Thursday night, October 27th, the city of Malta kicks off the holiday season by hosting the fifth annual Oktoberfest. Malta’s banks and participating businesses will be open that evening till 8 p.m.
The Christmas scrip program is available at all three local banks; The First State Bank of Malta, Bank of Malta, and Independence Bank. The scrip program offers up to $1,000 in loans that are paid back in 10 monthly installments. This year, individuals can get scrip from October 27 through December 24. Phillips County residents invested $208,170 in scrip that was spent at local participating businesses.
That evening, Patty’s Floral is holding a pumpkin carving contest. Entrants need to have their pumpkins at Patty’s by 4:00 p.m. and can pick up their entries after judging before 8:00 p.m.
A Soup Cook-off contest gets underway at the Stockman Terrace at 5 p.m. Participants are asked to pre-register with Katie Smith, though last-minute calls are ok. There is a $10 entry fee and participants are asked to bring serving utensils, an extension cord, and a list of ingredients. Prizes of $200 and $100 will be given out for first and second places.
A Scarecrow Decorating Contest for the elementary grades will also be held at 5:00 p.m. on the terrace. A pizza party for the class will be awarded to the selected entry. A wreath decorating contest will be at the Terrace as well.
Blue Ridge Brewing will be on hand with trivia starting at 6:00 p.m. They will also have a couple of their brews on hand to try. A light beer, Beauchamp Blonde, and a dark one called Slippery Ann Stout.
The activities continue on Monday, October 31st, with the Halloween Parade sponsored by Independence Bank at 3:30 p.m. Participants are asked to meet at Veteran’s Memorial Park at 3:15 p.m. for trick-or-treat bags and goodies. Stop in downtown businesses and do some trick or treating as well.
On All Hallows Eve, Monday, October 31st, the Phillips County Health Clinic and Hospital are sponsoring a Trunk or Treat at the south parking lot of the high school from 5 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Those who are bringing goodies are to arrive by 4:30 and be ready for treaters by 5 pm. They are expecting around 350 kids.
There is a $50 award for the best-decorated car, trunk, or hatchback. It is a fun and safe way for kids to trick or treat in a lighted parking lot, and a great way for individuals to hand out candy to a large number of kids as well.
The high school volleyball team will be competing at the 2B District Tourney at Wolf Point on Friday and Saturday. The Malta Mustang high school football team will host at home on Saturday afternoon in the first round of the State Playoffs.
