M-ettes return and welcome state performers
The Malta M-ettes track team has retained plenty of talent from 2021, including two or three state placers.
The team will be without Erica Smith who graduated last spring. Smith won the 2021 State B triple jump. The team will also be without jumper Laynee Ophus, who tragically passed away last week.
The team welcomes back Skylie Lefdahl, a senior that took fourth place in the State B discus event, and Tia Siewing, a junior that placed fifth in shot put.
"I am excited for Tia and Skylie because they have a lot of potential," M-ette Head Coach Kaitlyn Smith said.
As of now, Siewing is ranked fourth in the state for shot put. Lefdahl is ranked fifth in discus.
In the Glasgow Invitational last Friday, April 1, the team took sixth with 42 points. Class C's Plentywood won the meet with 96 points, Savage was second with 55 points, Scobey was third with 53, Glasgow was fourth with 51, and Whitewater was fifth with 43.
"I feel like we performed pretty well," Coach Smith said. "Some of them came out and had a good week. I think that a lot of the girls are hoping for more."
Coach Smith believes that the team got a lot of first meet jitters out of the way and that many struggled after dealing with a tough and emotional week.
The M-ettes were led by Siewing who took second place in shot put with a throw of 33-5.50. Siewing was eleventh in javelin with a personal best of 79-11.
Lefdahl took third place in discus with a throw of 93-1. She was thirteenth in shot put with a throw of 13. Lefdahl also posted a time of 34.19 in the 200.
Junior Kira Beck, who transferred from Glasgow last season, took third place in pole vault after clearing 8-6. Beck nearly placed at state last year in the event, taking seventh place.
Beck also competed in the State B long relay last year. She is currently ranked fourth in Class B.
Junior Madison Williamson was third in triple jump with a length of 30-3. Williamson was seventh in the 200 with a time of 31.36. Junior Allie Kunze was eighth in the 200 with a time of 31.38 and freshman Megan Morser was thirteenth with a time of 32.54.
The M-ette long relay took third place in Glasgow. The team, consisting of Beck, sophomores Gracie Honey, Addison Ulrich, and junior Allison Kunze was third with a time of 4:47.69.
Honey was fourth in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:40.61. She was also sixth in the 400 with a personal best of 1:09.63.
Ulrich was sixth in the 100 meter dash with a personal best of 13.97.
The M-ette short relay team consisting of Addy Anderson, Kunze, Honey, and Ulrich took fifth with a time of 56.45.
The team was short-handed due to injuries to Lauren Tuss and Madyson Bain. The team was also without Justine Lamb, Giona Lamb, and Deion Lefdahl who put plenty of points up for Malta last season.
