After falling to Plentywood in the Eastern C Division Championship game last Saturday, March 5, in Sidney, the Lady Mavericks were able to withstand a challenge game from their rival Scobey Spartans 43-36 last Monday, March 7, in Wolf Point.
"I am very proud of my girls for coming back and grinding out a very tough physical win with a trip to state on the line," Coach Amber Erickson told the PCN. "I feel getting to state is sometimes the hardest part and now that we are there they can just relax, enjoy the experience and play their game. On to State!"
The win on Monday, gave North Country sole possession of the 2022 Eastern C Divison second place trophy and a berth at the 2022 State C Tournament in Great Falls. The Girls State C Tournament is scheduled to start on Thursday, March 10, and conclude on Saturday, March 12.
The Lady Mavericks will open the tournament against the Western C Champion Twin Bridges Lady Falcons at 12 noon on Thursday.
The Lady Falcons defeated the Manhattan Christian Lady Eagles in the Western C Championship on Saturday, February 26. The score was 45-41.
In their win over Scobey, the Mavericks were led by Paige Wasson who scored 20 points.
Teagan Erickson had seven points. Jaycee Erickson and Zandora Longtree both scored five points. Mattea McColly, Kendall Scheffelmear, Shelbi LaBrie, and Mattea McColly each scored two points.
The Mavericks went 2-2 at the Eastern C. they defeated Froid-Lake 62-22 in the opening round of the tournament. They then defeated the Mon-Dak Thunder 58-13 in the semifinal round on Friday, March 4. North Country fell to Plentywood 48-39 in the Eastern C title game on Saturday, setting them up for a matchup with Scobey, who North Country defeated for the 3C title on Saturday, February 19.
The Mavericks struggled to score early in their challenge game against Scobey, scoring eight points, while Scobey scored 11. The game was tied prior to a buzzer-beating trey by Scobey.
The Mavericks and Spartans each scored eight points in the second quarter. Scobey had a 19-16 lead going into halftime.
The Mavericks forced a few turnovers late in the third quarter, giving them a seven-point run in the third. They were up 34-26 at the end of the third, outsourcing Scobey 15-10 in the period. The Lady Mavericks scored nine points in the fourth quarter and gave up 10.
Jaycee Erickson led the Lady Mavericks in their championship game loss to Plentywood with 16 points, two rebounds, and two assists. T. Erickson had 11 points, six rebounds, and three blocks. Wasson had nine points, six rebounds, and two steals.
In their semifinal win over MonDak, the Lady Mavericks were led by Wasson, who had 16 points, five rebounds, and four steals. J. Erickson had 13 points, four assists, three rebounds, and two steals. T. Erickson had 10 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and three steals.
In North Country's first-round win over Froid-Lake, the Lady Mavericks were led by Paige Wasson, who had 28 points, 11 rebounds, and three assists. Jaycee Erickson had 11 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Teagan Erickson had nine points, seven rebounds, three steals, and two assists.
