Little heart big in love

Titus Wiederrick, young son of Frank and Alex Wiederrick, was in Billings and among those welcoming home the troops from Afghanistan. He was sporting a “Welcome Home Grandpa Rick (Miller)” sign.

Hold ‘im accountable

Junior Troy Manoukian recently completed a week as a page, sponsored by State Senator Mike Lang. True to family politics, which is efforts to resist the introduction of free-roaming buffalo, Manoukian asked Gov. Bullock his view on it and if they were introduced, who would be in charge, Fish, Wildlife, and Parks or the Department of Livestock?

And baby makes five

Great-great grandmother, Agnes Young, held the 5th generation addition to the family, Mason Keith, surrounded by grandmother, Crystal Lett, mom Shantel Lett Keith, and great-grandmother, Loretta Anderson.

Young leaders

In the State Championship game, the Malta Mustangs were led by Kendall Denham who was voted MVP for his second year in a row. His teammate Tucker Schye also made the First All-Tournament Team and Zach Handley was named to the Second All-Tournament Team.

Safe & sound

Dale Enerson was waiting with open arms to greet his granddaughter Cassie Enerson as she arrived home after serving in Afghanistan. The troops arrived in Billings, MT.

HOBY Youth

Thalia Medina, a sophomore at Malta, was selected as the Hugh O’Brien Leadership Seminar (HOBY) representative. Actor Hugh O’Brien, who played Wyatt Earp in the television series, established the leadership seminars in 1958 after being inspired during nine days as a volunteer working in South Africa with Dr. Albert Schweitzer, winner of the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize.

Kimber Kovack greeted her Daddy, Ryan, at the airport with a US flag upon his arrival home with the 484th Military Police from Afghanistan.

Well done!

Dodson Science Fair winners were James Beard, Keona Bear, Dominick Wagner and Mikey Jaynes. Their entries had been judged by Terri Cole, a community member, and Biologists Jessica Larson and Todd Boonstra.

Jazzy at State

Tyler Ost, who plays baritone sax, Jeremy Costin, who plays trumpet, and Carter Epperson, who plays alto sax, were selected through auditions for the All-Montana Jazz Band. They joined student musicians from all classes, primarily Class A and B, according to band instructor, Erik Engebretson.

Sing a joyful song

Madelyn Anderson has been singing as a member of the Malta Lutheran Church for the past 70 years. Now 88, she started singing back in 1940; she comes from a musical family, her mother, Mabel Flesche was a pianist who played for the choir for “many years.”

Young marketer

Bryce Olson, a major in Marketing at MSU-Billings, is interning the spring semester at Northwest Pipe Fitting in Billings, fulfilling degree requirements through the Cooperative Education Program. He is the son of Judy and Gaylord Olson of Malta.

Academic team to compete

The Malta Junior High Academic Team, coached by Andy Otteson, will compete at the Eastern Montana Academics program. Participating are Steven Green, Seth Taylor, Joanna Skiff, Shannon Brady, and Sally Bruce.

From flames to ashes

Only the charred ruins remain of the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Sandvick of Dodson. The home caught on fire at about 2:30 a.m. and the Sandvicks and two small children were able to escape the home.

Selected for Teams

Kirk Stiles, of Malta, and Nick Walker, of Plentywood, were selected to the 2B District All-State Conference Team. Jeremy Otteson and Bobber Rosendahl were named to the All-Conference Team.

Dennis Bebee has joined Missouri River Realty as a sales associate. Born and raised in Phillips County, he will specialize in farm, ranch, and commercial real estate.

Lead by example

Mike Carney, Steve Schumacher, and Paula Boland received awards from Boy Scout Troop 429. District Chairman Dave Miller said it is unusual for so many awards to go to Malta since there is only one Cub Scout and one Boy Scout troop in Malta.

Summer plans

The forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Frances Ann, is announced by Mr. and Mrs. Celius Severide, to Jack Motiska. Both are students at the Vo-Tech in Helena. A summer marriage is planned.

The Malta Mustangs battled their way to the consolation game in the Class B Divisional play over the weekend in Shelby but were defeated 64-52 to come in fourth in the tournament.

