Deputy acted properly in Landusky shoot-out
A Phillips County sheriff's deputy involved in a deadly shoot-out last September in Landusky with an escaped murderer got a clean bill of health last week from a coroner's inquiry and department personnel got accolades from state investigators for their investigation.
It was the first time deputy Brian Robinson of Zortman had publicly told what happened just after noon on Sept. 19, 1997, when he was forced to shoot and kill Charles Carpenter, 32, an escaped murderer. Carpenter's lover and half-sister, Henrietta Clark, 28, also died in the shoot-out but was not killed by Robinson.
I Have a Question!
A reader writes: "Domestic cats are becoming a huge problem in Malta, causing tens of thousands of dollars in damage to neighbors' screens, doors, trees, shrubs and vegetable, and flower gardens. Cat owners apparently have no respect for their neighbors' private property rights. Many people have started live-trapping cats and many others would like to. Why won't the animal control officer pick up the trapped cats and dispose of them?"
City Clerk Gene Koch responded by saying if a city resident has trapped a stray cat and wants it destroyed, the animal control officer will pick it up. The citizen should report the trapped cat to the sheriff's dispatcher who logs in the call and then will contact the animal control officer who will respond as soon as is feasibly possible. If the animal isn't picked up by the animal control officer, you can always complain to the city office, mayor, or councilman.

Guilfoyle, Pekovitch set two school records
Malta M-ette tracksters Maria Guilfoyle and Leeann Pekovitch combined for seven first-place finishes and set two school records in a recent team victory at the Havre Invitational.
Guilfoyle, a sophomore, won the 100 and 200-meter runs and both hurdle events. Pekovitch, a sophomore, won the javelin, shot put, and discus. In addition, the two girls joined Cheryl Keller and Kim Wiederrick to help the M-ette's place first in the 1600-meter relay.
Guilfoyle's :26.1 time in the 200 bettered a school record time of :26.49 set by Becky Nelson in the 1980s. Guilfoyle's time was also a Havre meet record bettering a time set by Margie Connors of Glasgow. Pekovitch's javelin toss of 144-10 bettered the mark set two years ago by Laura Matthew's of better than 137 feet.

Storm Worst in 25 Years for Big Flat
Last weekend's storm was the most disastrous in the 25-year history of the Big Flat Electric Cooperative, reports George Hoynes, manager.
Rain, snow, ice, and high winds were factors the Big Flat crew faced. Freezing rain built ice on wires until they were two inches in diameter and then they were whipped by 40 to 50-mile-an-hour winds.
