Malta American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, VFW, the American Legion, and Chamber of Commerce invited the public to join them in celebrating Memorial Day as it was intended to be - to pay tribute to our nation’s military heroes, both present and past. The weekend kicks off with a breakfast on Saturday, and a parade and BBQ on Monday.
The Malta City Council had secured a grant to install a handicap lift for the swimming pool.
An article, printed in the PCN during WWII, was found in the belongings of Marjean Carnahan after her death. It was a unique, humorous story about a former Malta resident, Donald Harvey Smith.
The Mustang Foundation presented $21,050 to graduating seniors in the Class of 2013.
Malta would be hosting the state dart tournament in October, as per word from the City. Phillips County Motor Sports was also given permission to hook up to city water and sewer at the track at the old airport south of town.
The City of Malta was presented a copy of a Saco ordinance which prohibits motor homes, campers and recreational vehicles from being parked on town property for right of ways for more than five days and provides the authority to remove violators.
Malta Chapter of Walleyes invites kids in the fifth, sixth, and seventh grades to apply for the opportunity to participate in Camp Walleye. Kids will start the weekend with breakfast at Westside, then head to Fourchette Bay for an overnight trip of fishing, camping and fun.

Ten young women would vie for the Junior Miss Scholarship Program; they are Jami Brogan, Ashley Hammond, Billie Sky Haynes, Lauren Howell, Shonda Jenkins, Jill Meyer, Amy Underwood, Katie Veseth, Mindy Shores and April Simonson.
Alanna Bruckner, a third grader from Dodson, was selected as the May Student of the Month. She is described as a very conscientious student, a well-disciplined child, who has a wonderful personality and smile. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Bruckner.
Students of Delmar Henry, Kendra Veit and Bernie Wasser’s seventh-grade history classes are capturing history and will capture and publish their collections and writings in a book, “Historic Walking Tour of Malta.” They will preserve history while doing research; about 25 buildings will be researched.
The nieces and nephews of Mrs. Alvina Random request your presence at the celebration of her 90th birthday on May 23, from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at the Little White Church. Your friendship is her most precious gift, no other gifts, please.
Jim Taylor, Jr., wrote a letter to the Editor asking readers if they know where their dogs are all night. Taylor had recently lost seven pregnant ewes to three dogs with collars on, who came to his farm two miles west of town.
Air Force Airman Michael Murieen has graduated from the utilities systems apprentice course at Sheppard Air Force Base, Wichita Falls, TX. He is the son of Patty Anderson of Whitewater.
Katharine Watson has been selected as the Phillips County Senior Citizen of the Year by the County Council on Aging.
Members of the Dirt Daubers Garden Club planted a tree at Good Sam Nursing Home on Arbor Day in honor of former club member, Molly Cibulski. They planted a tree at the National Guard Armory in memory of former member Etta Cummings.

Graduating seniors at Dodson will have Jerry Lankford as their guest speaker. The nine graduates are Margie Shaver, Valedictorian, and Lorelei Adams, Salutatorian, and classmates Penny Braach, Verna Brenden, Kenneth Johnson, Casey Kienenberger, James Newby, Mike Rocheleau, and Holly Wilke.
Sgt. Jerry Hanson received an engraved watch for his 20 years of service with the National Guard. The award was presented by Capt. Kenneth Wiederrick, commanding officer of the unit.
Nine Malta High School seniors attended the Elks Lodge district awards banquet in Glasgow. Seniors Patti Sue Smith, Jim Molloy and Gail Blunt received leadership awards and cash prizes.
Twenty-seven members of the Malta Unit of the Montana National Guard received awards at a ceremony held at the regular drill on May 6. Awards were presented by Capt. Kenneth Wiederrick for four years of Army Reserve Component Achievement; Pfc. Kenneth Stahl and Sp. 4 Edward Peigneux received the Bureau Recruiter badge.
Louis Ivanish, District Inspector, installed VFW Post officers: Leonard Anderson (Commander), John Flansaas (Sr. Vice), Robert Soper (Jr. Vice), Dwayne Raymond (Quartermaster), N.J. Cummings (Advocate), Bill Black (Chaplain), Henry Cole (Surgeon), Dixon Grant (Historian), and Monte Robertson (Patriotic Instructor).

The boys in agriculture class took a 100-question test and Loren Kenny received 99, Delmar LaBrie 98, Lee Didier 94 and Robert Jaynes 91.
Miss Margaret Davidson, who has been postmaster at Wagner since August 1, 1921, resigned the position effective June 1, she announces. She has served continuously for 27 years.
Buddy Poppy chairman Mrs. Lulu Ebaugh, said “…in contributing liberally when buying a VFW Buddy Poppy, a citizen is putting into a concrete form of action his tribute to the memory of those who died overseas guarding our way of life against the designs of aggressor nations.”
Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in Saco Tuesday morning for Miss Catherine Margaret Kelly, an 80-year-old Saco woman who took her own life at the Mearl Hetrick place on Friday night.
The Saddle Club divided into committees to arrange for entertainment, George Pancake, John Godfrey, C.K. Hanson, Norris Boothe, Stan Boothe and Svien Holt are members for June. July members are D.R. Cornell, Kyle Wiese, Art Komis, Adrian Durocher and John Hagen. For August they are Charles St. Jacque, Ray Lind, Dick Pancake, Sid Hould, Charley Keeney and Shorty O’Neil.
At the Survant Hospital sons were born to Mr. and Mrs. William Brayton, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Grayson, and Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Sundin, and a daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Norman Lingle. Deaths noted were: Charles Hess and infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Grayson.

Walter Best had been arrested on the Missouri River and charged with manufacturing moonshine which he sold at country dances.
Miss Maud Perring, Malta teacher and Frank Hromas of the Montana Power were married by Rev. T. F. Rucker.
Steve Waller, a well-known local man, had died of moonshine poisoning.
The Legion Post had prepared a program for Memorial Day. Marshall of the Day was to be Herb Kibler, Legion Post Commander, Veterans of the Civil War, Spanish-American War and World War, fraternal orders, Campfire Girls and Boy Scouts were to march in the parade to the cemetery.
Fred Grabofsky was in from his farm at Caldwell, reporting that crops were in excellent condition.
A son was born to Mrs. Claud Hanson.
Day Leahy had discontinued his stage service between Malta and Zortman.

Nick Schmitz had instituted proceedings charging Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kertz, Sandy Martin, George Brown and William Martin with kidnapping his daughter.
B.D. Phillips had been offered 25 cents for his wool clip of 400,000 pounds.
Malta has decided to celebrate the fourth of July. Crops were good, range grass was good and livestock was in good condition so there was good cause to celebrate.
