One Nation, Under God

Have You Ever Tasted Stone Soup?

Come on down to the Malta Senior Center Saturday, October 22, and let your taste buds take you on an experience of yore. The free-will donations will go towards the awning over the front door.

Dolly Parton, whom many people enjoy listening to her songs, had Stone Soup as a staple in her diet. Growing up in Tennessee, Parton was one of several children, who fondly recalls her parents, Robert and Avie while living in the beautiful Tennessee mountains.

Avie Parton would have each of her children go in search a stone, scrub it clean, and bring the stone home. Avie chose the stone of the child who needed extra love that particular day and hence, Stone Soup began to bubble.

Ann McGovern, an author, tells of a folktale going back centuries. A hungry traveler convinced villagers he could create a delicious pot of soup with boiling water and a stone. Curious villagers came by bringing whatever they had, like a turnip, a potato, a carrot, just maybe a ham hock, and whatever else they could find. Soon there was a huge pot of simmering soup, enough to feed the villagers.

Friendship soup is along the same concept where one sits down to a scrumptious bowl of potage, especially tasty on a chilly day. Whether the Friendship Soup is made by one or more as the refrigerator(s) gets cleaned out, several people can be contributors. A bit of this and a handful of that, throw in some meat, and sit back as it simmers in whatever pot you chose.

Various soups will be on the menu along with breads and fall desserts.

Come join us Saturday, October 22, and enjoy a relaxing lunch.
