.

Earning the right to compete at the State High School Rodeo were Joan Robinson, Patti Sue Smith, Diana Robinson, Todd Smith, Jean Green and Dale Simanton of Malta; Warren Bell, Bill Nordlund, Phil Bell, Merrill Gray and Kelvin Bishop of Dodson. There were 129 participants in the rodeo.

Connie Allen, after a profession as a “country baker” for over 50 years has decided to retire and recently sold the Malta Bakery to Harry Carpenter. He was 16 years old when he went to work in his hometown of Plattsmouth, Nebraska.

Debbie Tams, 1972 District 1 rodeo queen, placed the queen tiara on Glenda Cusker of Wolf Point, as Joan Robinson watched. Glenda and Joan tied for queen, both received queen tiaras, a bouquet of roses, and both will represent District 1 at the State Rodeo to be held in Malta July 6-8.

Cars driven by Ed Gjersing of Malta and Gerald Beaudette of Big Sandy met and collided when Gjersing went to make a left turn and Beaudette attempted to pass him. There were no injuries to the drivers or their passengers.

A car belonging to Glenn Dolphay of Dodson was almost totaled out in an accident in Dodson on Tuesday night. The late model car had been purchased Tuesday morning. While driving west out of Dodson a right tire blew causing Dolphay to lose control, skid several hundred feet down the highway, into a ditch and strike a tree. Neither Dolphay nor his passenger, Lester Wilke were injured.

One of the highest prices ever paid for fat cattle in Blaine County was recorded when Armour & Co. purchased 230 long yearlings steers from Charles Holman, Phillips and Blaine a stockman and feeder for $31 a hundred. A short time ago he also sold 5,000 head of fat lambs to Armour & Co., for 23 cents a pound. The lambs averaged 115 pounds each, it was reported.

Malta will celebrate July 4th this year on July 5th under the joint sponsorship of the Malta Legion Post and the Buster Deo Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, it was announced by Pete Nix for the VFW and Pete Hoagland for the Legion. The parade will include the Cooties, floats from various business places, the Saddle Club, the Regina, Sask., Boys’ Band, the Malta Mustang Band, the Girl Scouts and other organizations. There will be a horseshoe pitching contest, and a greased pig contest, which will be supervised by Bart McHenomey.

Tom Schurr, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Schurr will report at the US Naval Academy at Annapolis on June 17, to begin his studies. He is a graduate of the class of 1948 from Malta.

About 28 enlisted men and two officers of Cannon Company, 163rd Infantry, Malta’s National Guard unit left for the first time since before the war. They will report to Ft. Harrison from June 13-27. Lt. Gordon Peters and Lt. Clifford Lundstrom are in command of the Malta guardsmen.

State papers were pointing out that northern Montana was going through such hard times that schools in many districts had been closed due to a lack of funds. However, there had been no difficulty in raising $300,000 for the Dempsey-Gibbons fight, July 4, at Shelby.

Harvey Leidy, a Canadian suspected of being a booze runner was arrested with 13 cases of Canadian whisky seized by Deputy Sheriff Jacobson.

A highway crew had been busy marking the Glacier trail and Malta was now officially on the Miami, Fla., to Portland, Ore., through highway.

The Bowdoin well was drilling at 2,600 feet and everyone was happy about the prospects for oil.

Mrs. Arthur Murphy, Sr., died after an illness of about two months.

Wayne C. Holland, 16, died at the home of his parents south of Malta.

Tom Hines, who owned an 8-acre truck garden near Malta, was planning on new spuds for the Fourth of July.

Eight cents per head was the price agreed on by shearers and sheepmen at the local shearing pens.

“Ringbone Sam” a gentleman of more than local celebrity, was a guest of the county for 30 days. Sam came up before Judge Wilson on a minor offense and was given a fine of $9 and a 30-day sentence with strings attached. The strings were that Sam was to be out of town in 20 minutes. He was given 20 minutes and a clear trail, but the local constable found him still within the city a full 15 hours after the 20 minutes and he was hied to the local bastille.

John Richards, a herder on the L. M. Powell ranch at Saco, was killed by lightning.