Student Named

Charlene Healy is the Student of the Month for Dodson for March. She is neat with her work and makes the effort to be a positive example in the classroom.

Prayers welcome

The fifth annual Mayor’s Prayer Luncheon will be held on March 10, 1973, at noon. The cost is $2 per person, and the Malta Lutheran Junior Choir will provide selections.

Elks Winner

Patti Sue Smith was announced as the winner in the girl’s division of the Elks scholarship contest. She was one of four seniors in high schools within the Glasgow Elks Lodge jurisdiction named winner in the scholarship contest.

Ready for another round

E. L. “Duke” Seel announced this week that he has filed for re-election to the office of mayor of Malta. He is the first candidate to officially announce his candidacy in the city election that will be held Tuesday, April 3.

Tell n’ teach

Timothy A. Taylor of Malta is one of 28 University of Montana student volunteers who will be explaining campus programs to high school students in their hometowns and elsewhere during spring vacation.

Young hearts to unite

Rev. and Mrs. Leonard Bergstrom extend an invitation to the wedding of their daughter Lynn Kaye to Edward Allen Daellenbach on Friday, March 16th at seven thirty in the evening. They will exchange vows at the Little White Church.

Mike Matthews, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vern Matthews, formerly of Malta, was featured in an article telling how he is working his way through college by trapping. He is a senior at MSU, majoring in fish and wildlife management.

Post recognized

Thomas P. Appelhans Post No. 65 of the American Legion at Dodson, is one of 57 Montana posts that has received the annual Americanism citation awarded by the national Americanism commission of the Legion for outstanding service last year.

Eagle Scout Honors

Glenn Mueller, Maurice Funk, Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Losleben, Hurley Wilson, Leslie Eskildsen, and Leonard Anderson all witnessed the ceremony at which Bill Losleben was awarded the Eagle Scout honor.

Hosting the boys

The Malta Standard Garage was host to the feed for the boys, Bill Losleben, Don Kerns, Delmar LaBrie, Jim Spartz, George Knudsen, Dwayne Simanton Don Hould, Ole Veseth, and Ward Genger.

Top students

Three 100’s were received in a recent test in Home Ec. II. The girls who received these were Delores Hartman, Lillian Grimsley, and Lila Kovach.

South Wagner School News: William French heads the honor roll for the fourth six weeks period, with Louise Waters, second, Thelma Plouffe, third, June Ereaux, fourth, and Eleanor Green fifth.

Veteran honored

About 75 members of the Malta Council of the Knights of Columbus attended high mass and communion last Sunday in a body. The mass was said for Tom Appelhans of Dodson who died in WWll. Mrs. John Appelhans, the Council’s Gold Star Mother, was the honored guest.

Judge Borton was in Malta for a special term of the district court. A calendar of 20 cases was to be tried.

Are you afraid to run?

Little interest was being shown in the coming city election. One candidate had filed, W. H. Chase, for alderman from the west side.

Studious students

High school honor roll students included Esther Edwards, Lochiel Edwards, Izetta Fergeson, Kenneth Liskum, Mary Marjerrison, Dorothy Seymore, and Violet Veseth.

Training for the big one!

Tom Gibbons and his trainer, Mike Collins, passed through Malta on their way to set up training quarters for the coming Dempsey-Gibbons heavyweight fight in Shelby in July.

Twenty cases of eggs were shipped in one day from the O. F. Habedank store in Bowdoin.

Top of the line

The Great Northern was to have eight handsome observation cars built for use on the “Overland Flyer”. The cars were to cost $12,000 each and be ready for the June travel peak.

Bearing seeds

W. H. Martin had traveled from North Dakota with a car of Speltz seed for local farmers.

Plain disgusting

The ranch home of Nick Schmitz was burglarized. The front door was smashed and the place was plundered. One valuable taken was a silver medal which had been awarded to Mr. Schmitz by Emperor William of Germany. Schmitz was an expert rifleman in the German army before coming to America.

Soon to be bump free

The streets of Malta were to be graded under the supervision of County Surveyor W. H. Mann.
