Malta man volunteered as donor to help a friend; but now he’s helping a stranger
Malta resident Derek Davis, 27, signed up for the bone marrow transplant registry several years ago hoping to beat the odds and save the life of his friend.
This morning he entered a hospital in Berkeley, Ca., hoping to save the life of a complete stranger.
After having received five injections over as many days to prepare him for the harvesting of his white blood cells, Davis was scheduled to undergo the six-hour procedure this morning at 8 a.m.
If all goes well, he will be back home in time for the Easter holiday with his family.

Bison problem’s frustrating
A prominent event in Montana right now is the overpopulation of buffalo at Yellowstone Park and the slaughtering of those infected with brucellosis.
An incurable disease that is carried in unborn and newborn calves or uterine fluids, the real danger is when brucellosis is passed on to humans, where it is then known as undulant fever.
Undulant fever has symptoms similar to the flu with high fever, chills, and body aches. It lives deep within the lymph glands of the chest.
Although the disease is incurable, antibiotics will help maintain a person’s health. But the fever could return with little or no notice.
