Tallow Creek closing back before the board

The Malta School Board will meet in a special session tonight (May 2) to consider a motion to close the Tallow Creek School.

The school board currently has a motion before it to close the last rural school in south Phillips County, but has tabled it twice to gather additional information.

Supt. Kris Kuehn told the PCN the current school board has been dealing with the issue for several years and he feels they should have the opportunity to act before the May 8 school election potentially changes the composition of the school board.

M-ette golfers get team title; boys second

The Malta M-ette golf squad took first place at the Shepherd Golf Meet on April 26 with four team members finishing third through sixth in the top 10 finishers.

The Mustang golf squad placed second as a team with two golfers in the top 10 finishers.

“Our girls are coming together as a team and putting together some good scores,” said Coach Lynne Nevrivy. “We hope that continues through Divisionals on May 7 in Shelby. We want to make a good showing there.”

Lauren Buechler led the M-ettes with an 85 to place third. Teammates Paige Heikens and Kori Kindle both shot 86 scores, but Heiken won a chip-off to claim fourth place, while Kindle finished fifth.

McKenna Levesque shot an 87 score to place sixth.

Medalist honors among the girls went to Hannah Walter of Huntley Project with an 82.

Malta Mustang Teaguean Knudsen was the top finisher for the team with 76 to take second place among the boys.

Teammate Joe Rappold shot an 81 score to tie for seventh place with three other golfers.

“Some of our boys are struggling right now and just need to relax and have some fun,” Coach Nevrivy said. “They are putting some undue stress on themselves. It will all come together if they just let it happen.”

Dodson superintendent plans to retire in July

The Dodson School District has started the search for a new superintendent.

Supt. Bill Taylor announced at the district’s April 11 board meeting that he plans to retire when his contract concludes on July 1.

Taylor has served as superintendent for the past two years, succeeding Supt. Nellie Sherman, who retired.

Taylor, who has a total of 27 years of experience in education, said he plans to “explore some other interests…while I’ve still got my health.”

“I don’t plan for you to hear my name as superintendent in another system,” he added.

Taylor’s tenure in education includes stints as principal in Arlee and Harlem for 10 years and as a teacher in Polson. He taught carpentry, drafting, and woodworking for 14 years.

New airport underway

Construction has begun this week on the new Malta Airport, just west of town, north of Hwy 2.

Plans are to build a 4500’ x 75’ runway, with a tiedown apron 300’ x 400’, with a medium intensity runway lighting system, beacon, wind cone, segmented circle, and visual descent aid. Boundary fencing and an access road will also be part of the federally shared portion of the project. The runway will be asphalt and will be built up above the level of the surrounding terrain.

The total cost of the project is $2,308,258.00, with $2,051,404.00 being picked up by the Federal Aeronautics Administration, and $256,854.00 as local share, in a 90/10 match. The FAA will fund its portion of the costs over two years.

Cleanup Week Proclaimed By Mayor

Elsewhere in the week’s news is a proclamation by Mayor Roy G. Monroe designating May 11-17 as the annual Spring cleanup period for the city.

Pointing out that there is plenty of room for this improvement, Mayor Monroe urges everyone to cooperate to make Malta a cleaner place. We may never be the largest Montana city, he says, but with a little effort, we can be one of the cleanest.

The trash from residences should be placed in containers in the alleys and will be removed by the city truck. Collections in the business section will not be otherwise than normal and each business place is expected to dispose of its own trash.

Mustangs Defeat Saco 12-11 As Junior Ball Season Opens

Trailing by 5 runs in the last of the seventh, the Malta High Mustangs opened up in their Monday night game against the Saco Panthers and knocked out a 12 to 11 victory. The 7-inning season opener was played in Malta’s south park.

Veseth started the big Mustang inning with a single, T. Simanton sent him home with his second three-bagger of the day. Spartz came through with a single to send Simanton home and Trottier doubled. D. Simanton sent Spartz and Trottier home with another solid double and the Malta club had the tying run on second.

Sherlock and Anderson both worked the Panther hurler for a walk and the bases were loaded with no outs. Long struck out on three pitched balls and Hould came to bat as the Malta club had batted around. Hould laced a long drive into right field that Munson bobbled on an attempted shoestring catch and D. Simanton came home with the tying run.

Seconds later, the Saco infield trapped Hould between first and second, and as he ran out of the trap, Sherlock stole home with the winning run.
