76 cyclists to reach Malta Sunday on Coast to Coast trip; Game set
Seventy-six tired bicyclists will arrive in Malta sometime Sunday afternoon after completing another leg on the Coast to Coast Bicycle Classic.
The cyclists left Seattle on June 16 and will end their 3,450-mile trip Aug. 2 at Asbury Park, NJ.
They’ll leave Havre early Sunday morning to complete the 90-mile day-long leg of the trip to Malta where they’ll spend the evening in tents at a local campground.
Participants in the classic have to pay $3,500 to join the group or they have the option of paying a $300 registration fee but must raise at least $7,000 for the charity of their choice.
Malta has been lauded as the “best stop” on the cross-country tour because of past receptions the cyclists have gotten from the local Chamber of Commerce.
A softball game between cyclists and local chamber memebers is held each time the group visits. This year’s game will get underway at 6 p.m. at Trafton Park.

City Council Fields Many Complaints from Malta Residents
A number of complaints were aired at the city council meeting Monday evening by the councilmen.
It was noted that groups of bicyclists, motorcyclists, and drivers of cars frequently stop in city streets to converse, blocking traffic. The problem of noise and litter from teenagers’ cars parking at night in the Buttrey parking lot is getting worse, creating a nuisance to neighboring residents. Also mentioned was that speeding cars are still a hazard in Malta.
There is also a problem with the restrooms in the city park being misused. Built for the convenience of the public, they are becoming a place for pranks, mischief, and vandalism. The council instructed police chief Ralph Young to lock the restrooms in the city park each night from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. to curb misuse.
Billings Man Hangs Self In Malta City Jail Cell
A Billings man, Albert Vermandel, 56, took his own life by hanging in the Malta city jail last Saturday evening.
Bob Perez, a Malta policeman, discovered Vermandel’s body when he looked into the jail at 9:45 p.m. It was determined he had been dead about an hour and a half.
Vermandel had been jailed on a drunk and disorderly charge at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
He apparently fastened his own belt to a board on the top bunk and then rolled off the bed.
Vermandel was in Malta to attend the high school rodeo. His son was participating in the rodeo.

Pigeon Failed To Make Homing Trip
One more of our illusions has been shattered to bits. We always understood that among the uncertainties of this world, one thing stood out as true – that homing pigeons always came home. No matter how many miles their little wings might beat out, we thought they would show up at the home nest sooner or later.
But, comes Peter Foss of Saco with the information that a homing pigeon with band No. 7955.1F.46G attached to his right leg showed up at his place some time ago and has no intention of going home as far as he can gather.
We still don’t think the pigeon has lost his way. Maybe he just liked the looks of the Foss place. Maybe his home life wasn’t what it should be. Maybe the air traffic has been too heavy hereabouts. Maybe he is suffering from amnesia and has forgotten that he is a homing pigeon.

- Elam Threlfall, south of Saco rancher, was shot and killed by Emil Lucht, deputy sheriff while resisting arrest. The trouble started over a horse Threlfall had borrowed from a neighbor. When the neighbor asked for the return of the horse, Threlfall shot it. Lucht was called and the man became angry, resisting all efforts of the deputy to bring him to Saco.
- The Fourth of July celebration at the Hog ranch wound up in a “big drunk and a free for all.”
- George Kemper had sold the Malta Light and Power company to W.F. Raus and T.R. Raus of California.
- The entire county was hit by a terrific wind storm that broke windows, blew down buildings and signs, and by a hail storm that ruined crops in an area six miles wide by 30 miles long. The most severe hail damage was reported in a path from North Dodson to Content. A man was knocked unconscious by hail near Phillips. Car tops were blown off and many persons who were spending the day away from home were stranded overnight.

- “It was great!” was the verdict of the biggest crowd ever seen on the streets of Malta following the town’s first official Fourth of July celebration. In the racing program, Malcolm Taylor won second place in two one-half-mile races. “Snow Ball,” John Survant’s dark horse, won the 100-yard dash for boys and Warren Sowers caught the greased pig. The judges were completely helpless when faced with a group of proud mamas and divided the money which was to have gone to the handsomest baby. Emma Trafton received an ovation when she read the “Declaration of Independence.” Malta won the baseball game played between the town and the boys of the Geological Survey by a 10 to 4 score. The shearers won the tug-of-war. Everyone had a fine time. No fights were reported and Malta had decided to celebrate in 1905.
- Jackson Trask was arrested and fined $51 for carrying concealed weapons. The Enterprise editor said, “We believe there are those in Malta who make a practice of carrying a gun every day who should be given a dose of the same medicine.”
