Inspiring young Monet or Picasso artists created in three categories of media at the Boys & Girls Club. Seven were selected to be sent to Regional Fine Art Exhibits as follows: (Mixed Media – ages 6-9) Alexis Baublitz, Honorable Mention, Aidan Kaasa, Grace Carman; (Pastel Watercolor) Tamra Dowell, Honorable Mention, Andreena Bock, Grace Carman; (Watercolor – ages 10-12) Justice Miller, Honorable Mention, Ryder Anderson, Alexus Parker; and (Multicolored Drawing ages 6-9) Kylee Nelson, Honorable Mention, Grace Carman, and Aidan Kaasa. The display is an exhibit, not a contest.
Over the weekend, the Malta Mustangs grabbed a couple of wins, beating Wolf Point, 57-28, Saturday and Glasgow, 59-40, on Thursday.
The skills, artwork, and talents of seamstress, Bessie LaBrie caught the judges eyes, and was added to the squares of other quilters for a U. S. Fish & Wildlife quilt contest. From Malta, it was sent to Denver for assembly and final quilting. While in storage in Denver, the building was destroyed by a fire. The group was asked if they would remake the squares and quilt. Malta’s Quilt Guild said yes, and recreated it, much to the surprise of many.
Malta Elementary enrollment was reported to be 215 students, according to Principal Tad Schye. This is up from the fall census of 208 earlier.
Raina and Parker Mortenson were congratulated by Milk River Co-op on winning jackets in the Payback by CHS Nutrition program. Raina received the Reserve Champion Lamb award at the County Fair, and Parker received the Grand Champion Breeding Sheep award.
Incumbents in county offices filing or intending to file for re-election include County Commissioner Carol Kienenberger, Sheriff Gene Peigneux, Clerk and Recorder Laurel Hines, and Justice of the Peace Gayle Stahl.
Eighth-grade students of Mr. Nick Oxarart participated in the American Mathematics Competition math test. School winners were Shayen Garfield, Sophia Stiles, Deandra Johannensen, and Grant O’Brien.
Coach Scott King announced it was time to leave football’s sidelines after 24 years. He stated, “The time is right,” and “having kids who work hard and love playing football…that’s what makes coaching easy.”
With a newfound confidence from beating the Harlem Wildcats JV team, the Dodson Lady Coyotes were looking forward to Turner and Scobey. Dodson found what was needed to click to win, 56-20.
Senator Mike Lang and his wife, Lorna, attended the swearing-in ceremony at the 63rd Montana legislative session He was one of 38 new representatives to the legislative body.
Malta’s M-ettes endured their first loss of the season, losing to the Havre Blue Ponies. Even with the loss, since the game was a non-conference game, they remain undefeated (5-0).
Paul Mortenson, a resident of the Dodson community, was appointed to serve as a Supervisor on the Phillips Conservation District. He fills the position made available following the resignation of Lanny Icenogle.

