Fund-Raiser Turns 20 Years Old

The annual Health Care fund-raiser is 20 years old. Businessman Ken Wiederrick assisted Cliff Rustad with the efforts; the fundraiser was started when Rustad suffered a near-fatal death following a heart attack.

Coffee Club Honors Its Own

Willis McKeon and Keith Stine were honored at the Malta Coffee Club, both gents are in their 90s. Both were WWII veterans.

Bergos in World Finals

Kaden Bergos placed first in the Junior Dragstrip Summit Super Series, making him eligible for the World Finals competition to be held in Memphis, TN.

It Was One Hail of a Season

Mayor Shyla said the City would reduce building permit costs as a result of an alarming number of applications being submitted. A total of 86 permits to re-shingle had been issued through July, compared to 61 for all of 2011. Much work was a result of a June 2011 hailstorm which dropped golf ball-sized hail in the area. Landfill manager, Bob Kapp, stated 400 tons of shingles, tar paper, and other shingling materials have been hauled to the landfill this hear.

Montana Volunteer of the Year

Good Samaritan Chaplain, Fr. Jim Thistle, was named the Montana Adult Volunteer of the Year. He adapted his days at the Retirement Home by taking “a little siesta” after lunch every day.

Five and Running Strong

You know you’re a young team when your two returning veterans, are pair of sophomores. Two veterans of the Malta Cross Country team include sophomores, Josie LaFond and Rebecca Smith, who will lead the team of five this season.

Five Generations Gather

The five generations of the Sylvia Ohs family gathered for pictures. The generations include Sylvia, Katelyn Grimes, Kyle Grimes, Delores Stebbines, and Duane Grimes.

Class of 1953 Gathers

Members of the Malta Class of 1953 gathered for lunch. Attending were: Bonnie Millar, Joan Christofferson, Dick Caves, Carolyn Caves, Lynn Contway, and Norma Kelly. Paul Snyder, Artt Christofferson, Jay Contway, Ted Kelly, Gus Korb, Mary Smith, Delores Ohs Stebbins, Jackie Olson, Anna Faye Simms, Ruth Flansaas, Shirley Tribby, Caroline Kron Caves, Allie Ereaux and Carol Coffman Lewis enjoyed the gathering as well.

Local Bookworm Recognized

Bailey Skones read more books than any other student in Phillips County for the summer. She had read 165 books. She was recognized by Phillips County Librarian, Janeen Brookie.

4B’s (Branding, Beer, BBQ & Bootshine)

A “Branding Party” would be part of the Mustangs 2nd Annual celebration hosted by the Mustang Lanes, Bar and Restaurant. Gather in the parking lot for 25-cent draft beer, a free BBQ, and FREE Bootshine (not to be confused with Moonshine).

Wright & Jaynes Brothers Bump ‘n Run

At the AMX Bump ‘n’ Run in Lewistown, Mark Wright, driving Joe Crowder’s car, came home a winner having placed 3rd. Rob Jaynes landed in 2nd spot; Russell Jaynes was unable to place due to a crash. Their brother, Scott Jaynes, captured 3rd in the A-Main. Former Malta resident Marcee Corbell ended up taking home the 1st place trophy and check from the Powder Puff competition.

Gone to the Dogs

The “Dog Days of Summer” contest, with the infamous “Doc” Curtis as Master of Ceremonies saw Cindi Hungerford (Gizmo) taking first for the Smallest Dog; and Lee Ann Pekovitch (Dewey) and Kaydee Fronk (Sassy) tied for 2nd. The Hard Luck award went to Raelynn Howard (Bear); Jon Simanton (Sprite) won Reserve Grand Champion and Grand Champion was awarded to Allison Merwin (Chase).

Left Them in the Dust with His Duster

Malta Drag Racer, John Carnahan, in his ’73 Plymouth Duster, beat 62 entrants to claim the Pro Class title in Calgary, AB, Canada. He received the prestigious “Wally Award”, honoring excellence in the sport of drag racing.

M-Ettes Come Back Strong

Shaylee Bebee, a senior at Malta, was pictured practicing for the upcoming season; there are 22 players out for basketball this year.

Local Man Dies Following Lengthy Illness

Francis Schwartz, 57, died on August 23rd. He is survived by his wife and four sons and three daughters, his mother, a brother, and a sister.

Young Man Dies Following Shooting

Charles Werk, 22, of Hays, died of gunshot wounds. According to tribal police, Werk was shot in his home, and his wife is being held in connection with the shooting. Survivors include his wife, Janice, a son, his mother, 10 brothers, three sisters, his grandfather, and his grandmother.

Dodson Coyotes Ready to Open and Teach

Dodson School would open on Sept. 3, and football would be reinstated under Coach Garfield Munson. Teachers are Pearl Armstrong, Lila Boos, Helen Ness, and Mrs. Nicholson. Other teachers would include Mr. Swatek, Mr. Munson, and Mr. Scott. The noon lunch cost has been set at fifteen cents per pupil.

Occasionally, this correspondent receives a bawling out with the icy glare for leaving something out of this column which we knew nothing about. We want the news. If it’s good clean news, we want it, we want all of it. Of course, if your neighbor’s husband ran away with a neighbor’s wife, we don’t want that. We live here. But, if your neighbor’s wife had a baby, give us the Who, What, Where, When, and Why, and we will see that the cute little fellow gets the works. Help us put Landusky at the top.

Tatnall Goings On

Howard Hammond, who has been at the Alvin Olson home for the past two weeks, went to Kremlin on Friday, returning on Saturday evening, accompanied by Mrs. Hammond and little son.

Milton Olson returned from Detroit, Mich., on Friday with a new truck and car.

VFW Purchases Equipment for Little Rocky Camp

The purchase of a 10 kW light plant for installation at the recreation camp near Landusky was decided upon at the regular meeting of the Buster Deo Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars on Wednesday. The camp, a former CCC Camp, was presented to the local VFW post by Mr. and Mrs. B.J. Phillips of Landusky, to be used as a recreational center.

Strike Caused By Fatal Shooting

Work halted in GN shops in Wolf Point and Havre by a strike. A brakeman had been killed at Havre by an armed guard and the Railroad Brothers were asking the removal of all armed guards on the system.

Fair on Schedule

Fair Board President Edgar Lee announced the fair is coming along fine for the annual fair on Sept. 13-15.

Final Licks Before Elections

Candidates were getting in their final licks in preparation for the primaries of August 29. F.C. Gabriel was the only county man a candidate for state office. He was a Republican.

Sneaking Horses Out of the County

John Ullom was arrested at Wagner and placed under $1,500 bonds for attempting to move mortgaged horses out of the county.

Malta will be hosting the Montana potato show on Nov, 9, 10, and 11.

Out With the Old, Make Room for the New

Prime steers were selling on the Chicago market for $4.50 per hundredweight. “It doesn’t pay to hold over five and six-year-old steers and let them eat the grass that should be turned over to three and four-old stuff. We are replacing our old stock with younger animals”, said one Bear Paw Pool owners.

Bring Your Smiles Along & Come On Down

A traveling photographer had set up his tent in town and would remain as long as he did a paying business.

Range Horses Shipped

A.E. Peck had purchased range horses from E. Smith and Si Gamble. He paid $60 a head for the animals which were to be shipped to the Dakotas.
