Greater Montana Foundation Inductees
Greg Kielb, owner of KMMR, and renowned radio personality was inducted into the Society of Montana Broadcast Legends. Greg and Shirley Trang of Glasgow were two of 28 broadcasters inducted at a special awards luncheon.
Wildfire Burns Acres and Causes Injury
A wildfire scorched nearly 11,000 acres and sent a local man to The University of Utah Burn Center. David O’Neil, of Malta, was transferred as a result of receiving first and second-degree burns on his legs, arms, hands, and back on 18% of his body.
Bohn’s Bones Art Gallery Opens
Kathy McMahon and Donny Bagley were opening a new art gallery. The art gallery will be doing framing as well.
Celebrates 50 Years
Maynard and Mary (Bahn) celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They renewed their vows and had a private dinner. Maynard’s parents were among the special guests.
Law Enforcement Beefs It Up
Sheriff Scott Moran stated the local PCSO will be adding extra deputies for the Labor Day Weekend.
Appointments to Law Enforcement Board
Mayor Shyla Jones appointed four locals to serve on a Law Enforcement Study Board. Appointed were Dale Enerson, Don Nevrivy, Doreen Dale, and Willie Hammar.
King Heads Into 23rd Season
Coach Scott King, opening the 2012 season in high hopes of being in the playoffs at the end of the season, prepared for the opening game against Huntley Project. In his 23rd season at the helm of the Mustangs, King stated, “I guess we’re optimistic. We’re looking for the opportunity to play November football.”

484th Display at Park
Photos of the 484th Military Police Company, which are currently deployed to Afghanistan, are displayed on the bulletin board at the west end of Veterans Memorial Park.
EMT Visit School
Phillips County EMT’s Milena Anderson, Terri Robinson and Gina Lamb visited Malta Elementary School during their annual safety visit to the school.
Mine News Isn’t All Doom
Expansion at the Pegasus Mine at Zortman, was being delayed until funding was available. According to Manager Kevin Ryan, Pegasus simply does not have the funding to start up a new project at this time. The mine employs about 80 workers in the summer time, and a skeleton crew of 30 in the winter months.
Judge Rules State Board Acted Properly
Judge Ted Lympus, of Kalispell, ruled the Board of Funeral Services acted properly in revoking the mortician license of Kenneth Ulrich. Ulrich had voluntarily surrendered his insurance license after being charged with eight forgery counts and six theft counts.
Hospital Yard Sale
The sixth annual hospital yard sale at the local hospital brought in $1,191, and the committee members were still gathering prizes and donations for the live and silent auction.
Barthelmess Reunion
At their fourth family reunion, 78 members of the Barthelmess gathered for the first time in 11 years. Saturday activities included touring the ranch, a quilting bee, horseback riding, golf, a slide show and square dance.
Little White Church Celebrates 100th Birthday
Having the distinction of being the oldest church in our community, the Little White Church will celebrate its 100 anniversary in 1998.
Son Born to French’s
Steeler William French joined brothers, Cody and Jake, weighing 9# 4oz.; he is the son of Steve and Jennifer French of Choteau, and the grandson of Malta residents, Bill and Corky French, and great-grandson of Cora French.
Youth Rodeo Winners
Winners of the Whitewater Youth Rodeo were: Jesse Simonson, Lacey Dee Haynes, Kayla Messerly, Andrea Hammond, Buckshot Nelson, Amanda Stenvik, Desiree Taylor, Becky Montgomery, Wes Salveson, Jett Anderson, and Tessa Olsen. Coyotes Headed By New Coach
Katy Hould, who has coached Dodson’s junior high team for four years, was an assistant high school coach for one year, is the new head coach for the high school girls. She is a former graduate of Dodson, and will be assisted by Kori Pray. Players will be senior, Kelly Cole, juniors Jennifer Reynolds, Lindsey Kirkaldie, Nicole Hawley and Sarah Marney; sophomores Francine KillEagle, Jessica Wilson, Lourdes Fox and Carly Wyse. Freshman players include Liz Anderson, Stacie Kline, Jaci Hawley, and Tracie Overberg.
9-under 63 Wins It
Kirk Fuzesy, Terry Stiles, Kelly Murray and Carl Totman shot a 9-under par 63 to win the Sixth Annual Pegasus/First State Bank Invitational Golf Scramble at Marian Hills Golf Course. Taking second were Craig Stiles, Dave Skiff, Pat Murray and Sandy Jones.

