Saco and Whitewater Track Teams Compete For First Time in 2023

The Whitewater and Saco track teams were the first to see action in the 2023 track and field season at the Cut Bank Pre-Easter Invitational last Thursday, April 6. A pair of Panthers also went to Miles City on Saturday, April 1.

Girls Meet

The Whitewater Lady Penguins scored the most points amongst the Whitewater and Saco Teams. The Lady Penguins took second place in the women's meet with a total of 50 points. Conrad won the women's meet with 71.33 points. Chinook was third with 45 points. Cascade was fourth with 35 points, Fort Benton was fifth with 34.33 points, Choteau was sixth with 32.83 points, and Saco and Cut Bank tied for seventh with 30 points respectively.

SACO LADY PANTHERS

Individually, Saco's Josie Brown scored the most points amongst PC athletes, sweeping the short relay events. She won the 400 with a new personal best of 1 minute, 4.27 seconds. She won the 200 with a time of 28.09 seconds, and the 100 with a time of 13.11 seconds.

Abby Yeska was 14th in discus with a throw of 62-8,19th in shot put with a throw of 23-8, and 52nd in javelin with a throw of 59-2.

Ireland Mears was 22nd in the 400 with a time of 1:16.63, 40th in the 200 with a time of 33.96, and 41st in the 100 with a time of 15.82.

WHITEWATER LADY PENGUINS

Shelbi LaBrie led the charge for the Lady Panthers setting a personal best and Whitewater School record of 12 minutes, 19.59 seconds in the 3200. LaBrie also won the 1600 with a time of 5:38.63. Her personal best is 5:22.37, a time set at state in 2022.

Labrie was also a part of the long relay team that took fourth place consisting of Kora LaBrie, Kendall Scheffelmear, and Paige Wasson. The team had a time of 4:42.17.

Wasson won the javelin event with a throw of 111 feet, six inches. She was ninth in triple jump with a length of 30-3.

Scheffelmear won the triple jump event with a mark of 32-2.5. She was also seventh in the 100 hurdles with a personal best of 18.83, and tenth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 55.93.

Samantha Wisher was fourth in the 1600 with a time of 6:21.96, and fourth in the 3200 with a time of 13:34.87.

The short relay team consisting of K. LaBrie, Wasson, Kennedy Simonson, and Scheffelmear placed seventh with a time of 56.48.

K. LaBrie was eighth in the 800 with a time of 3:00.45 and 19th in javelin with a throw of 73-8.

Ava Hanley was 11th in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 19.71. She was 19th in the 100 with a time of 14.97 and 19th in the 300 hurdles with a time of 1:01.67.

Simonson was seventh in triple jump with a mark at 30-9. She was also 13th in discus with a throw of 64-2 and 14th in the 800 with a time of 3:13.7. She was 38th in javelin with a throw of 66-3.

Sommer Green was 24th in shot put with a throw of 22-11 and 31st in discus with a throw of 53-0.

BOYS MEET

Out of the two Phillips County teams Saco was the only one that scored points. The Panthers had 15 points and placed 14th overall. The meet was won by Belt who had 132.33 points, Cascade was second with 44.75 points, Chinook was third with 44 points, Fairfield was fourth with 43 points, Conrad was fifth with 41 points, and Shelby was sixth with 28 Points.

SACO PANTHERS

Blaine Downing led the charge for Saco, and earned a first place finish in pole vault by clearing 11 feet, 5 inches. He was also ninth in triple jump with a personal best of 37-3 and tenth in javelin with a throw of 119-10.

Marshall Caves was third in pole vault after clearing 9-5. He had a time of 13.62 seconds in the 100 meter dash.

Carter Pippin had a throw of 19-11.5 in shot put and 40-2 in discus.

Though the Panthers also went to Miles City for the Miles City B/C Invite, Downing was the only athlete to place, winning the pole vault event after clearing 12-6, taking fourth place in javelin with a personal best of 120-6, and placing sixth in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.04 seconds.

WHITEWATER PENGUINS

The Penguins were led by Austin Hanley. He took 13th in the 110 hurdles with a time of 22.06 seconds. He was also 13th in the 300 hurdles with a time of 54.61, 29th in triple jump and 63rd in long jump. His marks were 32-1.5 and 14-1 respectively.

Korbyn Skubinna was 15th in pole vault after clearing a height of 7-5. He also had a time of 14.43 in the 100.

Tyler Scheffelmear was 38th in shot put with a throw of 31-10, 40th in javelin with a throw of 92-9, and 48th in discus with a throw of 76-2.
