Sorenson wins 2022 Phillips County Fair Demo Derby

The 2022 PC Fair was electric last Saturday Night as the Crash for Cash Championship featured plenty of smacks from welded cars in a short but satisfying finale that saw a new champion, Tim Sorenson of Williston, N.D.

"For having only eight cars, I say that it went pretty good, but the main event was the fastest that I have ever seen," said Scott Skoyen, the coordinator of the PC Demo Derby. "For what we had to deal with; not having grandstands, I thought that we did okay."

Right at the start of the championship, drivers went for Havre's Garrett Powell, who has found plenty of success in the Phillips County Fair over the past years.

Powell was top dog in the Calcutta auction, going for $1,100. Tim Sorenson, the winner, was an underdog heading into the championship, and was bought in the Calcutta for $125, the lowest bid. Cody Arnold was the second highest and was sold for $600. Donovon Sorenson was sold for $525. Jake Brown was bought for $275 and Garrison Mitchell was bought for $175.

Sorenson was asked about his win.

"I just had to stay out of trouble," Sorenson said. "I've had second place and third but this is my first win."

Cody Arnold was the second place finisher and Garrison Mitchell finished third. Sorenson was also the Mad Dog Trophy Winner.

"I wasn't paying attention and didn't know that I had won yet,"

At one point, Sorenson was pinned in the side of the arena by Mitchell. Sorenson was asked how he got out of trouble and was able to turn the tide of the round.

"Just power," Sorenson said. "It just worked out."

He and his 1975 Chevy Impala had been through four derby events.

"It's got a 360 under the hood," he said. "It's nothing special."
