Hometown girl makes good as teacher
It’s an old expression, but it holds true in this case.
Born and raised in Malta, Mary Lundstrom graduated after studying at Carroll College in Helena and MSU Northern-Havre, with a degree in elementary education.
“I always knew I was going to college and education fit me. I like kids,” she said. “I’ve always liked my job.”
Four years after graduating from Malta High School, she married Art Lundstrom and worked with him part-time at the family’s furniture store in Malta.
“Teaching school worked well with having a business and a family,” she said.
Her son lives in Helena with his family and her daughter and family live in Malta. Mary’s first teaching job was in Chinook, in 1972, where she became that town’s first kindergarten teacher.
Years later she taught at St. Mary’s School in Malta and moved on to Malta Elementary School in 1987.
“I’ve taught every grade K-6, except first grade. Watching students using new skills on an everyday basis makes it all worth it,” she said. “Oftentimes the talents I notice work into their occupations later in life.”
Mary looks back on the past 28 years with pleasure and satisfaction.
“I’ve always enjoyed the children and working with my coworkers,” she said. “Everybody has skills and success stories they’re willing to share.”
M-ettes capture state golf title
The Malta M-ette golf squad placed four team members in the top 15 places to win the State Class B Girls Golf title last Wednesday on the Eaglerock Golf Course.
The M-ette squad finished five strokes ahead of second-place Missoula Loyola.
“It was Malta’s first-ever state championship in either girls or boys,” said Coach Lynne Nevrivy. “The boys have finished second and third but that was before my time.
Senior Lauren Buechler was the top placer for Malta, finishing 8th with an 86-80-166.
Kori Kindle finished 9th with a 171; McKenna Levesque was 11th with 176, and Paige Heikens was 14th with a 179.
Teammate Sadie Stiles shot a 236 to round out the team scoring.
“We came together as a team,” Coach Nevrivy praised.

Principal wants to add two more sports to list
The principal at Malta High School is recommending that the school board consider authorizing the addition of two more extracurricular sports.
Principal Kelly Taylor told the board last week there is interest among some boys at the high school for the creation of a boy’s golf team. A girl’s golf team already exists.
Some girls are also interested in seeing a girls cross country team added.
The principal said girl’s softball was actually the number one choice behind existing sports at the school but has some drawbacks which would make it costly to implement.
The nearest teams to compete against are in Cut Bank, Billings, and Great Falls, Taylor told the PCN. Whereas schools such as Glasgow, Havre, Lewistown, Wolf Point, and Poplar already have girl’s cross country teams.
The principal conducts an annual survey among students to determine interest in various extracurricular activities and based his suggestion to the board on the results of the survey.
Drug sniffing dogs could be deterrent
A local principal thinks random checks by trained drug-sniffing dogs could help keep drugs out of local schools.
High School Principal Kelly Taylor made the suggestion to the school board last week during his administrative report.
Specifically, Taylor said the district might consider using the services of a California firm known as the K-9 Detective Service.
“I think we would be naïve to think we don’t have some of this stuff in our school system,” he said.
Taylor said the California firm, working at another school in northern Montana, turned up 29 students with the drug known as “crank” in their lockers.

Stiles Will Try Out For Olympics
Craig Stiles, a former Malta Mustang athlete, is one of four University of Montana trackmen headed for the U. S. Olympic team tryouts in Eugene, Oregon.
Stiles and Mike Lyngstad of Columbia Falls, both javelin throwers, are among the nation’s top 24 and therefore are eligible to compete in the trials.
Stiles finished seventh in the NCAA finals in Oregon last weekend. His best effort has been 255’10”. Lyngstad competed for the Grizzlies in 1968 and threw 261’8” as a member of the U.S. Army team.
Residents Asked to Cooperate with Garbage
Mowing of alleys is in progress in Malta. Street crews are finding piles of grass, trash, and limbs in alleys, making it difficult to do a thorough job of mowing, according to the city clerk.
Residents are asked to put their lawn clippings and trash in bags or boxes and place it at their garbage racks where the garbage truck will pick them up.

City Council Discusses Improvements
Members of the city council, meeting in regular session Tuesday evening, discussed at some length the proposed water and sewage districts in the south end of town. When completed in that part of town, city water and sewage facilities will be available within the city limits on the entire south side.
The improvement districts, two sewer, and one water district have been created and the city has called for plans and specifications on the job. Bids will probably be received this summer.

- Editor H.A. Johnson was called on the carpet for his campaign against local bootlegging and gambling. While visiting the courthouse in a newsgathering capacity, the editor was served with a subpoena for questioning about local conditions. He was unable to give any firsthand information about either gambling or bootlegging but told officers he had counted seven drunks on the streets as he walked up to the courthouse.
- The Phillips County Oil and Gas Company has spudded in a well on the Bowdoin structure and hopes were high that here at last would be a producing well.
- The Ku Klux Klan had moved into Glasgow. The town was plastered with posters and a masked delegation had visited the Deaconess hospital and presented the superintendent with a sum of money to be used to the “best advantage.”
- Dr. E.M. Burke had opened offices in the Malta National Bank building.
- Six students graduated from Saco High School. They were Frances and Dorothy Garrison, Vera Erickson, Gerald Doty, June West, and Ruth Hunter.

- The community was saddened by the death of Bert Stowe, well known young cowboy employed by Seymour Dane. Stowe was riding a bucking horse when it fell over backward and pinned him under the saddle. He was buried in the new cemetery in Malta.
- Kid Traylor, arrested in Culbertson by sheriff’s deputies, was handed over to Sheriff Cosner at Glasgow. The Kid had been freed from the county jail the previous fall by a gang of fellow horse thieves. But as pay for his release he had been delegated to all the kitchen drudgery in the gang’s hangout. He admitted he was glad to be in jail again as he was in need of rest.
- School closed with the announcement that new faces would be seen in the coming year. Many regrets were expressed as the public “was used to the old faces.”
- Considerable violence was noted in neighboring towns. Two sheepherders shot it out at Harlem with the result that one was killed and a marshal at Havre was fatally wounded while attempting to arrest a man.
