Sixteen Malta Jr High wrestlers competed in the Wolf Point Mixer on Thursday, December 8. Teams competing were Harlem, Malta, Circle, Glasgow, Wolf Point, Sidney and Poplar. Most wrestlers got two matches and their records are as follows: Braun Sims 1-1, Beau Merriman 1-1, Beckett Squires 2-0, Braxton Egger 1-1, Karsten Davis 0-2, Cameron Spencer 2-0, Gabe Oshio 1-1, Hayden Roberts 2-0, Corby Mears 1-0, Steeler Blunt 0-2, Lane Spencer 2-0, TJ Nelson 1-0, Kenan LaBrie 2-0, Tripp Lefdahl 1-1, Luke Simanton 1-1 and Kallie LaBrie 0-2. The quick pin for the week happened on Thursday, and for the 2nd week in a row, the Quick Pin Award goes to Beau Merriman with a 19 second pin. The Most Exciting Match for the week also happened on Thursday. Lane Spencer won 7-5 in overtime over Cody Kuka of Glasgow, where Lane had a 5-0 lead and Kuka came back to tie the score. Lane scored a takedown in overtime to win the match.
Thirteen Malta Jr High wrestlers competed in the Sidney Middle School Eagle Invitational on Saturday, December 10 and thirteen teams competed in the tourney. The teams competing were Glasgow, Miles City, Sidney, Circle, Malta, Poplar, Wolf Point, Harlem, Baker, Glendive and three teams from North Dakota, Watford City, Williston, and Dickinson.
Seven 5th graders competed in the tourney. Braun Sims went 1-2, winning and losing by decision and losing by pin. Braun received 3rd place, was 2-3 for the week and continues to improve. Beckett Squires was 3-0 for the tourney and received 1st place. Beckett pinned all his opponents in the tourney. Beckett went 5-0 for the week with five pins and receives the Wrestler of the Week Award. Karsten Davis was 0-3 for the tourney and 0-5 for the week. Karsten has moved up in the skill level due to his previous success and he is adjusting. Braxton Egger was 0-3 in the tourney and 1-4 for the week. Braxton had a lot of close matches and gives great effort. Cameron Spencer was 1-2 on the tourney and received 3rd place. Cameron lost two matches by pin and won by decision. Cameron was 3-2 on the week. Beau Merriman was 3rd place in the tourney, going 1-2. Beau lost two matches by pin and won a match by pin. Beau was 2-3 for the week. Kallie LaBrie competed in the Girls' Division and was 1-1 on Saturday, getting 2nd place. Kallie was 1-3 for the week but had a great performance in a match on Thursday where she showed a lot of grit by not getting pinned by a Poplar girl that had pinned her twice before.
Three 6th graders competed in the tourney. Gabe Oshio was 1-2 for the tourney and received 3rd place. Gabe won one match by pin and lost two matches by pin. Gabe was 2-3 for the week. Hayden Roberts jumped up a skill level due to his previous success and went 0-3 for the tourney. Hayden wrestled well even in his losses. Hayden was 2-3 for the week. Corby Mears was 0-3 for the tourney. Corby lost two matches by technical fall and one by pin. Corby was 1-3 for the week.
Two 7th graders competed at Sidney. Steeler Blunt also jumped up in skill level. Steeler went 1-2 in the tourney and received 3rd place. Steeler went 1-4 for the week. Lane Spencer was 3-0 for the tourney and 5-0 for the week. Lane received 1st place and along the way, wrestled Cody Kuka from Glasgow again and won by decision. Kuka has won the first three matches of the season and Lane has won the last three matches. Stay tuned next week to see who wins Game 7 or Match 7 as it is certain they will wrestle again because our last tournament is in Glasgow.
We only had one 8th grader compete and that was Kenan LaBrie. Kenan won two matches by pin and one match by decision, earning 1st place. In one of Kenan's matches that ended in a pin, he came from behind in the closing seconds and got the pin. Kenan was 5-0 for the week and is our only undefeated wrestler thus far. Kenan will share the Wrestler of the Week Award with Beckett Squires for the Wolf Point/ Sidney week.
