One Nation, Under God
A dedicated crew of five was assisted by volunteers to once again host a successful fundraiser.
EMS Coordinator Rhei Tharp was absent from the familiar faces, fully confident things were in good hands. Grill master, Vince Mace, kept up with the steady and constant crowd, while volunteer Lori Abrahamson (retired), and fellow EMS William Hofer did the prep stages of getting the delicious burgers ready for plates, cheese and fried onions. Morgan Ellis, EMR and EMT Janessa Malmend served up coleslaw and hot dogs. EMR Marcus Woods was kept busy with kitchen and supply duties. Volunteers Ally Hofer, niece of William, and daughters Hayli and Chloe were serving coffee and lemonade.
Over 200 supporters of the EMS showed up with their support for the event, and no one went away hungry, despite the crew running out of onions and coleslaw. Rhei stated that the 2 hour event raised over $2000, and the EMS is very appreciative of the community support.
Rhei stated that while there are 17 on the roster for EMT services, this number includes Saco and Hinsdale and there are actually three Malta EMT – Vince, Janessa and himself. Recently Rhei joined a task force with Gov. Greg Gianforte to raise awareness of the need for EMT services. It is a dying service – and it is dying because of the lack of individuals who are willing to volunteer.
Recently, Rhei personally utilized the EMS services when he was flown out to Billings because of health issues.
He stated, "and I hear I wasn't a very nice (or cooperative) patient."
Back to work now, Rhei echoed the importance of both volunteerism and family time.
The opportunity to give to the community awaits you – stop by the Court House and visit Rhei and find out how you can help. The service is in need of volunteers before your family calls in need of an EMT and no one is available.
