The North Country Mavericks picked up a pair of wins to start of their regular season.
The team defeated the Plentywood Wildcats 3-1 on Thursday, September 1, in Plentywood, and then defeated the Richey-Lambert Fusion 3-1 on Friday, September 2, in Saco.
The team is scheduled to travel to Bainville to face the Bulldogs on Friday, September 9, at 4 P.M. They will then have a double-header on Saturday, September 10; the first game is against the Savage Warriors in Hinsdale at 2:00. Right after the varsity game, the team will travel to Saco to face the Fairview Warriors.
The Mavericks will also take on the Malta M-ettes in Whitewater on Tuesday, September 13, at 5 P.M.
In the team's season opening win over Plentywood, the scores were: NC 25 P 27, NC 25 P 21, NC 25 P 20, NC 25 P 11.
"In the first set of the match, we were trying to get our flow going and get our switches down on offense and defense," Mavericks Head Coach Charlene Wasson said. "Plentywood is a very established program. They were placing the ball where they wanted to and making adjustments to get around our blocks."
The Mavericks were led by Teagan Erickson who had 10 kills and two blocks. Paige Wasson had six aces and 12 assists. Kendall Scheffelmear and Kora LaBrie each had seven digs. Mattea McColly had a team-leading four blocks.
"We made a few defensive adjustments that helped us pull ahead in the last three sets and finish there," Coach Wasson said. "This was a good first opener of the conference season for us."
In the Mavericks win over Richey-Lambert, the scores were NC 25 RL 17, NC 23 RL 25, NC 25 RL 23, NC 25 RL 20.
The Mavericks were winning handily and were up in the second set, until an unfortunate injury slowed down the team's progress.
"We were doing well in set two, up 19 to 12 when Mattea McColly sprained her ankle and it forced us to make some quick changes that took the momentum away for awhile," Coach Wasson said. "Then we got our groove back and finished the match out strong."
Erickson led the team with 18 kills and five aces. P. Wasson had 19 assists. Scheffelmear and LaBrie each had nine digs and BaiLee McColly had two blocks.
