484th Military Police Receive Packages From Home

Local members of the 484th MP Company should feel a little closer to home in Afghanistan, as care packages from home arrived, compliments of the local Phillips County CattleWomen. The packages contained beef (sticks), a disposable camera, gummy bears, Krispie bars, a bar of soap, thank you note and a picture.

DePuydt Earns Award with 4.0 GPA

Saco graduate Annie DePuydt, was one of 140 students across the conference named to the inaugural award list of Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC). DePuydt was one of 11 student-athletes to boast a perfect 4.0-grade point average. She plays for the MSU-Billings Yellowjackets.

Dirt Daubers Teach Boys & Girls Club

Local members of the Dirt Daubers showed up at the local Boys & Girls Club to teach them how to prepare entries for the fair. Assisting were Kathleen Lumsden, Sharon Miller, and Jane Ereaux.

Gas Takes a Hike

Gasoline was reported to have risen 7.4 cents per gallon locally, compared to 5.4 cents per gallon nationwide. The price is now at $3.67 per gallon.

Local Miss Wins Award

Local participant in the Distinguished Women Academic Program, Johanna Nagy, received the Spirit Award at the State competition in Shelby.

Dedication At Museum Honors Pioneers

There will be a dedication of a plaque commemorating pioneers of Phillips County and the Williamson and Sandvig in particular at the Phillips County Museum. Ora Williamson Alcorn, a 92-year-old former teacher, was hoping to organize a national “Pioneer Day.” Obi Sandvig still lives on the homestead after 79 years.

Pugh Attends Conference

Malta High School science teacher Darlene Pugh was attending a workshop In Minnesota. Pugh reported there were nearly 200 workshops to choose from. “There seemed to be a workshop on every aspect of chemistry teaching and demonstration one could imagine.”

Diplomas Awarded…52 Years Late

Alice Phillips and Jackie Wilke got a surprise in May when they finally got to graduate from high school, along with the 1997 Dodson Senior Class. In 1945, the boys in their school class got called off to serve in WWII, leaving the two girls the only ones in their senior class. Supt. Dolly Ann Wilcutt was one of the individuals who were instrumental in making it all happen.

New EMT Volunteers Welcomed

Thirty-eight newly trained EMT volunteers were welcomed by instructors Dennis Raymond and Charlene lamb at a picnic. Among those completing the training were Travis and Laura Lamb, Rick Hotaling, Tim Novotny, Merrimae Solberg, Becky Green, Rick Pederson, Sharon Shultz, Darrel Schultz, Paula Veseth, and Ric Lamb.

Local Mayoral Race is Only Contest in Upcoming Election

Incumbent Mayor Byron Ereaux is the only candidate with any opposition during the City of Malta Primary coming up. Ereaux will face Vincent Schmoeckel in the Primary Election. Both are candidates on the Republican ballot.

A new exotic cattle marketing organization formed recently in Glasgow and the new group plans to have a sale of exotic females in Glasgow. The name of the new group is Big Sky New Breeds Association. On the 11-man board of directors are Ike Blatter, Carl Fahlgren, John Yeska, Tom Fisher, John Barton, Lawrence Robertson, Dave Closes, Lawrence Schipp, Francis Henning, Richard Fuhrman, and Floyd Nelson, Jr.

Locals Head To Olympic Games

Mr. and Mrs. William Cotter, granddaughter, Lori Ereaux, and Pam Larcombe left for Europe where they plan to attend the Olympic Games.

Winning ribbons for various sheep showings were: Showmanship-Wayne Jacobs, Whitewater; Class V Sheep – Purebred Suffolk Ewe Lambs: (Blue) James Schumacher, Louise Waters, Wagner; (Red) Marion Waters; Purebred Suffolk Ram Lambs (Blue) James Schumacher; (Red) Marion Waters, Louise Waters; Grade Hampshire Ewe Lambs (Blue) Frank Hartsock, Wagner.

4-H Judging Contest Winners Named

In the 4-H Home Economics Club Judging Contest first place was awarded to Dorothy Slaymaker (Saco); 2nd Pamela Garrison (Saco); and 3rd: Caroline Kron (Malta).

Homemade Games: Blue Ribbons: Bud Mavencamp, Whitewater; Monte Mavencamp, Whitewater; Al Wiese, Whitewater; and Kenneth Berg, Whitewater.

Red Ribbons: Betty Murdock, James Murdock, and Janet Austin, all of Whitewater.

South Wagner News

The South Wagner booth won second prize at Phillips County Fair. Mrs. Lester Hartsock was in charge of the booth.

Kalle Kangas, Rangvold Lee, and Jack Korsbeck were out to Content for several days riding for cattle. Only one of the five head missing was found.

Local Man Dies At Home

W.A. McPhee. Well-known resident of Malta and Phillips County for the past 30 years, died at his home in Malta Tuesday evening. Apparently in good health during the day, he had succumbed while members of the family were absent.

Little Rockies Horses Capture Honors

Four of six entries finishing the Sage Brush Derby were Phillips County horses and riders. The time of 1 hour, 12 minutes, and 48 seconds made Leroy Longknife of Zortman, winning the three hundred dollar first prize in the 23.7 miles horse race from Chinook to Havre. Four of the six horses which finished are from the Little Rockies. Longknife from Zortman, Dave Kirkaldie from Lodge Pole, winning the two hundred dollars second prize, and Walter Duvall and Royal Ness of Landusky tied by mutual agreement for fourth and fifth place, getting their entrance fee of twenty-five dollars.

Robinson To Play In First East-West Shrine Game

Lee Robinson, selected to play for the East in the East-West Shrine Game, pulled out of Malta early Thursday morning in his plane to begin practice for the 10-day workout.

Bud Hasler and Lou Perry, wagon ramrods, announced there’s going to be a couple getting hitched up at this year’s third annual wagon, although they were reactant to reveal the names of the upcoming newlyweds.

New Teachers Hired

Schools were to open on Sept. 5, and among new teachers hired for the year were Miss Celia Skorpin (Mrs. Fred Robinson), Mrs. Seth Dibble, Miss Ruth Andreason (Mrs. C.E. Snyder), Mrs. M.T. Weikle, and Mrs. Gertrude Rathbone.

Candidates File

Seventy-four candidates had filed nominating petitions for the 10 county offices. The primary election was to be held on August 29. The office of sheriff was most sought after with nine candidates for that position seven Republicans and two Democrats.

Veteran Buried

Ward Hovey, a veteran of World War 1, was buried in the Malta Cemetery with Military honors conducted by the American Legion Post.

Exams Free

A free medical and dental clinic for all county school children was announced by Mrs. Isabelle Burley, county superintendent.

Tresslers Make Purchase

Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Tressler had gone to Minneapolis where they had purchased a new 666 Paige car. They plan to drive it home.

Double funeral services were held for Anna Doores, eight-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L.A. Doores, and Howard, four-month-old son of Mr. and Mrs. E.S. Sperry.

New Pastor in Town

Rev. William Snape was the new pastor of the Malta Methodist (Little White) Church.

Looking Sharp

The band boys had new photographs taken. They were their new pretty uniforms and made a pretty picture.

Sheepherder Returns From Chicago

Ole Veseth had returned from Chicago where he accompanied a shipment of sheep.
