Class C Schools at Whitewater Meet

The Dodson, Saco, and Whitewater track teams each competed at Johnson Memorial Field at the Whitewater Invitational Meet last Thursday, April 21.

This season, the Whitewater Invitational was officially recognized by the MHSA due to newly purchased timing equipment that was set up. The meet also gave the athletes a chance to compete for the first time since the Glasgow Invitational on April 1.

"I was super glad the kids got to have a meet again," Whitewater Head Coach Charlene Wasson said. "After a 20-day break between. It seems like forever but the weather didn't help us out much."

The meet featured nine teams, which included Class A's Havre Track Team, as well as Class B's Malta Track Team.

"I believe even with the wind, the meet was good," Coach Wasson said. "I don't know that I've had too many no windy days as a track coach the last 15 years. We will take what we can get these days. I felt like the kids were ready to compete and maybe the conditions were not the best, but they certainly weren't the worst."

Havre won the girls' meet with 172 points, Malta was second with 122, Whitewater was third with 91 points, Saco was fourth with 84 points, Hinsdale was fifth with 22 points, Nashua was sixth with 14 points, Turner was seventh with seven, Hays Lodge Pole was eighth with one point, and Dodson did not score.

In the boys' meet, Havre had 168 points. Malta had 151 points. Lustre Christian was third with 54 points, Saco was fourth with 34 points, Frazer was fifth with 26, Turner was sixth with 24 points, Nashua was seventh with eight points, Hays Lodge Pole was eighth with three points, and Dodson was ninth with one point.

WHITEWATER PENGUINS

The Whitewater girls were led by the strength of their distance runners. Junior Samantha Wisher won the 3200 with a time of 13:23.46. Sophomore Paige Wasson won the 400 with a time of 1:13.31. Freshman Shelbi Labrie won the 1600 with a time of 6:02.06.

The PCN caught up with Wisher after she ran the 3200.

"It's not exactly what I wanted, but it's not always about what you want," Wisher said. "I really wanted to beat the Whitewater High School track meet record time but it didn't work out."

Her target time was 12:54, which would have been a new personal and track record, but nature did not help. Wisher was asked how it felt to host a home meet.

"The wind really makes it harder to run but other than that it feels great," Wisher said.

Wisher also took second in the 1600 with a time of 6:32.53.

In addition to her win in the 400, Wasson took second place in javelin with a throw of 106-1, and sixth in triple jump with a mark left at 27-5.

She won her heat in the 300 hurdles and was asked how it felt to cross the line before her immediate opponents.

"It feels great considering it's my last Whitewater meet," Hanley said. "I thought this one would get canceled because of snow or wind, but thankfully we still have it."

As far as goals go for Hanley, she hopes to three-step her hurdles all the way through and get under 47 seconds in the 300 hurdles.

The long relay consisting of Kora LaBrie, Scheffelmear, S. LaBrie, and Wasson took second place with a time of 4:58.86.

Brown hopes to get under 13 seconds in the 100, under 28 for the 200, and under 1:01 in the 400.

Brown nearly crossed the finish line first as a part of Saco's short relay team. The short relay consisted of Ireland Mears, T. Erickson, J. Erickson, and Brown. The team finished second with a time of 56.97 seconds. Havre won with a time of 56.74.
