Lightning fire efforts aided by nature

South Phillips County ranchers were assisted by Mother Nature that caused various fires in the area; neighbors, the fire department and rain helped extinguish the fires.

Local resident wins $50 gas card

Sharon Kindle, a local resident, won a $50 gas card from Tanks of Thanks for her volunteer work and lending a hand in various community organizations

Vandals hit walking trail

Wanton vandalism is costing the Malta Trails Inc. money the same time it is trying to raise money to create a network of walking trails around Malta; vandalism destroyed a dog station, three signs, and five nesting boxes donated by Bowdoin National Wildlife personnel along the walking trail on the flood dike in Trafton Park. Vandals even started a fire in the middle of the trail.

Saco Fire Chiefs honored

Retiring Saco Fire Chief Richard Barnard passed his badge on to incoming Fire Chief Richard Suddeth while incoming Deputy Fire Chief Eugene Salveson was handed the badge and uniform shirt from Darrell Gairrett, retiring. The community held a BBQ in honor of the retirees’ service.

Peacher celebrates 80th

Pearl Peacher was honored at the GN on her 80th birthday. “Retirement? I don’t know what that is.”

Crop tours held around county

County Extension Agent Kent Williams discussed the strength of various varieties of winter wheat grown in test plots in the area. One stop was at the farms of Sid and Harold Solberg of Dodson. Along Highway 2 the tour visited the Ken White farm and would end at Howard Smith’s on the 24th.

B.D. Phillips’ grandson visits

Glen Phillips, grandson of the man the county was named after (B.D. Phillips), visited friends in the area. Glen and wife, Marilyn, visited a classmate of his, Tom Taylor and wife Alyce. They were joined by Mary Ann Dooner for dinner.

Martina McBride at County Fair

Country western singer and entertainer Martina McBride would be the night show at the Phillips County Fair in Dodson.

July 27, 1972

Seventy six girls competed in the 4-H Dress Review, where Laura Nordlund won first place, followed by Marilyn Golik, and Jackie Daellenbach in the Senior Division. First place Junior division was won by Roxanne Jacobson, Nancy Ruud placed second and Pamela Tribby was third.

Kitty Wells star of the Night Show

Country queen of hearts, Kitty Wells, would be joined by Johnny Wright, Bill Phillips and Wayne Manning and his “Tennessee Mountain Boys” as headliner for the Phillips County Fair.

Nels Boe County Agent Reports

Equine Encephalomyelitis, commonly known as sleeping sickness, was hitting the area. Livestock owners were urged to vaccinate horses, ponies, and mules against the deadly virus..

Coroner’s Jury gives verdict on hanging

A coroner’s inquest was called by County Coroner, Garry Adams, at the request of County Attorney, Willis McKeon, in the death of Albert Vermandel who was found dead in the city jail about three hours after he was jailed on a drunk and disorderly charge. The verdict found that Vermandel came to death on July 8 at the city jail “by placing his belt around his own neck and tying the opposite end to the bedstead of the upper bunk and hanging”.

Members of the jury were James Farstad, Harvey Fladland, Claude Ereaux, Leslie Eskildsen, Carl Fahlgren and B.J. Goodheart.

Local youth in Boots and Saddles

Twenty six youth winning honors at the Boots and Saddles include: Larry Ross Simpson, Joel Hegar, Launa Beto, Loren Beto, Jim Orahood, Lori Orahood, Lori Smith and Audie Simpson. Also winning were Wade Jones, Lance Beto, Sherry Green, Kathleen Murdock, Zelda Murdock, Sandra Olson, Twila Olson, Lexie Murdock, Patti Oxarart, Brenda Murdock, Barbara Robinson, Diana Robinson, Nancy Olsen, Terry Williamson, Dusty Emond, Debbie Baker, Clint Simpson and Lynne Orahood.

Charter Members of the Newly Organized National Guard

Charter members of the Cannon Company, 163rd combat team of the newly organized National Guard unit were pictured with the Adjutant General’s inspecting party. Locals pictured were M/Sgt. Peter Majewski, an enlisted instructor; Lt. Gordon Peters, Lt. Col. J. Russell Larcombe, former Malta unit Commander, Capt. Howard McCandless, Cannon Company Commander and Clarence Mikkelson, acting First Sergeant.

Also shown were Homer Blevins, Art Schlieve, Jr., George Hoover, James Pancake, Clifford Lundstrom, Rex Kaufman, George R. Hoynes, Glenn A. Flom, E.L. Humphreys and Arthur Fortin.

Decapitated Body Found on G.N. Tracks Near Bowdoin

The decapitated body of 47 year old Carl Grizzly, was found along the Great Northern tracks about three miles west of Bowdoin Tuesday morning by section workers.

Coroner Wilford Bell believes the man may have fallen from a train and been run over some time during the night. Relatives were located in Georgia and the body will be sent to Winter, Ga., for burial. Papers of the body indicated that the man had worked on railroad section gangs prior to May. He was a veteran of World War II.

Child Is Rescued from Burning Home at KRM Ranch

Gary (known to his friends as Punky, the seven months old son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Ruggles, employee of the KRM Ranch at Phillips, was rescued unharmed from his crib in the house which burned to the ground last Friday noon.

The baby was asleep in his crib near a window when the fire started in the kitchen. His mother was out of the house at the time. By the time the fire was discovered it was impossible to enter by the door. A window was broken and the child lifted from his bed.

Have Famous Brother

Don Black, brother of William and Gale Black of Dodson, brought fame to the family when he pitched the no-run, no-hit game played at Cleveland July 10, between the Cleveland Indians and the Philadelphia Athletics of the American League. Black, pitching for the Indians, made one of the baseball highlights of the year. He is well known in the Dodson community as he spent some time there several years ago. He is the youngest of nine Black brothers.

War Starts Against Grasshoppers

A new campaign is being started in the county to control grasshoppers, the number being sufficient to damage seed alfalfa fields. Controlling grasshoppers can be done quite effectively by using the newly developed herbicide known as 1068, or by the general trade name of Chlordane dust, according to County Agent H.M. Oefstos.

100 years ago-1922

Members of the National Editorial association were traveling through the northwest by special train. Malta was one of the stopping places scheduled. Plans were made for a royal welcome for the newspaper men. L.C. Edwards, J.F. Kilduff and John Survant were named to a special committee to board the special at Chinook and ride to Malta with the newspapermen. Free copies of the Enterprise were to be distributed.

Harry Lyden was appointed to the Malta school to replace H.M. Kirton, who resigned.

I.D. O’Donnell, Great Northern agent, predicted that sugar beets would pay well in the Milk River valley.

Scott Leavitt, republican candidate for congress, spent a day with the voters in Bowdoin.

About 40 former Nebraskans enjoyed a reunion and picnic at the Levi Osler home in the Whitewater community. The entire party attended church at the Huntley School. Rev. Miller, one of the guests, preached.

A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Emil Lundstrom.

118 years ago-1904

Trafton and McGregor had completed construction of a big dry shed which was to be used to store lumber.

The North Montana Editorial association had been invited to meet at Malta on August 27. A big entertainment was planned and anyone caught “shooting up” the visitors was to be handled by the vigilance committee.

A shooting scrape occurred at Rocky Point and a man by the name of Frank Barrett was badly wounded. The story was that a group of cowboys and Indians were playing poker and enjoying liquid refreshments when an argument came up. Barrett pulled a gun and ordered the Indians to throw in their chips and throw up their hands. A buck by the name of Billy Brown objected and took a shot at Barrett, striking him in the lung. Barrett was still alive at the time of writing and Billy Brown was in jail.
