Malta and Dodson election result…

Malta voters approved all three levy resolutions Tuesday in the Malta School election.

Voters gave strong support (524 For 374 Against) to a $73,314 general fund budget resolution which will be used to purchase activity buses for the district.

They also voted to increase a Technology Depreciation Fund by $30,000 annually.

A third resolution, which will raise $32,000 a year for a building reserve fund for five years to help pay to fix a roofing problem also passed.

In the trustee race, incumbent Mark Knudsen was reelected and newcomer Carter Clausen will join the board.

A total of 890 ballots were cast out of 1,975 registered voters.

In Dodson, three incumbents were elected to the Dodson School Board Tuesday from among four candidates. Joe Nicholson, Mitch Scheffelmaer, and Alberta Fox were reelected.

Malta board votes 4-1 to close Tallow Creek

After tabling a motion to close the Tallow Creek School at two prior meetings, Malta School Board trustees voted 4-1 last week to end the ordeal and close the rural school.

Only trustee Fritz Prellwitz voted against the motion.

The vote came after a petition bearing about 70 signatures supporting keeping the school open was submitted to trustees.

The school would have had two students next fall—one of whom actually lives in another school district.

The parents of the two students have the option of homeschooling them.

Trustee John Meisdalen, who made the original motion to close the school, pointed out that the district’s budget is up against the cap set by legislation, and hiring a teacher for Tallow Creek, even a part-time one to teach a compressed schedule, would require cuts elsewhere in the district.

M-ettes second at Lewistown; preparing for District meet

Malta’s M-ette track squad finished a distant second to Colstrip last Saturday at the Fergus Invitational Track meet in Lewistown, but came in higher than teams such as Billings Central and Havre.

The Mustangs finished seventh as a team with 35 points.

For the M-ettes, freshman Mariah Guilfoyle claimed two gold medals and two silvers to lead the way. She won both the 100 and 300 hurdle races, setting a school record in the longer race, and took second in the 100 dash and the 400 relay.

For the Mustangs, Kirk Stiles won a pair of silver medals in the high jump and the javelin.

New doctor joins local medical staff

Hospital Administrator Larry Putnam announced Tuesday that Dr. Gladys Young, a Board-Certified family practice physician, signed a contract to provide continuous part-time physician services to Phillips County Medical Center and Family Health Clinic.

Putnam said, “We’re very pleased to have Dr. Young join Dr. Terry Jones, Physician Assistant Patrick Armstrong, and Nurse Practitioner Bev O’Doherty as medical providers for Phillips County. Her joining the medical team in Phillips County will allow us to provide medical services to an increasing number of patients at the clinic, in the hospital, and in the home health program. The Board, medical staff, and employees welcome her to our local medical system.”

Dr. Young has been providing locum tenens to Malta’s medical facility since February. After growing up in the Texas panhandle, she said she wasn’t keen to come to eastern Montana. But after meeting the people, she changed her mind.

“The people here made the difference. They are really nice,” she said. “I’ve enjoyed working here so much. I can always go to the mountains when I’m not working.”

Chevrolet Seeking Oldest Truck

If anyone in Phillips County owns an early model Chevrolet truck still in operating condition, he may win a new vehicle with it, according to the Malta Standard Garage. The Chevrolet factory is searching for the oldest licensed truck in service today and will present its owner with any standard model truck he may choose, in exchange for the oldest vehicle.

The competition covers the United States and owners with a truck likely to qualify are asked to register the information with the Malta concern. The search ends on June 15.

- Montana’s Nonpartisan League met in Great Falls and decided not to put up a state ticket at the fall election unless the party enrolled at least 20,000 members by primary time in August.

- Malta was host to a special trainload of Great Northern Railway officials and Twin Cities big shots, here to attend a meeting dealing with valley irrigation matters. Local landowners were dissatisfied with the lack of speed in completing the Milk River project, were complaining about the excessive cost of construction, and were asking for railroad assistance in getting a new deal from the government.

- Dr. Cabbage and Louis Skala were busy rounding up funds in Malta and Saco to test Bowdoin Dome for oil. They had secured a small drilling outfit and had spotted their first try across the Milk River north of Ashfield. The paper said they were getting good financial responses in both towns.

- H. Caselberg, J.F. Murray, B.W. Brockway, L.M. Guthrie, Lewis J. Smith, John Hardin, Al Haley, and J.F. Kilduff were at Glasgow to attend a meeting of county democrats. Messrs. Caselberg and Brockway emerged as delegates to the state convention at Great Falls.

- William Jaycox of Hinsdale was among the Malta visitors of the week. Also here were Mr. and Mrs. S.W. Tressler of Curlan, Iowa, parents of Attorney John A. Tressler.

- Kid Curry was in the news again as a Harlem newspaper published him as having returned to his former haunts around Landusky. The Enterprise editor printed the report but didn’t take much stock in it.

- A feature writer of the day was viewing with considerable alarm a report from London that women were beginning to demand divided skirts and were riding horses astride. The writer doubted that divided skirts were practical, and furthermore, he said that riding astride was not considered either safe, practicable, or moral.

- In any event, the horse business in this county was looking up, with James Thornhill of Landusky buying a $725 imported stallion from Oscar Johnson. The animal had been brought from England two years previously.
