The Malta Junior High Wrestling Team traveled to Lewistown on Tuesday, November 15.
Seventeen wrestlers competed in the tournament. Most wrestlers had four people in their bracket, but there were a few with three and a couple of weights only had two wrestlers. The schools attending were Malta, Lewistown and two junior high schools from Billings, Lockwood and St. Francis.
Fifth and sixth graders competed in the B Pool. Colby Wright (65-66 lb) won his only match 13-0, taking 1st place. Braun Sims (76-83 lb) lost a match by pin and decision and won 2-0 in overtime. Braun took 3rd place. Beckett Squires (76-83 lb) took 4th place and lost all of his matches by decision.
Karsten Davis (79-85 lb) was impressive in winning all his matches by pin and taking 1st place. Braxton Egger (79-85 lb) won a match by pin and decision and lost a match by pin. Braxton took 2nd place. Cameron Spencer (85-95 lb) competed in his first tournament of the year and went undefeated winning a tight match 2-0 and winning two more by pin, taking first place. One of the matches was a :14 second pin, which earned him the Quick Pin Award.
Kallie LaBrie (98-105 lb) competed in the girls division. She lost by pin and won her second match 6-5 where she was ahead 6-0, got reversed and put on her back, then fought off her back for most of the 3rd period to win the match. Kallie took 2nd place. Hayden Roberts (98-103 lb) was impressive in pinning all of his opponents in the first period and taking 1st place. Hayden wrestled a total of 2:39 in three matches. Hayden's body position and pressure has been improving throughout the year. Hayden is the Lewistown Tournament Wrestler of the Week. Gabe Oshio (98-103 lb) lost three matches by pin and took 4th place. Beau Merriman (109-121 lb) won a match by pin and lost a tight match 5-2. Beau took 2nd place. Corby Mears (126-132 lb) lost two matches by pin and one match by decision. Corby took 4th place.
Seventh and eighth graders competed in the A Pool. Silas Young (98-108 lb) won his first match by pin and lost his next two matches by decision, earning 3rd place.
Lane Spencer (106-113 lb) lost his first match in overtime and won his next two matches, one by decision and one by pin. Lane receives the Most Exciting Match Award because of his performance in his last two matches compared to his first match. His coaches were very excited about how solid he wrestled in the last two matches. Lane took 2nd place. Steeler Blunt (120-130 lb) lost two matches by decision and one by pin. Steeler took 4th place. Tripp Lefdahl (132-136 lb) wrestled in his first tourney of the year, going 1-1. Tripp lost by pin and won by pin, taking 2nd place. Skylar Gilkerson (173-192 lb) also wrestled in his first tourney of the year. Skylar lost by pin and lost a tight match 3-1. Skylar took 3rd place. TJ Nelson (203-243 lb) lost a tight match 2-0 and took 2nd place.
