Commissioners Hold Mill Static
The County Commissioners gave approval of the budget for the 2012-2013 fiscal year. Commissioner Richard Dunbar said the county could face a “day of reckoning” five or six years down the road if prices of natural gas don’t rebound.

Despite penalties, the Mustangs were able to defeat the Cut Bank Wolves, 27-6, in a non-conference battle on Homecoming day.

Cross Country Busy Keeping Pace
Members of the Cross Country team, with Coach Natalie Parker, were pictured following a meet in Glendive. The members of the newly formed Cross Country Team were Sarah Faaborg, Julia Hammar, Cheryl Kaasa, Lindsey Webb, Katie Veseth, Jennifer Martin, Barb Waters, Bethany Atchley, Amber Diemert, Angie Roberts, and Stacy Solberg. The team placed third for Class B teams.
Youth at Work
Youth Probation Officer, Bob Michael, and Supervisor Teena Schorr reported the probation program for delinquent youth had served 777 hours in community service since April.
It’s In the Cards
In whist, Helen Water won high, Anna Slater, low; high to Norman Haugness, and low to Palmer Carlsrud. In pinochle high was won by Clara Veseth; low by Cliff Munson, traveling prize went to Jerry Hanson, and serving was “on the house.” In bridge, Margo Rush took first and Duane Compton was second. *Hang in there, Margo.

Billy and Darlene Froman had caught a 16-pound Northern Pike at Nelson, along with 10 and 12 pounders.

McKeon Recognized By Governor
Former Malta graduate, Jim McKeon, was one of 84 state employees who have received the prestigious Governor’s Award for Outstanding Performance. He works with the Dept. of Revenue in Helena and is the son of Willis and Laura McKeon.

Greg Oxarart, Mustang halfback, carried the mail for good yardage in the 16-0 win over the Choteau Bulldogs.
Verdict Not Guilty in Murder Case
A jury found Janice Werk, of Hays, not guilty of second degree murder, but guilty of voluntary manslaughter, in connection with the death of her 22-year-old husband, Charles Werk.

When Centenarians were honored across the nation, Malta’s own Bessie Helland, was among them.

Deposition Taken
Guessing it wasn’t a pleasant day; depositions were taken in a suit against John David, filed by Mike Denoma for medical bills in the amount of $500 and damages in the amount of $100,000. Mr. Denoma, of Saco, stated he was injured in an altercation over a fence.

Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hervol, former residents of Dodson, have purchased the Success Lunch from “Soapy”Anderson and have taken possession.
SHEEP SALE
The North Montana Sheep Sale will have 250 Rams and Ewes offered for sale, in Havre, MT.
GLASGOW TEAM WINS GAME
The Glasgow VFW baseball team took a lopsided game from the Malta Club by a score of 24-2. Pitcher Gene Seel received an injured finger, and Charles Frye, the manager substituted. R. McCollum wrenched a knee sliding into second base, and Dwayne Raymond was credited with one run. A few regular players played on Sunday, the lineup was recruited for the game.

County Agent H. L. Lantz advised farmers to pick their corn for the corn show, which was to be held in Malta on November 9, 10, and 11.
The Queen May Be From Phillips County
Miss Nora Stubblefield was elected “Miss Phillips County” and would attend the state fair at Helena. She would serve as a representative of the county, and a candidate for the title of “Queen of Montana”.

Frank W. Murray had taken over the editorship of the Malta Enterprise, replacing H. G. Smiley. However, Editor Murray was indisposed the first week, due to the high altitude, and C. E. Stevens, a former editor had taken over. Editor Stevens was a newspaperman of the “personal journalism” type, and an ardent republican. His story of the current democratic convention and choice of candidates made good reading. He listed the opposing candidates and made a brief statement. Commenting on one he said, “No other would take the job.” Of another, “Don’t like his ancestors.” Of another, “Can’t be trusted.” Of the candidate for coroner, he said, “He can’t tell a corpse when he sees one”.
