Malta Wrestling Club at Montana Open; Wright takes First!

For the second weekend in a row, more than 2,400 youth wrestlers took over the First Interstate Bank Arena at MetraPark in Billings, from Saturday, March 26, to Sunday, March 27.

The Malta Wrestling Club consisted of 19 wrestlers and the group took 53rd place overall with a score of 55 points. Teams flew from as far away as Pennsylvania to compete.

Gemma Wright led the charge for Malta, taking first place in the Girls 8 & Under 42 class. Though the division consisted of three wrestlers, Wright pinned both of her opponents, earning five points for Malta. She pinned Brooklyn Maxwell of the Cascade Badgers at 2:32 in the championship.

Some weight classes had over 32 wrestlers. This included Rio Oxarart's 8 & Under 62 class. Oxarart took third place, after competing in a total of nine matches. Oxarart won his third-place match 3-0 over Cael Purcell.

Calvin Squires, who won the 2021 6 & Under 61 Class , last year, took third place in the 8 & Under 70 class. He won the third-place match by pinning Wolfpack Wrestling Club's Garrett Anderson at :31. Squires would then face North Montana Wrestling Club's Brody Douglas for second place. Douglas won by 12-5 decision.

Lane Spencer took third place in the 12 and Under 90 class. He pinned Bridger Garrison of Mine Yard Dogs Wrestling Club at 2:32. He lost the second-place match by 5-1 decision to Finn Stalick of Sheridan Wrestling Club.