School officials agreed the new school building would not be ready to move into after an inspection by Swank Enterprises, the construction company. Countertops, lockers, appliances, and other supplies are being shipped in from as far as Florida.
Nine winners were determined in the Knights of Columbus Free Throw Shooting Championship. Winners in the girl’s division included: Age 10-Lyndie NeVille; 11-Desarae KillEagle; 12-Jolene Fuzesy; and 13-Katie Weber. The boys’ winners were: Age 10-Clayton KillEagle; 11-Steve Hopkins; 12-Shaun Carnahan; 13-West NeVille; and 14-Brian Kaluza. Brian Kaluza nailed a perfect 15-of-15.
Malta School Board of trustees were constantly meeting and trying to use $500,000 from the fire insurance litigation to help pay down the $6 million in bonds approved by the voters. Another big decision and issue was what going to happen to the old high school gym.
Bill and Marcella McEwen announced the engagement of their daughter, Janelle, to Phillip Ator. A July wedding is planned.
Eleven quilt entries challenged the viewers in the first annual People’s Choice Quilt Show for Magie TEW (Trade Exhibition for Women). The contest was held in Great Falls. Third place winner was Sharon Kindle, Malta, her embroidered peacock quilt won her $50.
Placing at the Choteau Classic wrestling match were Kris LaBrie as runner-up at 112 pounds; Ryan Salsbery, fourth at 189 pounds; and Jon Green was fourth at heavyweight.
Six members of Malstrom Air Force Base’s 341st Communication Squadron donated a weekend to help finish the computer wiring in the new school.
Malta Mustangs, playing on the home court of their biggest rival, Plentywood, a combination of extremely poor free throw shooting and poor decisions cost them the game, 76-71, on Friday. Malta got in foul trouble early in the game and totaled 27 fouls to Plentywood’s 18.
The Saco Panthers downed Lustre 69-56 Friday night in Saco, they suffered a loss Saturday to Frazer, 63-58.
The County Attorney Ed Amestoy, will again oppose the possible parole of one of the men involved in the so-called Loring murders. Along with a letter opposing the release from District Judge John McKeon, petitions with signatures opposing the parole circulated from various counties will be submitted. Ronald Worden is serving a 40-year term for his part in the murders of Ray and Dorothy Scheffelmaer and Doris Watkins in Nov. of 1978.
In the Penguin Dome, Whitewater came close to scoring a big upset but fell short to Hinsdale in a 41-38 loss.
Clay Murdock won the Whitewater Elementary Geography Bee, he is a sixth grader. He beat out Taylor Cascaden after a long series of tiebreaker questions.

A waitress noticed a fire at 6:40 a.m. at the Bair’s Truck Stop garage and café, while serving breakfast to the manager Don Wilkes, and told him. By the time the fire department got there, the building was about 45 percent destroyed. The fire was so hot and intense, employees and customers were unable to move anything, and the fire spread fast.
Hurley Wilson, longtime manager of the Montana Power Company, was honored at his retirement after 45 years with the company.
William Waters was installed as the worshipful master of the Malta Masonic Lodge.
Patti Sue Smith and Jim Molloy won first place in the girls and boys division in the district leadership contest sponsored by the Glasgow Elks club. Their entries went on to state where they both placed third.
On the mats against the Chester Coyotes, Malta wrestlers downed the Coyotes 21-12. Lew Tuma, Leo Barthelmess, and Nick Cebulski recorded wins before Steve Baeth lost his first match of the season in a hard-fought contest. Phil Bruckner recorded the only pin of the night.
Dale Smith was appointed as the justice of the peace by the county commissioners at their meeting on Monday. He replaces Norman Storbeck who resigned earlier this year.

Entries are rolling in for the second annual fiddler’s contest. The old-time dance will be held Saturday at the city hall. Last year’s winner, Ingmar Gjersing of Bowdoin will compete again with about six other fiddlers. The dance is being sponsored by the Military Order of the Cooties. Chris and His Old Timers will furnish the music.
Donald Goschke of Malta has reenlisted in the Marine Corps for a period of four years. He is a Marine veteran of WWll and prior to his enlistment, he was a member of the Cannon Company 163rd Infantry, Montana National Guard, Malta, Montana.
The Malta VFW basketball team lost a fast game at Harlem by a score of 49-45. Sonny Trottier of the Malta squad was high point man.
The Malta Auto Company announces their appointment as Sales Representative for REO “SPEEDWAGON”. Reo is one of the nation’s oldest and best-known trucks, noted for fast, low-cost truck transportation.

The Phillips County Settlement Association was organized by the Malta businessmen and representatives of the Great Northern railway. L. C. Edwards was elected president and H. G. Robinson and J. F. Kilduff were named as an organization committee. They had elected T. J. Larson as secretary. The purpose of the organization was to convince settlers that the Milk River irrigated lands were worth considering as homes and farms. A price of $25 per acre for unimproved irrigated land had been tentatively set.

Harry Vagg had purchased J. H. Johnson’s interest in the Saco store for $9,000. The editor of The Enterprise wondered why anyone with that much money wanted a store.
George Bradley, a local cowpuncher was sentenced to 30 days in the local clink for the theft of an overcoat from the Golden Rule.
