Yah…do fence me in

The Malta FFA Chapter met with the City Council and proposed updating the Trafton Arena. The estimated cost is $5,845 to $6,805.

Will we build?

Bill Hicks was re-elected to the Phillips County Hospital Board; Art Lundstrom was elected vice president and Patty Seeley was appointed secretary. Ken Wiederrick was welcomed as a new member. The hospital is considering constructing a new hospital adjacent to the nursing home.

It saved a life

In a recent near-drowning accident, the victim was treated and monitored using information from a computer supplied by Dr. Gladys Young and the hospital staff feels this type of information should be available at both the hospital and clinic, Administrator Larry Putnam told the hospital board.

It’s finally OVER…!

The court case between the Malta School District and insurance giant USF&G grinds on today as the high school and junior high school close down so teachers can testify about how they came up with the inventory figures. Phillips County Insurance and the school have reached an out-of-court settlement according to Malta Supt. Bill Parker.

You did the crime, now pay

Justice of the Peace Gayle Stahl plans to copy her big neighborhood courts and hold a “warrant roundup.” The court would supply the Phillips County News a list on Dec. 31 of every person who has failed to appear in Justice or City courts or has been found guilty and failed to make timely payments of fines levied by the court. These people know who they are, and the only way their names won’t be published is if they settle their account with the courts prior to Dec. 31st. Great Falls courts recently published four pages of names of individuals as part of their “warrant roundup.”

Out for a rematch

At their 7th-straight state tournament, Malta Coach Del Fried is looking to reverse the trend hopefully in the final rematch with the Scotties. The M-ettes had dropped final matches at district and divisional to Glasgow.

Those fouls hurt!

The Saco-Whitewater Lady Panthers had a good first quarter and a bad second half and learned something in the process in their 55-39 loss to Culbertson, according to Coach Amber Erickson. “We have to learn to play up the tempo without fouling,” said the Coach; “we fouled way too much and we had a couple of girls foul out.”

Thinking ahead

The Malta Mustangs brought the boys Class B state tournament trophy home to the trophy case last season. Which raises the inevitable question:

Is it encore time?

“We’d love to repeat and I think we have the potential, but it won’t be easy,” stated head Coach David Costin.

Someone turn the light out…

Saco was looking at being a ghost town for the weekend as the population was heading to Belgrade to support the girls basketball team in their first-ever trip to the State Class C Tournament. Supt. Larry Crowder said the school will use it as a learning opportunity and students will benefit from museum tours and field trips.

Crowder said the trip also causes new “situations” for school officials to deal with; the boys’ season has already started and the boys will need to practice in Bozeman, and this is the first time they have held girls basketball in December.

A 17-year-old juvenile being held in the Phillips County jail for a neighboring county, attempted to hang himself in the jail in the early morning hours on Saturday. He was rescued by another juvenile in the cell who awakened and discovered him. The boy was taken to the Malta hospital and this week was transferred to Warm Springs State Hospital for psychiatric examination.

So darn close…

Frosty my rear…it’s COLD out there!

Old Man Winter arrived Friday night, accompanied by nine inches of snow. On Thursday it was a balmy 51 degrees then thermometers plummeted to one degree below. The cold continued to Tuesday with a minus 39 degrees. The snow and extreme cold made streets slick and there were lots of vehicles that would not start.

And no one came

Frank E. Hayes died suddenly; he had been living at the Hales ranch, south of Saco. Funeral services were held at the Lutheran Church with Rev. K. N. Forde officiating. Singers were Mrs. Wm. Cosper, Mrs. Gerald Doty, and Mrs. Herman Palm. No relatives of the deceased were present.

A tragedy leaves orphans

Four separate findings, totaling $56,930.45, were filed in federal court in Great Falls, all findings based on suits brought by Sam Meyers of Malta. Sam is the guardian for Roger and Robert Green, and administrator of the estates of Mr. and Mrs. George Green. The findings were filed almost two years to the date on which George and Ethel Green were fatally injured and Roger and Robert were seriously injured in an automobile accident west of Malta.

A car driven by C. Merle Savage crashed into the Green car. Savage and his son and Mrs. Green were killed instantly; Mr. Green died the following day. The wreck left the eight Green children orphans.

Will they ever learn?

Leave ‘em in the dust

It was grand, larceny that is!

Harrison, attorney for Jeglum petitioned the court for a reduction of bail from $10,000 to $2,500 and Judge Vernon Hoven granted the petition.
