Two young men were arrested and charged following a complaint called in by a landowner. The two drove through a field of spring wheat leaving damage. Charges included minors in possession of alcohol, criminal trespass to property, criminal mischief, obstructing a peace officer, tampering with a witness, and several traffic violations.
Winning awards at the First State Bank Car Show were Oliver Mickey (Alberta), longest distance traveled; Dat Smilie, Darryl Seeley Memorial; Juanita Moorehouse, People’s Choice car; Mark Newby, People’s Choice tractor; and Chris Sather, People’s Choice motorcycle.
June 24th was the date set for a change of plea in the case of a delinquent charged in the accidental shooting of a youth on October 23, 2010.
On June 1st a cow was shot on the Whitaker Ranch north of Saco; the owner of the cow recognized the vehicle and attempted to catch it, however, it eluded him. An order signed by Youth Court Judge McKeon was served on two of the three involved. They were charged with several charges, all felonies.
Sandy Kovach was the winner of the first place Sportsman Class at the Drag Strip races; Brad Olson, of Glasgow, won first place in the Super Pro Class and Jack Gingery took first place in Pro Class. Motorsports president Greg Kirkwood had the dubious honor of presenting the trophies.
A tough, cute, and dedicated toddler, Spencer Gibbs, was headed to the Grand Nationals Wrestling!
Jim Fauth and his son-in-law, Craig Neufeld of Billings, were able to experience thankfulness in its rawest form on a trip to Ethiopia, a country in Africa, in a project to bring water to the villages.

Tera Lankford of Dodson was listed on the President’s List at the University of Nevada. She is a business major with foreign languages as a minor.
The Bowdoin National Wildlife Refuge could become a sort of pre-conditioning site for black-footed ferrets who would ultimately be reintroduced in sites in Phillips County and around the state.
The northern highway (Hwy 242) in the county can expect some delays as work begins on a $185,000 facelift between milepost 7 and 18, north of Malta.
Malta’s Ida Paulson, now living in Cut Bank, was chosen as the Parkview Senior Citizen of the Year. The mother of ten children, she was widowed at the age of 47 with four of the ten still living at home, the youngest being four years old.
Brothers Kenny, Kirk, and Kevin Reichelt, and cousin, Melanie Green, received perfect attendance awards from Whitewater School.
The young, the strong, the timid and the determined were practicing for the first annual swim meet to be held this weekend.
The Philips County Health Care Fund Raiser committee of Larry Putnam, Ted Kelly, Lonnie Link, Cliff Rustad, Ken Wiederrick, and Swede Goodheart were pictured with a horse trailer that would be the grand prize in the drawing this year.
Shalaine Taylor and Lee Allen were married in Idaho. Attending from here were her parents, her sister, Melissa, and Janelle McEwen.

A dangerous fire late in the evening did serious damage, up to $100,000, at the Big Flat Electric Cooperative office. The building was built in 1954.
Mary Kron, the school librarian, was honored by her fellow teachers at Malta High School. She had devoted “33 years of faithful service” to the teaching profession. Supt. James Nordlund presented her with the first Golden Age pass to all MHS activities.
Mrs. Thelma Turner, a former Malta teacher, is retiring after 51 years in the profession. Her retirement party served as a send-off as she accepted an assignment with the Peace Corps for 26 months and will be leaving for the Philippine Islands.
Four generations of the Mitchell family reside on the family ranch. The youngest, Robin, joined her dad, Craig, his dad, Winston, and her great-grandfather, V. C. Mitchell.
Winners in the Junior Division of livestock judging were Angela Emond, Mark Doucette, Brian Green, and Michael Flansaas.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Pankratz were honored on their 25th wedding anniversary at the Little White Church. Their children Steve (Ekalaka), Mark, Keith, Coleen, Billy, Tommy, and Robbie, all of Malta, hosted the reception.
Scott Southwick, band and music instructor for the Phillipsburg school system, was named the Phillipsburg 1973 Citizen of the Year. The son of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Southwick, he serves on the MT Drug Program and is active in the Lions Club, teaches youth fellowship in church, directs the choir, directs the Golden Nugget Drill Team, teaches science at the junior high and is a lab tech at the hospital.
Lloyd and Boyd Emond are the first set of twins ever to be graduated from the Colorado State University College of Veterinarian Medicine and Biomedical Science. They are the sons of Mr. and Mrs. Harmil Emond and are graduates of Malta’s class of 1966.
Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Blatter announce the engagement of their daughter, Ruby, to Gordon Aycock of Great Falls.

Mr. and Mrs. William Scheele were notified by the war department that the body of their son, Raymond Scheele, who died of wounds received while in the service to his country during the Italian campaign of the last war, had arrived in the U.S. The body was sent to Miles City where the American Legion will have charge pending the arrival of the family. The body was laid to rest Tuesday in the Military Cemetery at Custer, MT, with full military honors.
Three Canadian Indians are in the county jail and will probably be here for some time as the result of fines and sentences imposed by Police Magistrate Nellie Chase of larceny charges. They had been looting cars and trucks and had taken clothing, groceries, tools, suitcases, and anything the owners had left in the vehicles.
A three-hour show drew an estimated 4,500 that crowded the area grounds to see the first annual Bar 2N to be staged at the rodeo grounds. Fifty-seven cowboys participated. Prizes were awarded for the best horse and rider in each club, George Pancake, Hannah Armington, and Brent Boothe were Malta club winners.

Small boys of the community had been swimming in the irrigation canal in Malta and had offended some of the citizens. The sheriff’s office was urging the boys to be more modest.
A golf club was being organized and a course laid out east of town.
The old water tank at the Great Northern yards collapsed after 25 years of faithful service. In the meantime, trains stopping at Malta had to stock up at Wagner or Bowdoin.
Miss Grace Wolf underwent a major operation at a Great Falls hospital.
The casing had arrived for the Ohio Well near Landusky and the Bowdoin Well east of Malta. Drilling was to be resumed at both places.

Frank Stevens’ saloon at Saco was robbed of $35 in nickels and about $20 in silver and six razors were taken from the barber shop operated in connection.
Shearing was underway at the plants and ranches in the county. About 150,000 head were booked for shearing at the Ed Pierson plant while about 140,000 were to be sheared at the Phillips plant. Another 100,000 would go through the Baeth Brothers plant.
