One Nation, Under God
With the weekend that brings an end to summer, as most know it, the Labor Day weekend activities are well underway at Saco.
The town will gear up, open its gates, and welcome those from far and near, to the 59th Annual Saco Fun Days.
Chamber President Lacey Beil, stated she feels things are lining out and falling into place and it should be a good weekend.
“The Grand Marshall is voted on by the Chamber Members, and it is someone who has supported the events through its history; they are usually on horseback and carry the American Flag in the parade. I haven’t even told (him) that they voted him in, yet,” Lacey laughed.
So, you are hearing about it here in the PCN!
Ron Haynes, YOU are the 2022 Grand Marshall!
For those who don’t know, Ron is Lacey’s Dad. She said she wasn’t sure how he would take it, “I just know he won’t ride in a convertible car!”, she continued laughing.
The Fun Days start off with a potluck supper on Friday night at 6:30 PM in the City Shop, with Saco Pay ‘n Save providing the meat. The night will be spent at the Cornhole Tournament, which is held after a Calcutta, so bring your checkbook and plan to support the Saco Chamber and Agriculture and their benefit projects.
Things will be happening on the streets of Saco, as the Grand Marshall prepares for his main task, that of leading the parade of followers through the quaint little Class C town. Line up at 10:30 as Reigning Ron begins the gala event. There will be a free will BBQ following. Buttons will be drawn and a barrage of donated items will go home with someone. Those prizes include a 65-inch TV, a power washer, mosquito proof tent, a karaoke machine, and a river raft, just to name a few.
There are only 650 buttons sold and one does have to be there to win and claim their prize.
Kid's games are on tap for the afternoon and the Methodist church will be serving up pie. All weekend long Stoughie’s will be serving up liquid refreshments of various for those over 21, who so desire a little something to lift their spirits. AE Catering will be on hand all weekend long serving her special menus.
The first big rodeo will start the dust raising at the “County Line Arena”. A maximum of 8 teams of three, ages 12 and under will vie for the winnings in the Wild Pony Races. Local contenders from “The Craig” last weekend are entered with the hopes of doing well in their hometown. That team is Royce Strobe, Wit Ozark, and Bridger Brooks.
The Minnow Races will be opening the headgates for their swimming competition later in the afternoon. Prior to the running of the fine-finned friends, there will be a Calcutta on the contestants.
Polish your dancing shoes and get ready to cut the rug at the dance with live music provided by “Mountain Country Band”; a gathering of talents from Circle, Jordan, and Miles City areas.
Teams for the Softball Tournament on Sunday will be drawn before the game starts at Simpson Field and there will be a Horse Shoe Tournament with plenty of ringers at Miller Park.
As stated earlier in the reading, the Saco Chamber and Agriculture will be assisting others through donations to individuals. Proceeds from the Cornhole Calcutta will go to Brook Kindred, a young mom who was in an accident and had injuries. She has two young daughters.
The Calcutta proceeds from the Wild Pony Rodeo will be given to the Saco EMTs and Fire Department.
Donations toward the Minnow Race Calcutta will go toward expenses for Kyler Venable, grandson, and great-grandson of Jeanie Green and Sally Austin.
That should wrap up the weekend, folks. One couldn’t ask for much more from a town that a mere 159 call home. It is ranked below #1 Billings by a few, ranking 17,183rd largest city in the U.S.
Come celebrate the Labor Day Weekend in Saco, MT, the happeningest place in the County this weekend.