Jody Menge and Mark Zuidema blended their culinary talent and creativity in opening The Big Dome in Saco.
Maxie Completes Training
James R. Maxie, a 1994 graduate of Malta, completed ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) in Fort Knox, Ken. The cadets received training in basic rifle marksmanship, drill and ceremonies, small arm tactics, and communications.
Graduate of 1915 To Be Honored
Lillie Davidson McConnel, the only surviving member of the three-girl graduating class of 1915, Malta High School’s first commencement, will be the honored guest at the reunion of MHS classes from 1915 through 1932. She is also the oldest living person in the city of Malta who was born in Malta.

Young Man Rolls Farm Truck
A farm truck, driven by Timothy Bullard, 19, of Malta, hit a soft shoulder and went off the county road, rolling onto its top. Bullard sustained minor injuries in the mishap; the truck was owned by Lee Robinson and received extensive damage.
Nordlund Installed Worthy Matron of O.E.S.
Kathryn Nordlund was installed as Worthy Matron of the Sacajawea Chapter, Order of Eastern Star and Carl Eaton was installed as Worthy Patron.
BYU Degree
Janis Sue Kaufman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Kaufman, was one of 1823 students to receive a degree at Brigham Young University in Provo, UT., at summer commencement.
Puppets Make Appearance at Nursing Home
Several Jayceens and their children visited the Malta Nursing Home last week. Introduced by Mrs. Garry Adams, were young Paul Buffington, and Michelle Huber. They entertained Mrs. Francis Elliott and Mrs. Theresa Schwenke, with their frog puppets, Freddy and Frieda.
Senior Citizen Host Newlywed Party
A festive occasion marked the gathering at the Senior Citizen Center as they honored four couples that had been married since the club was organized three years ago. Orpha McEwen baked a large cake honoring the “newlywed” couples, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Shores, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Espeth, Mr. and Mrs. Harold McBride and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sanderson.

Chickens Perish In Fire
A hundred and fifty chickens were burned to death in the destruction of a 20x50 poultry house at the P.J. Minehal place on the south end of town. Lightning was believed to be the cause.
Chinook Man Drowned in Reservoir
The body of Jessie Rush, 56, was recovered by Sheriff’s officers. He stood up to cast his fishing line and lost his balance and the boat capsized. Dave Cline, who was fishing with him, clung to the boat and with one hand gripping his fly rod, cast his line ashore where it was caught by a fisherman and he was pulled to shore.
Gros Ventres and Assiniboine Dedicate War Memorial
Gros Ventres and Assiniboine Indians of the Fort Belknap reservation gathered to dedicate a memorial to more than 50 young men who died in the service during World War II. The memorial is a huge boulder from the Snake Butte quarry, upon which a plaque bearing the names were placed.

The primary election held showed Mrs. Florence Kerr Facey had been nominated as republican candidate for state legislature, winning over Dudley Jones of Dodson. John Russell was candidate for sheriff; Harry Mason, county commissioner; Dave Dutro, county treasurer; F.L. Robinson, county assessor; Arthur Brine, superintendent of schools; B.P. Sandlie, county attorney; Norman Hicks, surveyor; R.V. Tucket; coroner; and A.S. Hanscom, public administrator. Democratic candidates include Mrs. W.W. Hamilton, of Dodson for state representative; Charles Wolfe, sheriff; A.E. Watson, treasurer; C.O. Sherdahl, commissioner; Roy Lee, assessor; V.E. Misner, county superintendent and H.L. Wolfe, Jr., county attorney.

Republicans Choose Delegates
Malta republicans had met at Trafton Hall and selected nine delegates and nine alternates to attend a county central committee in Glasgow where state delegates and alternates would be elected. Delegates were A. Davidson, A. Elliott, P.A. Clark, H.G. Robinson, G.L. Partridge, W.H. Richardson, C.P. Snellman, C.M. Powell and James Tweedie, with the following alternates: L.C. Edwards. R.V. Tucker, John Tressler, G.M. Clay, James Wilson, Thomas Henderson W.H. Garland, Charles Jones and R.W. Garland.
Democrats Hold Election
State delegates elected and the west end of the county would be represented by L.M. Guthrie, P.H. Caselberg, John Thompson, D.C. Kye, Harry Cosner, and C.E. Broadbrooks.
Little News To Be Shared
There was very little news in the 43 ago issue as the editor had filled considerable space fuming over the way Glasgow would probably treat Malta at the republican central committee meeting.
Golden Rule Store
There was to be a grand fall opening at the Golden Rule Store. J.F. Kildruff was advertising men’s negligee shirts as bargains. Trafton and McGregor were selling summer shirt-waist shirts and the Malta Mercantile was pushing the sale of hay machinery.
