The Malta High School Golf Teams got their first action of the season last Friday, April 8, in Shelby.
“Our golfers had a great first tournament,” said Malta Head Golf Coach Kate Webb. “I was so proud of them for how they played. Especially with not much practice on the course or putting time.”
The M-ettes took first place among the three teams that had a full squad for scoring with a +151 score. Conrad came in second with a score of +178, and Fairfield took third with a +180. Choteau, Glasgow, and Shelby had golfers there, but not enough to score for a full team.
The top-scoring M-ette was Sydney Gibbs in third place with a score of +28. Brittney Sorlie came in 6th with a score of +35, Kyann Bergos came in 8th with a score of +42. In 10th, Kennedy Koss scored a +46, and Lavida Grotte-Dalby came in 12th with a +53 score.
“Due to weather, we have had a lot of range and swing practice,” said Webb. “Many of our returning golfers from last year showed so much growth from last years’ Shelby tournament to this one, and our freshmen did so well and gained lots of experience.”
The Mustangs didn’t fair too badly themselves, tied for third place out of the six schools fielding full teams. Glasgow took first place with a +57, and Cut Bank took second, with a +78. Malta and Choteau tied for third with a +102 score. Fairfield got fifth with a +104, and Shelby took 6th with a +172. Conrad and Harlem had golfers in the mix as well.
Individually, Kaden Bishop led the Mustangs with a 5th place finish and a score of +13. Hunter Stolem was 13th with a +23, Connor Clausen was 19th with a +27, Kellen Murray came in 28th with a +39, and Kash Stiles was 31st with a +49.
“It was great to see the kids off to such a great start,” said Webb. “I’m excited to see where the season takes us, and we will continue to work hard and keep improving from here.”
The Malta JV squad is in Shelby on Monday, April 11, and the Varsity teams get going again on Monday, April 18, at the Great Falls Invitational.
