Malta Wrestling Club in N.D.

The Malta Wrestling Club traveled to Watford City, ND for a wrestling tournament for grades 5-8. Teams competing were Circle, Glasgow, Glendive, Malta, Poplar, Sidney, Wolf Point, Williston, ND, and Watford City, ND. Wrestlers were put in brackets of 4 according to weight and skill level. Each wrestler had three matches as they wrestled everyone in their bracket.

Beckett Squires pinned his first opponent and finished 3rd with a 1-2 record for the tournament. Karsten Davis had a record of 2-1 and was 2nd in his weight class. He had a great match where he was on his back for a long time, got off his back and won the match. Karsten won the Quick Pin Award with a pin in 32 seconds in his first match. Lucas Pewitt was 0-3 for the day and was 4th in his weight class. Gabe Oshio had a record of 0-3 but had a great first match that was really competitive. He received 4th Place. Beau Merriman had a record of 1-2 and finished 3rd. He received the Most Exciting Match Award for being behind on points, getting off his back and pinning his opponent. These wrestlers competed in the 6th grade division even though most of them are 5th graders.

The following wrestlers competed in the 7th & 8th-grade division: Silas Young was 1-2 for the day and received 3rd place in his weight class. Assistant Coach Trey Simanton commented that Silas showed significant improvement from last year. Steeler Blunt had a record of 2-1. Steeler had a great match where he was behind 2-0 and pinned his opponent in the 3rd period. Steeler and 2 other wrestlers in his bracket had a 2-1 record, all beating each other. Due to criteria, Steeler got 3rd place but wrestled a smart tourney. Tye Nelson was 2-1. He pinned his first 2 opponents in the first round and was winning his last match 8-0 going into the 3rd period. He was pinned and received 2nd place. Lane Spencer was the only Malta wrestler to go undefeated. He dominated all 3 opponents, pinning each one in the first period. Lane receives the Wrestler of the Week Award for the Watford City Tournament. The wrestlers will travel to Miles City on Saturday, November 5, for their next tournament.
